Not Mine Chips in WA for $20 (1 Viewer)

It could be as simple as googling "what are clay poker chips worth", which led me to https://www.quora.com/What-are-Poker-chips-worth.

"Chips cost about 35 cents to 65 cents each depending on the material (clay is the basis for most casino chips), quality, printing, etc. Chips from closed casinos can be collectors items - the Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collectors Club can tell you all about the collectors and the collections - some rare chips from the old Las Vegas casinos can fetch FIVE FIGURES ($20-30,000)! This rare (only one of 4) chip from the Sands might be worth $50-60,000!"

Hyperbole aside, one could read the .35 - .65 range, see the emails/texts rolling in, and reasonably come up with .50 per chip.

Clearly we need to start seeding the interwebs with false information.

I know of a couple members who will email sellers like this out of a perceived sense of Good Samaritan-ship. That’s all I’m going to say about that right here.

Oh. Well, there ya go.

So... your argument is that this forum (eBay/craigslist links) shouldn't exist.. because you may lose a few bargains. The people who read this forum and pick up a tip, on the other hand, gain a bargain (like I did). In my case I wasn't local, and had to negotiate with a completely unknown seller to make the shipment happen etc. It all worked out, but it still took work and I took the risks sending cash to a stranger etc.

In this particular case someone must have tipped the seller off, and the price went up. I wouldn't say that's the norm, though. This forum serves a useful purpose imho.

It's not about me, it's about the people who put in the time and work to find deals. A set of legit chips comes up on a very rare occasion. People hunt for hours digging through thousands of what we on this site consider garbage chip listings to find even a decent set of chips. A great set happens once every 5 years or so.

To someone who snagged a tip, it required literally no work at all, it was just there on a forum they were going to be at anyway.

I think the eBay forum serves a purpose in generating a small bit of revenue for the administrator (Tommy) but that's about it.

I understand that we are shooting ourselves in the foot in some cases, but the effort that many of us put into searching for these deals does benefit the community. I only publicly post about half of the deals I find, the others via PM to specific local PCF folks who I know would appreciate the heads up.

Below is an example of a deal where you benefitted directly from the tip, and there are plenty others where PCF members were tipped off about a Craigslist deal and wouldn't have found cheap chips otherwise.

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/450-notched-lucky-eagle-casino-chips-for-15-in-wa.22354/

Of course there are examples where we fuck things up for ourselves, but there are countless more where grateful people got some benefit.

You didn't have to search for an example where I benefited from a tip, I openly admitted that I made a play at the chips in this thread. If someone leaves $100 bill on the ground, I am going to pick it up.

I was and am still grateful to you @MegaTon44 for the tip linked above. It was well outside of my search radius, and normally I wouldn't consider a drive like that for cancelled chips, except that it had what looked like a $500 chip I hadn't seen before, which made it worth it to me.

What I didn't say in the thread because I didn't feel like crapping it up, was that the seller said she received "around a dozen" contacts from all over the country offering her several hundred dollars to ship the chips, after we had arranged to meet. Where could these offers have come from? It seems obvious to me that members of this community were trying to sabotage the deal you hooked me up with. I was pissed when she told me this, but decided to not bring it up for a couple reasons. First because we don't need those negative vibes here, this is seriously my happy place. And second, I didn't want to let people know that others were doing it, because it might give them the idea that if others were doing it, they could too.I think the only reason I ended up with the chips is because the seller was skeptical of electronic payments. If the seller had more experience with online transactions, the Lucky Eagles would have been another example where we fucked ourselves.

Make no mistake, the intent to screw me by other members of this site was 100% there.

... but there are countless more where grateful people got some benefit.

Do you think no one on this site would have found those chips if you didn't post them? Again, don't get me wrong, selfishly I am glad you did, but in this case I benefited from work I didn't do... possibly, at the cost of a member closer to the seller than I that would have come across the ad.

Sorry man, but I disagree with this completely. You posted in another thread on PCF earlier today how happy you are that the Yakama sale happened earlier this year. That sale was also a link posted to this very forum, and that's how most folks became aware of it. By your reasoning the member who posted about the Yakamas should have kept it to themselves, or just bought all of the chips, and the people who found out about it through PCF didn't deserve those chips because they didn't "work" for it.

This forum is actually one of the ways in which PCFers lend a hand to help each other out. It is forums like this that are the reason folks are on PCF in the first place. Sorry that you missed out on this particular sale, but don't talk about shutting down something that's good for everyone just because it didn't benefit you in this case.

