Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (52 Viewers)

Do you feel that way about all oversized inlay RHCs or do you think it’s unique to them? I’ve never handled them but have no problem with my Bahamias.
I think it depends on how used the chips are. I had sets of PNYs and Bahamias that were near mint. And I have a huge set of CPs. The CPs that I have that are near mint are the same imo as the PNYs and Bahamias in terms of slipperiness. The more used ones are a bit more slippery, but I wouldn’t call them a problem. To each their own, I guess.

Also you should consider the Hall of fame an insight into chipping history and evolution. Trends come and go in hobbies, and options were also more limited 10 years ago. For example for CPC: Edgespots, molds and colors have all been expanding over time, so one could argue that it is easier to make a great set now than way back when even sticking to CPC.
This. Sure, there are probably some sets that found their way in due to votes from friends and not due to the set itself, but for the most part I believe it’s just the evolution timeline.

As someone who stumbled on this site recently, and have been addicted ever since, finding just about everything entertaining and chock full of great info...
The Hall of Fame is kind of a wet fart. Yes, some cool sets (love Jeep's work like everyone else), but damn if there isn't a lot of boring, even pedestrian stuff.

No ban hammer, please!

Yeah I’ve not worked out how HOF is judged yet.

Maybe I’m uncouth with my love of fantasy cali Tiger’s lol

If you're only looking at the sets in the HOF resource, you're missing out on much of what's meant to be fun about the HOF. Below are links to all the past voting threads, which have write-ups and photos for all the sets that were nominated each year (not just the winners). These threads also have information on the HOF purpose & process and how sets get nominated for voting. And I'll paste what is IMHO the most important piece of that intro here: "The entire HOF process is solely intended to celebrate and augment the enjoyment of our hobby." It's meant to be a fun thing, that's it. No cash prizes, no secret club membership with benefits, just a bit of fun.

@Irish thanks for posting this here, I haven’t seen many of these sets before (and unfortunately looks like a lot of the older picture links are broken). It’s fun to see how sets have evolved over time and certain themes played off of each other. Has there ever been any consideration to retroactively induct sets into the HOF? I see some gorgeous sets in these lists that I’m surprised didn’t make it (Aurora Club for example). Given how sets and tastes have evolved it may be worth revisiting some of these.

Also, it would be great if more of these were in the chip database or other central location to easily fined.

Inlay design is more important than chip colors/spots…

As someone who loves history, this I could get into. I could see how the HOF would benefit from a forum historian or curator - someone who could create a meta overlay that weaves the history, social stories, industry trends and the like over the top, and explains what things actually meant for the uninitiated like me.

  • "User RunningMan's 1996 induction despite a boring and confusing set design was actually a reflection of his triumph; a social struggle for dominance in the PCF bulletin board between RunningMan and AllisonsChains led to the two dueling for influence across three international chippers meetups that year, including one in Uzbekistan, where RunningMan paid locals performing a ritual dance during the group dinner to shred jerseys of AllisonsChains' home football team, which was a centerpiece of his objectively superior chip design that year. RunningMan won in a landslide despite having only two chip colors across five chips, proving his international lobbying skills."
  • "FrederickX's design would be considered forlorn today, but in 1988, it was the latest trend, having been first designed by ClayCrazy Co. for Hurrah's, quietly stolen by Peterson in 1989, and evolved into what would become an industry standard by TiredOldPresses Incorporated in 1990. It was truly groundbreaking for a private chipper to have gotten his hands on a set even before this trend showed up in most major casinos, leading to his easy induction in the HOF that year."

Ehhh. I'd say they are both as important. One can ruin the other pretty fast. But people undervalue the inlay design, I'd agree.
This set brought the idea to my mind. Pretty unremarkable colors and spot progression according to PCF standards but based on the inlays alone I’d probably take this set over a lot of other sets. Credit to @Santa123

At one time that 312 was the only edge spots available at ASM before it became CPC

The embodiment of chipping in general. HoF and @JMC9389 's annual "best xyz" threads are just another avenue for us to share pron, have some enjoyment, or have something to bitch about, since the latter is how some people seem to derive their enjoyment from the hobby  . It's nice/appreciated that people even take the time to run this stuff.

Has there ever been any consideration to retroactively induct sets into the HOF?
There are legacy sets up for vote every year, I believe.

....and/or stamp design. Anyone that has seen (or especially felt the quality of) Kifer-stamping over the past year or so knows.

Not a direct induction into the HOF, but as @Rieguy noted, recent HOF committees have often included a legacy set (ie, a set outside the current eligibility window) to include in the voting for the HOF.

Wanted and Trade ads were nearly useless before, but now that they are removed from the general Classifieds, they are completely useless. If the problem is too much spam, then limit the bumps to weekly vs. daily.

Make the Classifieds Great Again! (add auctions back too while we're at it :ninja:)

Didn’t even know that…

Agree. They r completely useless now.

The line starts after:

Search by date instead of “relevance”.
Searching not including direct messages.

If we’re splitting off Wanteds and Trades, why not split by TRK, Paulson, and Other?
That might be a possibility, although his new For Sale thread he is working on, looks like it can have selected descriptors in the header that can be selected to filter. Either way or both are an interesting option.

I can see the auctions. Not sure splitting the wanted/trade into their own categories makes a huge difference. If someone is looking to trade, why would they not just want to look at trade items all together as opposed to having to do an extra step of filtering out the others. Same for wanted ads. Does not seem that big a deal. They all still show up in the general messages, which is where most people will see them anyway.
