If I were laying out the cash for customs (yeah, if...), I'd be going through CPC or BRPro. Those seem like the strongest options depending on chip type.

However, the reason I mention other options is that I've seen amazing custom sets on chips like China Clays - so if you like those, aim in that direction.

Case in point, I absolutely adore the set above from @espehrson. However, I know that many folks wouldn't dig them.

Or this set by the late CRAW:

Long story short, unless you HAVE to have Paulsons or casino chips, don't feel too boxed in. I'll get off my soap box now. :)

There was a time when you built a set purely on what was available at the time, making do with whatever casino or spot patterns happened to be around.
Now it’s like placing an order in a catalog. Good luck

I'm new to chipping as well but the most important thing I've learned is samples samples samples.

I also concur with many of the other posts that a custom set of CPC chips will be an excellent investment something you'll have forever.
Yes, a custom CPC set is something you'll have forever but it takes a while to really know what you like and to get the design nailed down. Took me 4 years before I really knew what I wanted. I could have made some dumb sets in the interim, thinking they were cool.

I just want to add CPCs can be a great purchase for use but usually a bad investment. In that custom CPC sets always sell for a loss if at all. They’re so customized unless you’ve made an absolute banger that everyone wants the next guy can just order their own custom set direct from CPC.

Thank you for the clarification. I agree. This is an investment in your quality of (poker) life; this is not a fiscal investment.

I like that breakdown. My co-conspirator and neighbor ordered our first denominated cash set and we’re a little heavy on 5’s.

It just reminds me to really think it through. I labored for days in my group but order.

Thanks for the input

Think it through for sure! A tough decision for me on my last set was choosing to have a 3rd denomination and color in play all the time vs. having a ton of $1 workhorse chips in play and rarely seeing $5s. I limited the $1 chips to ensure $5s would be in play.

And go CPC. If you are gonna do it, do it right. Putting labels over existing chips... it's just not the same.

I agree with this 100%, but you still gotta figure this out for yourself. Maybe you think the feel of paulsons are so good you can live with a murdered chip with labels...

And, in reality, money is part of the equation.

Is there a place where I could buy a thorough sample set of every main type of chip? I'm going to Vegas in a few weeks, maybe the gamblers general store?

@Spinettis Gaming will be able to sort you out with most of the different types of chips on offer. They might not necessarily be 'sample sets', so to speak, rather shuffle stacks of Paulson THC, THC, ceramic etc.

If you like “weighty” chips- look at a custom Matsui set. They also have 39 and 43mm chips. You can get them with a brass insert which adds heft. Matsuis are found in casinos- I’m a fan of the 43mm chips.

The Europe site has a lot of info including a chip designer and a brochure: https://matsuieurope.com/brochure/

The American site if what you would want to order from. Very helpful people.

There are artwork fees and some other things to consider, but the cost per chip was cheaper than CPC when I last looked.

This will get a lot of pushback from the clay purists, especially hitting on the “slippery” feel (which has been solved in another thread and doesn’t seem to impact the 43mm).

You can order some 39 and 43mm Raddison Aruba chips here as a kind of sample:

Wow, thank you guys. I had no idea Matsui had so many custom design options. I'll go check out Spinetti's, and if no dice, I'll probably order some of those Radisson ones. Cheers

Update: The Monte Carlo claysmiths will soon find a new home in the poker chest to be dragged around town by our son when he is home for the summer from school and sent back down to college in the fall.

I have fallen for a somewhat under appreciated chip, the China Clay 8v Greek Key mold.

After scoring 8 racks of purple chips I recently bought a monster lot on the classifieds. I have one more small purchase to make for quantity and will begin assembling sets starting with my Godfather themed cash set.

For CC 8v Greek pron here is a rack bathed and oiled. Can you tell which one is which?

More pics to come.
