Edit: It won't let me edit the title but we are now kicking around the idea of doing this in October.

I want to get this event on the radar. Many details are to be worked out and will follow. This will be an invite only event as seats will be limited.

This event will start off with sporting clays at the range down the street and then we will head back to my place for dinner and poker. Poker will likely be limited to about 16 people, game rotation is TBD but the max buy in will likely be $100 (.25/.50). Dinner will probably be pizza unless I can convince my wife to do something. I checked with the range to make sure May 30th worked. I have not been able to confirm if they have shotguns you can rent though. I know a few other have mentioned they may have a loaner.

Those who are tagged please let me know what you are interested in (all, clays, dinner, poker, none).

Locals not on the site are getting invites as well. Fran already said he was in. I'm sure I am missing a few people. I always do. No offense if I have missed you.

I'm IN!! This a great idea Sprouty!! I can't wait for it.

BTW - I have an extra shotgun if needed.

I fully intend to be in for everything. I’ve got an old 20 ga. Winchester pump and an old Fox 12 ga. double barrel that all are welcome to use. I hope to bring at least one of our boys along to shoot. Obviously super convenient location for me. Also almost forgot I’ve got an old Ted Williams 12 ga. pump. I think pump shotguns are less desirable for sporting clays though correct?

I've seen people do it but in general over/unders and autos are what I see people using.

I don't even know what I am gonna use yet. I think I only have single shots left in my shotgun collection.

In for everything. However if Jake and Colleen leave that weekend I won't be able to stay too late

@Sprouty, please put me down as a tentative for all.

I plan on buying a pump shotgun for the home very soon ... probably not great for clays, but it’ll have to do. I think it’ll be funny if we all go out there with our pump action guns.

You can crash at my place if you want.

@Sprouty I would be in for dinner and poker, probably out for the shooting. If you end up full with people who are in for all, no worries. Let me know either way!

In for all.

I have a Remmy 870 pump.

What kinda pants is everyone wearing?

I know you mentioned extra shooters at one point, once you get a count let me know and I'll add it by your name.

Please let me know if you find out you can't make it. I am adding you for everything for the time being (you better make it).

I have thought about trying to use my single shot but I don't think I'll be fast enough on the reload for the second shot.

You are in either way!

So from what I understand, minimum barrel length for the sporting clays is 28" but I am pretty sure the last few times I shot I got away with using a 26" barrel.

Just putting that out there so everyone knows.

Home defense shotgun to clay shotgun complete.

I was looking at several hundred for a new O/U, up to $1000 or more for a new semi. Instead, I bought a 28" vented rib barrel. The Remmy model was $200, but I took a chance on this aftermarket barrel from Target Sports, $80. Came with three chokes and a choke wrench.

Changeover was a breeze and fit seems excellent. As long as it doesn't blow up when I fire it, we're good.

One minor issue is the bead sight, which sits much lower than the existing ghost ring sight.

You can still find the bead, but because the rear ghost ring sits so high on the Picatinny rail, I'm sure sight alignment is off.

Worst case scenario, I can pull the rail off by removing four screws, but a shotgun is not really a pinpoint accuracy weapon (it's for pointing, not aiming), so I'm gonna run it this way next time I'm making a run for toilet paper at the range and see if I like it.

So it looks like the cost will be $25 per shooter for 50 sporting clays. Website says rentals are $20 (I still need to verify availability). Shell prices below. I plan on bringing a few extra just in case. Please read the below rules copied from the website for ammo restrictions.

Rules/limitations per web site...

  • Ear and eye protection are required, both for shooters and spectators.
  • The action on your gun must be able to be seen visibly open at all times while not shooting.
  • Your gun should never be loaded unless you are in the shooting position, and it is your turn to shoot.
  • The gun’s muzzle should always be pointed down-range while loading.
  • You must point your muzzle in a safe direction while carrying it, preferably up to the sky.
  • In no circumstance shall more than two shells be loaded into your gun at any given time.
  • All shotgun ammunition must be between 7 1/2 and 9 shot size, with the drams of powder not exceeding 3 1/4. Steel shot can also be used, if shot size is 7 or smaller (larger in shot number). This means that you cannot shoot buck shot or game loads (such as 6 shot) at clay targets. If you are caught on the range shooting improper ammunition, it will be confiscated and further actions may be taken by MSC management.
  • Shotguns with barrel length less than 26 inches are not allowed on the clay target ranges at Island Lake Shooting Range. The only exception to this rule is youth model shotguns. All barrel lengths are permitted at our Bald Mountain location.
  • Do not attempt to fix any machines, call the club house, or notify an employee only.
We are shooting at the Island Lake Range. Look like it says 26" barrel.

Also, I know we are in crazy times right now. If this event has to be pushed out I am thinking about October maybe.

$8/box is silly. Cases (10 boxes) at Dunham's are $75 and can be found on sale for $50.

If we are looking at 2 boxes per person (50 clays) I wouldn't mind group buying a case at Dunham's or elsewhere. Lemme know if you're interested and I'll start keeping an eye out for price drops.

Great idea Wedge, however I'm all set with shells for now. And I do have an extra gun if someone wants/needs to borrow it.

This damn corona thing had better be gone my the end of May!!
