I think players would get a kick out of this, so I started doing some tests. Thoughts?

I also picked up some new chips for a tourney set, denoms 25 to 1000, with enough for 25 x T5000 starting stacks. I was planning to get some 5000 plaques to top it off, but I'm considering making prop bundles of $50 bills, which are $5000 each, instead.

FYI: this is standard paper, cut down at the local print shop, with the edges stained with coffee. It's still drying. The top and bottom of the stack are one-sided printouts (two-sided is illegal.) The currency bands were free from the local bank, but I'll have to get $5000 bands online.

I've always wanted bundles like that, for use in tournaments. (Well, ever since I first saw them on Poker After Dark.) I could never decide if I wanted bundles of $100 bills or $20s though. (Or $1s, for a cash game kind of thing.)

Only if you put 100 in a bundle :) I think a bundle of fifty bills (or more likely, fifty bill-sized pieces of paper) would still have a satisfying heft?

I'm using real currency bands... if the stack isn't thick enough, the denominations printed don't show up on the edges (the test stack above is too thin; the back edge in the photo is blank and the denoms are on the bottom.

I was also thinking about half-stacks of hundreds, but it's also appealing to have a 50 be the face of the $5,000 stack, the $20 be the $2,000 stack... consistent digits between the bill and the band, easy math, matching the standards...

The bands are nothing special, of course, so you can print your own - but I do like the easy-to-reuse adhesive on them while I'm testing ideas. I haven't ordered bands for the $5000. Maybe I'll print my own, so that my hundos and T$5000 are in the same style - but then again, they're not going to ever be used together, one is for cash, the other for tourney...

Good points all around. I can tell you have given this some thought!

I've always felt cash bricks felt... cheap, somehow. Chips have heft. Chips have sound. Chips are little works of art, and plaques even larger works of art. Chips ay "Hello, I've been expecting you to make it to this level". Chips have entire forums dedicated to discussions about what makes the best chips.

Bricks of (pseudo)money? They have the potential for a papercut.

Chips win.

:D

It's either bundles or plaques for the top spot in the tourney set, for me. :)

It would make strange for a tournament...

Well, I would make them with euros if I were in France, of course! But my chips are dollar-denominated.

I think he means that the strange part is that they're dollars in a tournament. Tournament sets typically have no currency symbol. Your 1, 5, and 25 could represent dollars, pounds, euros, or bags of rice; though almost every time they only represent points. If your tournaments are winner-take-all, and the buy-in exactly equals the starting stacks (ala James Bond/Casino Royale), then you are good (though I'd still prefer chips or plaques), otherwise it just doesn't make sense.

I was making a joke - and, in fact, it's being considered for a Casino Royale tourney set. If I go plaque, I still need to make it custom, as I don't see many 5000`s to choose from.