Long story short: Send me your Yakamas if you feel you don't deserve them ;)

Well maybe I can just say this: in the case of Washington state, we obviously have more than a few craigslist-happy locals. There is no need to post about Washington state craigslist sales. We'll find them. As was the case for these moose chips (pun intended). The extra attention will never unearth something we don't already know about, it will just serve to drive up the price.

Just my opinion only. People of course are free to do whatever they want.

Ok so I guess that I am the sabatour/expert.......

I messaged this guy a couple hours ago and asked to see a picture of the chips......... he messaged me back and said........ sorry man I am pulling down the post...... there has just been way too many messages about these chips and I'm going to do some research on them......

I said well let me see a picture maybe I can help....... he sent me the picture and I told him that they were asm clay chips, square in circle mold etc....... he asked me what I thought they were worth and I told him they could be worth around .50 cents each if he sold them on eBay....... probably less on craigslist...........

So sorry guys, but I wouldn't have said anything if he wasn't already pulling the post to research the chips........ but I figured he would find out anyway once he looked into it.............

I also told him that that price was high and that they were probably worth less based on the condition..... he said thanks and listed them for 600........

Oh and i actually messaged him before i saw this thread....... i search online all the time........... but I figured with him pulling the post that he had already figured out that something was up.......no point in bullshitting him at that point

It will also serve to give a PCFer (who may not be you) the chance to buy some chips.

What you searchers need to do is maintain a network amongst yourselves - a list of a guy or two in each state who's willing to hustle for chips. Message them privately, they score the deal, bada bing bada boom.

It's true, I hadn't seen that auction before I saw that thread. However, there is absolutely zero chance I would not have come across those auctions on my own, liklely that same day.

By your reasoning the member who posted about the Yakamas should have kept it to themselves...

Yup, I may have got more hundreds, that I don't need, but want, and felt fine about it.

This forum is actually one of the ways in which PCFers lend a hand to help each other out.

It's also the one (other than the political threads) that pits member against member the most.

It is forums like this that are the reason folks are on PCF in the first place.

I have no idea what this means.

Sorry that you missed out on this particular sale, but don't talk about shutting down something that's good for everyone just because it didn't benefit you in this case.

See, you don't get it. I didn't miss out. I was part of the reason some local chipper and possible member of PCF missed out.

Also, I'm not talking about shutting anything down, I am presenting my views on the subject. By all means if you want to post ads, do it.

When you get this cabal, this cosa nostra, this thing of yours, established, will the rest of us have to pay you a tribute? How will membership be allotted - "reputable members" only?

But that's already the case.

I tried to explain it somewhere above, but I'll say it again.

Case in point:
1. I do not live in California.
2. I picked up a tip in this subforum.
3. I contacted the seller and bought a sweet set of chips at a great price.

According to your argument, that shouldn't have happened. You're saying the member who posted the tip in my case should have stayed quiet, and that his/her post was bad for PCF.

I'm sorry but I can't see how helping someone on PCF score chips is in any way a bad thing. I would never have those chips otherwise. If they had come to market afterwards the price would have been out of my range. Moreover, I have since returned that favor by helping other members score chips at good prices.

So, at the end of the day, you're against other people sharing information for free, because sometimes it costs you scoring bargains on chips. You're also trying to encourage other members not to share information with the rest of the community. All this, despite the fact that you personally benefitted from such sharing multiple times in the past, and didn't complain then.

All I can say to that is Whatever. That's a pretty selfish attitude you've got.

I think what he's saying is that there should be some controls over/discretion used in how/when/with whom information in shared because it almost cost him a deal and he'd like those opportunities to continue in the future, for him and others in this community.

That's great that you picked up some chips you wouldn't have otherwise known about. (And you don't have to explain it again, we get your point.) What I think maybe you fail to appreciate is how much that is the exception.

Read through enough of these threads and you'll see many instances where the excess attention caused the seller to increase the price or a deal in the making was sniped (and some even think intentionally sabotaged). I've seen it happen so much that I'm going to stop posting ads here for the most part, local or otherwise. And believe it or not, I think this benefits the community, not just myself. Case in point: this ad.

I have also followed this subforum, and I would say that the situation you're worried about (deal falls through because seller pulls out) is the exception, rather than the rule. Even if you look at this ad, where ~1200 chips are now selling for ~37 cents each and will probably go lower, this is still a reasonable deal and the chips will probably end up being picked up by someone on PCF.

This is clearly my opinion, but I'd say your proposed solution (no more posting craigslist ads publicly) would result in fewer folks getting good deals on chips.
