Considering disconnecting from Mobile Device(s) (1 Viewer)

Yeah, not a bad idea. Except some vendors won't accept those Google number and - I'm not sure how they know.

As for that app, do you have to program the numbers individually? The reason I ask is because all these crap calls come from different numbers everyday. They're never the same number twice.

I believe Google has to isolate those numbers for their own use. So somewhere, there is a database of numbers owned/managed by Google. They probably compare against those numbers.

As for the app, that's the beauty of it... they have their own database... I'll get a call from a number I don't recognize... It rings as normal, but then the app puts on overlay that gives me the number as attributed in their database and also warns me of a suspected scammer/spammer/solicitor. I can accept the call or ignore it. I can review what others have reported about that number, and I can leave my own report ("left voicemail soliciting __ sales"). Their database is not always correct. For example, my father-in-law's On-Star number was apparently previously owned by Laquisha in Detroit... I can tolerate the few mistakes to avoid the hassle of a solitcitor getting me on the phone. And once they are blacklisted, I never see their call come in again.

When you can't escape it, overwhelm it. I try to take every opportunity to put total crap in the system. It's amazing how far back some sites will let you put your birth year.

So, let me get this straight... You are going to try to reduce your online presence, and your income comes from buying up domain names?

So, let me get this straight... You are going to try to reduce your online presence, and you announce your intentions online?

So, let me get this straight... You buy domain names, probably because the previous holder did not re-register the name, and you sell it back to them for a profit, which is very opportunist, but you don't like it when telemarketers call you because they're being opportunist?

On a separate note, when I attended S@P II, I could not remember where @Mr Tree 's house was. I pulled up google, and tracked my location from the previous year, and boom, we had the address again.

Sometimes being tracked is a good thing. Because truth be told, the only person who really gives a flip about where I am, is me.

Congratulations on the dumbest post of the year.

1. Get a Google Voice number and give that out when you have to register domains, etc. You can set up Google Voice to ring through or to just go to voicemail. Easy to ignore solicitors.

2. Use this app (or one of many like it). Identify (and blacklist) potential solicitors.

That looks like a good app except they require access to contacts and supposedly encrypt them and don't sell them to 3rd parties.....and trump isn't colluding with Russia....

I can also add that my wife gets "ads" for eBay.com>poker chips on her Facebook - but we have different computers. We can't figure out why exactly those ads would be on display for her.

Hmmm...are you both using Chrome and logged into the same Google account?

Only thing I can figure is that the ads are being delivered based on IP address.
Actually, they're on her cell phone too. So, it's really strange. But you might be right. Maybe since she uses wi-fi (from her phone) at home, the ad displays based on IP. Never thought of that...

Yeah, with Hiya, the permissions are expansive. It does get an Editor's Choice rating, if that matters. But there are other similar apps that don't have the same permissions.

Well it seems the wife doesn't want me to be untethered. So, obviously I'm going to have to go about this a little differently. I changed my cell phone number, purchased a supplemental (virtual) number and immediately registered both on the no-call list with the State Attorney General and Federal Trade Commission. This will surely help reduce the number of non-sense calls I receive on a daily basis.

You forgot the . All 3 of our cells are registered on the federal Do Not Call list, and all 3 get robo calls (which are already illegal without giving the caller written permission to robo-call), frequently from spoofed numbers, thus preventing attempts to block particular numbers.

Perhaps you have a State Atty. that can do something, but the FTC is powerless to help.

You could also complain to your State Representative. Mine (in Illinois) actually asked for feedback on this from his constituents.

Meh . . . my phone is just that, a phone. Talk, text, camera, but no data. I have my laptop for that. I used to be concerned about how much of "me" is out there for the world to exploit. But then I thought, the heck with it, you cannot have zero footprint, and there is no such thing as a "little preggers", so who cares what's out there that people can dig up. those photos of me with Salma Hayek? TOTALLY not photo-shopped, I swear. Those that one of me and the goat DEFINITELY is . . .

You can actually browse privately on mobile devices so websites can't track your search history. Your ISP still can though. Or you can use VPN apps that will hide all your internet activity from your ISP as well.

The thing is I get about 5-6 calls/day. Typically 4-5 of those are out-of-area numbers with either a salesman or automated message......

If your number is not in my phone book, my phone does not even ring. It goes directly to voice mail.

I use Ghostery for all browsing. It's fantastic for this and tells me which sites are attempting to track my browsing history; whilst blocking them from doing so.

It's cute that you think that it's that easy. If your on-line, someone somewhere can find out what you're doing. It is just a question of time and effort. There are NO secrets.

You mean someone already knew about my midget porn habit?
