Hello all!!! My wife and I are new to this forum and looking for some advise on purchasing our first set of chips. What do you all recommend and what chips should I look at purchasing first? My wife and I are a bit overwhelmed at all of the options. Suggestions and advice are welcome, thank you all in advance!

One thing I forgot to add, where is bear place to purchase chips once we determine what we want?

Thank for your reply, where would you recommend getting samples from?

Well that’s what I was hoping for but thank you for sending this link we will definitely read it!

Do you want chips with bears on them? Because I’ve seen a few sets like that. But if you’re looking for chips made for bears or made by bears, you might be out of luck.
But take a look at Apache - they’re a trusted vendor with a good variety of chips. Use the search function here to try to answer your inevitable questions.

I do like bears except the Chicago bears, bears on chips would be cool... on and on. Sorry for the typo lol it happens. I will sure check them out further, I did look at some of their stuff and tried calling a few times but no return call, maybe tomorrow. Thanks again and I’ll keep an eye out for bears:)

Some available here:

Most are used casino Paulsons, which some may consider the "gold standard" of set collectors here, but opinions vary. There are also some Bud Jones chips there.

Certain samples are available directly from the manufacturers. The Vendor section has many manufacturer/distributor members, and quite a few of them have samples sets that can be directly purchased.

The best way would be to try and meet some PCFers in your area that may have a big collection of chips from a variety of origins, but I can understand that the current pandemic situation naturally puts this in a nigh-impossible category.

Oh wow that’s a great idea! I would love to do that and see what’s out there. We actually all most pulled the trigger on a set of paulsons today but we didn’t. Thanks for the advice, we do not really know anyone in our area just yet.

Hello,

I am new to this forum too, welcome! I have used Apache poker chips in the past and Josh has been rock solid. Whichever vendor you decide to use, get samples first. It’s worth it in the end. Lots on info on the forum. Good luck!

bears on chips would be cool...

They are cool, and clay, and sold by the vendor classic poker chips.

Get a few samples and see if you like them! I absolutely LOVE mine and my average cost is less than $2/chip.

Everyone here will tell you how great Paulsons are. I will say for a first set, consider ceramics. @BR Pro Poker makes great chips (they made mine - check them out here https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/gene-kristil-micro-stakes-magic.53333/ ). Ceramics are a great chip, especially for a first set. Check them out at brpropoker.com you won't regret it.

Ceramics were my first. I would have been happy with Royals as my first set. Or Paulson. Or CPC. I mean, just buy one of each and rip the band-aid off

I would recommend getting in on the thread @allforcharity linked, and then get a ceramic sample from BR pro poker (nevada jacks are different from their other offerings in feel, but all good quality), and then a china clay sample (majestics/royals/dunes/pharaoh) and the monte carlo plastic slugged chips (so you understand why nobody recommends them) from Apache Poker Chips. That will give you a very wide range of stuff to evaluate and decide what you're willing to spend on chips. From there if you're going to spend more than a ceramic set, get some CPC samples as well.

I think it's cool that both, you and the wife, are both into chips. Makes it a lot easier, cause you are not having to explain yourself, why the set you have is not sufficient. Or if you are spending a bit more than you should have to.. Happy hunting.

Agreed! I'm brand new but my SO seems really happy about me taking up the hobby even after learning about the higher-end chip prices. I'll consider myself lucky on that front!

Its a matter of concessions. You compromise on what she wants and get it. She in turn would hopefully be open to what you want. If you happen to buy a little too much.. oops. In the end, everyone is happy, plus you are up a few nice sets! Be sure to post some pix.
