Cup holder or no cup holder in rail? (2 Viewers)

I bought 4 black TV trays drilled 2 holes for each so that the jumbo cup holders could fit. Works like a charm. Eventually I'd like to have some nice custom wheeled drink carts but that's on a future list...[emoji41]

Nice :) pics or suggestion on placement? I was thinking two on the skinny end so it's easier to fit between players

I personally do not like cup holders in the rail. TV Trays or side tables.

How about on your head?

You know, there's a different option that I've never seen done... on a poker table.

I remember seeing a company doing cool wooden gaming furniture, albeit meant for table gaming, not poker, called GeekChic. Their tables have a rail system which is a groove around the outside into which an EXTERNAL cup holder can be hung. It's kinda like a slide-under, but it goes on the outside. I suppose it's possible to come up with a way to do that, if custom building...

Here's what they offer:

I recall there being a spring-loaded mechanism that locks it into the rail; you press a button underneath to release it and pull it out, and you can slide it to any convenient spot along the groove you see.

They get pretty crazy, though:

Several threads on CT regarding different ways of implementing slide-out or swing-out drink holders on poker tables. Even some that swing-out from under the chairs.....

That's pretty cool. I like the idea of a spring loaded pop out from under the rail.

Here's how I did mine so they could sit between players more easily:

Hey Sean; you know I make drink carts right? ;)

A sneak peek making sure the pieces fit.

I am thinking of using this for the diffuser.

Early in this thread there was so much contempt for cups in the rail that I briefly started to rethink my design... but then things evened up again. I'm designing my second table - my first was a racetrack table with cups in the track. Cups in the track is probably more annoying than in the rail but I still haven't found it to be too much of an issue. For some reason if the racetrack wasn't there and I had cups in the felt in the same spots I'd think it was ridiculous... somehow the racetrack makes it okay. They're regular cupholders too - I don't understand the love for jumbos. Regular cups hold cans so snug that it's impossible to spill them. Jumbos are asking for trouble I reckon.

Some of those sidetables look pretty slick but I think that I drink too much to be doing a hip swivel every time I want a drink... geez that's almost exercise! And imagine the reps!

Cups in the rail it is.

I struggled with this on my recent table build as well. I polled all my players and they wanted drink holders in the rail. After I put them in I was glad I did. It seems to me that the slide under would still be easy to knock over but I have never used them so I can't say for sure. Side tables sound nice but the space they take up would be an issue. This was my first build.

Well done, table looks great!

I still haven't put the foam on my rail yet... I think I may have made my rail a bit too thin at 4.5 inches to fit the cup holders I want to use.

I may make some wood rings to see how they will fit. Almost everthing is ready. I just need to stain and upholster.

I ordered a custom cloth from t-chan. I hope that I can get through
his print queue to get my scheduled home game going with the new table by next week.

Nice build. Thx for the input and sharing.

Haha. I wonder if there are less spills with rail vs. side table. The distance from cup holder to face is much shorter and less room for error on rail cup holders... although when a spill does happen it does put the table itself more at risk.

Regular sized are great for cans and bottles, but things like rocks glasses don't fit.

I have had good success with the 2 different sized cup holders in 1. Holds bottles and cans well for smaller diameter on bottom then a wider diameter about an inch up hold wine classes and high ball glasses.

Yeah I thought this would be the main reason... fortunately my game isn't that sophisticated. I've got glasses that fit and those plastic beer cups fit in too but there aren't too many top shelf sippers amongst my crew.

I've had 3 tables the last 10 years. One oval with cup holders, one oval without cupholders, one octagon with cupholders.

I love Cupholders. Everyone has a drink, side tables get in the way, drinks are put on the table if no cupholder and they spill. Cupholders are way better and like Butler said, they are built into the casino tables I play with on the East coast.

All the table ive built had a racetrack and cup holders. The three regular games I play at have racetrack with cupholders in them. I honestly can't say that anyone has really complained about them being in the way. There's no doubt that sometimes the table design calls for no cup holded or racetracks but I'm really ambivalent on the issue.
I also love the side tables but you need to have the room to use them and store them.
