I'm a newbie to the forum and looking for a chip set. The Claysmith Showdowns caught my eye. Any critiques would be welcome!

1. Determine a budget first and foremost.

2. Don't let people on here talk you above that budget.

3. Getting Showdown chips or equivalent is not a mark of shame. But realize they have very little resale value if that matters to you.

4. Don't fall into the trap of needing "the best." There is no such thing.

I'm looking for a set that I can use without worry or guilt about depreciation. I have a 1000 chip set of Paulson's Casino De Mexico that I bought new back in the 90's. Don't want to use them because it looks like they aren't made anymore. Thinking I'd like to spend in the range of $200-400 for everyday chips.

But if you 1) are willing to break your budget, then maybe 2) I can talk you into 3) avoiding the shame of showdowns and 4) getting the absolute best!

Just kidding :D Take it from a Milano owner: Budget chips work great! And if you ever sell them, at least you'll be doing a new member a favour and helping them get cheap chips

Cash, tournament, both?
how many players ?

on the $200 - $400 range you'll have plenty of options from Casino used Paulsons, to china clay, some ceramics and hybrids.
(limited to 400 to 800 chip set)

Do not forget to check some of @Hobbyphilic YouTube videos.

Those Paulson's you have are sweet. And as others have said, pics please!!
And please please put them into play. That is why they exist. They do nobody any good sitting on a shelf. But I totally understand.

You will probably get a bunch of PMs from people trying to buy them from you. Be warned. ;)

As for a budget set, I'd consider china clays, either Majestics or Royals. Both run under $0.50/chip but are hands above Claysmiths.

IMO, Royals are much better than other china clays, due to colors, edgepots, and not being slippery.

The other CC’s (Majestics, Dunes, and Pharaohs) are sort of lateral move from some sluggers. They have the advantage in colors, spots, and weight, but certain sluggers are actually less slippery and stack better for about 1/3 the price.

Among sluggers, the Showdowns look pretty nice on the internet, but in person, the colors are dark and drab, and the rolling edges are rough due to flashing.

I prefer the Monaco Casino chips I got from discountpokershop.com. The plastic has a softer feel, and the edges are smooth. I’ve also heard good things about the Outlaw and Crown Casino sets from there.

Definitely get samples.

But more importantly, put those Paulsons into play! :)

If you can’t bring yourself to use your nice chips, sell them to somebody who will! ;). (Seriously though, do they give you pleasure sitting on a shelf?)

For clay smith chips: make sure to buy all you will ever need at once, because you will never find a color match later. Ask me how I know.

As promised....

Majestics or Royals seem to be your best bet for your price range although I can’t speak from personal experience yet (samples coming tomorrow). Ceramic Ravenor Classics might be a good option as well.

Welcome to the forum & those chips are AMAZING!

Various used China Clay sets (Milano, Dunes, etc.) sell in your price range via the classified section of this forum.

I've used them about 12 times in the last 20 years. Guess I've thought of them like other collectables, where you look and don't touch. After reading all the posts about it being a shame they're not used, I now feel bad. Lol.
Dont worry lol it happens. My secondary PCA cash set has seen felt once since I've owned it lol

Why the HELL would you want to play with Claysmith stuff when you've got a set like THESE! That's about $3000 current market value right there!

Man, it's like having a convertible electric Porsche in the garage yet scouring the local ads for a 1983 Nissan Micra because you want to get back into the excitement of driving.

PLAY WITH THESE!

If you don't like the denominations, then design some custom labels and do an inlay replacement job.

Get samples.... I got the Showdown samples and personally decided to go another way.

Said it in the other thread, but if $.50/chip is your budget I would put used ceramics on a level above China clay.
