I’d like to know how others rank the materials chips are made of. Obviously this can differ depending on what is most important to you in a chip or set. Please share your ranking and why you’ve chosen your order. Thanks!

-Paulson
-CPC
-China Clay
-Cards Mold Ceramic (felt like it needs a category to itself)
-ABS
-Ceramic
-Plastic (Unweighted)

This is my list in order (best top - worst bottom) I have them in this order because of feel first sound second and weight third. Visual is important to me but I’ve seen beautiful chips and ugly chips in each of these categories, so visual for me doesn’t enter this ranking, but it may for you!

If you have something not in my list please add it to yours

-Paulson
-TRK leaded
-CPC and BCC (some BCCs are terrible and some are better than CPC)
-Cards Mold Ceramic (really these are the same as other ceramics but the mold makes a huge difference to me)
-Ceramic

Great list! Curious why China Clay is so low for you?

Haven’t yet accumulated enough Paulson’s to rank them and didn’t want to go with the wisdom of the crowd, so just of the chips I own enough to handle/shuffle/etc:

CPC
RHC
Cards Mold Ceramics
Spirit Mold/8V* CCs
Monaco Casino sluggos
Currently Produced CCs

*I like the sound/feel of Spirit Mold CCs better than 8V CCs but they’re less durable. I like the 8V CCs much more than the new ones available now feel-wise.

Yes, except for the weight, I really like the look/feel and I’m fine with the sound of DPS’s Monaco Casino slugged chips. /unpopularopinion

If I had to guess, I’d slot in chips I don’t have thusly:

(THC)
CPC
RHC
Cards Mold Ceramics
Spirit Mold/8V* CCs
(Quality Plastics: BJ, Matsui, Abbiati)
Monaco Casino sluggos
Currently Produced CCs

CPC chips also vary between molds so listing “CPC” as chip type doesn’t say much

The OP is specifically asking about the material though. Not just about favorite type of chips. It seems some people are just ranking their favorite types of chips. I don’t like RHCs but I love THCs but for the purpose of this question THC=RHC.

I thought about that but of the CPC molds I have samples of (CSQ, HHR, B-Mold, Scrown), I like them all better than the two RHC barrels I have. But yeah I probably should have spelled that out (if this comment was directed at me).

Also condition of chips matters. My RHC barrels are not mint/sharp while my CPC samples are. Maybe I’d like the RHCs better than CPCs of the same level of wear.

If that what he really meant then he stated off listing chips incorrectly IMO.

There’s really only 3 chip material types of course.

Compression clay
Ceramic
Plastic.

And as always with these threads, people will start debating the nuances anyways so…

I took it to mean form as well, like you distinguishing between Cards Mold ceramics vs. ceramics in general. So THCRHC necessarily and molds do make a difference.

Clay chips are made of somewhat complex compounds. There is even plastic in there. Some have lead, some brass, and lots of other materials. So not all clay chips are made of the same materials even though broadly we consider them “clay”. I wonder how much “clay” is in them anyway. Plastics can also be comprised of different materials as well. It’s even an entire field of materials science.

Have you played with Paulsons, TRKs, CPCs, or BCCs yet?

Ceramics are just much much nicer at around the same price. CCs color fades, they can be brittle, a little slippery, the sound isn’t great, the feel is a bit

I have Paulson and CPC not BCC or TRK’s I’m just the opposite between CC and ceramics.

I don’t know why. He specifically asks “I’d like to know how others rank the materials chips are made of.”.

I copied OPs categories and ranked them as he asked but I specifically said that they were The same as other ceramics.

The current CCs are just to slippery/waxy feeling for me. I know people have used super fine grit sandpaper to make them more grippy, and I assume they’d get less slippery with use (I only have new/newish samples to judge by) but that’s my primary reason for ranking CCs low.

We classify things the way we do as chippers as a basic frame of reference. We all know what’s meant when we say clay, ceramic, or plastic.

I’m gonna quit the forums if it gets to the point where I have to say “my fave chips are 42%silica, 12% leaded. 4% plastic..” etc etc

Since I don’t own as many kinds of chips as most of you, I am painting my opinions in very broad strokes anyway, but I think the execution has to matter. It’s not just an objective assessment of materials and composition. The shape of the chips affect the sound, for example. (I know I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.)

I’ve heard that. Guess my nose isn’t great cause I’ve never been able to smell my CC.
That’s one thing that doesn’t bother me about CCs unless I just haven’t encountered a particularly smelly set. To me they smell crayons-ish.
