Anyone ever use alternative chip spacers?

I too have wondered why the plastic chip spacers were so expensive - I've usually seen them at 50 cents or $1.00 a piece or more. I have a few sets in flat cases where I might be able to use several dozen spacers to separate chips in barrels of 20, or to fill in the void left by 20 well used chips in plastic racks. (for the latter, you'd need spacers thinner than 0.15 or 3.81 mm).

This thread reminded me that a couple weeks ago I ran across some inexpensive craft discs/coins made of wood that are closer to $0.10 a piece that might work well as chip spacers. I haven't bought any myself, yet, though.

Here's a link on Amazon for 1 inch (25.4 mm) diameter discs that are 0.15 inches (3.81 mm) thick, which for a barrel of 20 would be 76.2 mm thick, so these are a little thicker than poker chips. They are made in different diameters and thicknesses.

Thin adhesive-backed foam (cut to fit one end of the barrel) works wonders, too. Also doesn't fall out when chips are removed, and doesn't risk scratching or damaging the chips.
I actually like this idea better than the plastic spaces. Plus you can pick different colored foam to use.

Additionally, if things are too tight, you can always shave a little off the chips with a rock tumbler.

Where can I get these / how can I make these?

Any crafts store (Michael's, Jo-Ann's, etc.) or Home Depot type store will have adhesive-backed foam in several thicknesses and sizes. Bunch on eBay, too. Cut to size with scissors.

Great, thanks. This will probably be better for my needs, as I have some racks for secondary chips that need a certain size to fill them out, and then I got other racks with primarys that need a bigger size to fill out.

You could try getting a piece of 1" foam backer rod (should be available from a home improvement store near you) and slicing it into thin discs with a razor blade knife. That stuff is pretty cheap. Might be easier to do that than cut a bunch of circles out of a flat sheet of foam.

Is this what you meant?
