No clue what is safe for chip racks, but recently bought a few racks from a casino environment and they are dirty and reak of smoke. Is it acceptable to clean them with hot soapy water?? Run through the dishwasher? Ultrasonic?? Just want to get the smoke smell off more than anything...and have them look less dingy as a close second benefit...any help would be appreciated.

vinegar and baking soda soak?

edit: i've never tried this on racks and have no idea if it will work or damage your racks.

Cant imagine it would...but that's why i posted here first...I don't think even an ultrasonic bath would hurt them...

Don't ever run them through dishwasher. If there is any remnant lead dust on them, it'll end up in your dishwasher and then on utensils and plates you eat from. Not a good end result. Plus, hooker juice. Nobody wants that stuff on their sippy cups.

If you have a convertible, just put them in the back seat, put the top down and go thru a car wash. If you don't have a convertible, just open the sun roof.

I have run Paulson brand racks through the ultrasonic with the same TSP mix used for chips and they came out great.

Thanks for the input! Dunno if it will remove the dingy fog look but certainly should help with the smoke.

I soak them in Dawn ultra / platinum and hot soapy water. I scrub them like doing any dishes. Use a scrubby sponge. They come out clean every time. I've never had an issue.

As far as the fog that is just the plastic. Some will be more clear than others just the nature of the raw material I think.

I also oil them and wipe with a micro fiber towel after they dry. I read somewhere it helps to not suck the oil from your chips. Seems to work.

As far as smoke....that just sucks. Never had to deal with it. I'd imagine vinegar but then they smell like vinegar. Maybe soak in simple green?

Or maybe soak in hot water and those "unstoppables" the febreeze pellets that are for the laundry.

Dishwasher high temps with detergent should do wonders for both the smell and crud. Don't worry about lead unless both your rinse and drain cycles don't work. Probably better than ultrasonic, I'd guess.

White vinegar solution soak for smoke smell if neither one works.

Thank you sir...you think better than ultrasonic??? I was going to soak in vinegar, then runthrough the ultrasonic to get the vinegar smell off...
