After I decided what chips I wanted, the next obvious decision is the chip breakdown. I found a few really thorough guides on here, however, I don't always know what stakes I'll be playing with. Because one game might be higher stakes than another, the current split I'm favoring is:
$1 - 150
$5 - 100
$10 - 100
$25 - 100
$50 - 50 (Could be dropped)
$100 - 50
$500 - 50 (Could be dropped)
Thoughts? The number of chips I can afford is a set of around 500 - 650.

100x$1s 200x$5s 200x$25 and 100x$100s will support any game at any stake better than the above 600 chips (If you want another 100x$5 wouldn't hurt)

More denomination is not better...

There are tons of break down threads, sometimes not very easy to find. For the most part it seems like many people when just starting out like extra denoms, because it's cool and more colors... but in reality it is just a pain in the butt when you have to split pots and counting out all ins.

I guess part of the question is what games will you be playing? Is it Holdem only or mixed games that mostly revolve around split pots rather high low/double boards ect.

Seems like you are not interested in fracs so maybe looking at $1/$1, $1/$2 or even $2/$5, you kind of have to have some idea when building a set. For example if playing $1/$1 one might suggest

(200) $1/(300) $5/(80) $25/(20) $100s would probably recommend exactly the same for $1/$2

But if going for $2/$5 I would probably go (100) $1/(300) $5/(160) $25 (40) $100

With any breakdown I would not suggest less than (200) $5s as they will likely be your workhorse chips.

Determining what stakes you should play depends on what you and your crew are comfortable with playing. This is all relative to how many big blinds you can buy. Typically its between 100 and 200 big blinds, we typically play $.25/$.50 with $100 max buy in which is 200 big blinds but also some play it 100 BBs or $50 max. So if leaning towards $2/$5 you are looking at $500 buy in for 100 BBs.

Then how many rebuys is your average player carrying (typically 2 - 3) so if everyone says yes to $2/$5 but only bring $500, then likely you guys are playing out side your comfort zone. You may want to choose something like $1/$2 so they have a bit of wiggle room with rebuys, you can gym

The simple answer to the question of breakdown is 100/200/200/80/20 or 100/200/200/100 with each denomination increment at 4 to 5x

It a bit hard to help when you not even sure of what stake you are playing

$1 - 150
$5 - 100
$10 - 100
$25 - 100
$50 - 50 (Could be dropped)
$100 - 50
$500 - 50 (Could be dropped)

This felt like someone saying I want to order something to eat but I dunno what I want to eat, so you ordered every dish on the menu instead

I forgot another way to get a set is by "renting" chips from your local Casino

Just buy the chips you want and take them home (It is not quite that simple but it can be done)

Some sound advice for Holdem type games in this thread

With the prices TCR is offering during sales...renting a set from a casino is nuts (if you only need/want 1 set)
TCR chips have always increased in value.

You can own a decent set for the price of 2 racks of fivers and often they will be in better condition too

Well sure. If he has an extra $30k laying around to rent chips. Take out the 500s and it is still going to cost over $8k.

25¢, $1, $5, $20, $100 works for most. You listed a $10 and a $50. Don’t see many (if any) of those around so I’m assuming you’re doing a relabel or custom. Lose those. Go with a $20 IMO. Add a frac just in case.

I’m sure many others will make this point, but there is really no need for $10 and $50 denoms. I would lose those. If you were to add anything, just for fun, maybe a $2 chip.

These are denoms you should focus on, and to echo others - there are good threads with break down on the forums
25c
$1
$5
$25
$100

Premise 1) your budget does not afford these denoms:
$10 - only if you are not using 1s and or 5s should you have a $10, typically some odd $2 $10 thing with betting
$50 - there is an old superstition about 50 dollar bills (USD) and it crosses over to chip, but still this is a waste and all round a bad denom
$500 - if your budget for chips is 650 you'll never need to use one of these.

Yes and No

For small games sure, for bigger games never, you have almost zero chip security

Larger denominations should always be custom or live

PS I have a small cash set mostly from TCR, and a large tournament set from TCR

The set I use the most (small stakes cash games, $40-$100 buy ins, 25/50¢ ante dealer's choice with $2/5 max bet raise per round, and $1/2 NLHE and PLO/Pineapple) is cheapo Brybelly Eclipse chips:

760 chips in travel case (plus 50 no value marker/declare chips)
300 brown 25¢
250 gray $1
160 red $5
40 green $25
10 black $100

with an additional (from sample sets)
5 orange 50¢
5 blue $10
5 light blue $50
5 purple $500
5 yellow $1000
5 pink $5000

140 spare chips in an extra storage case
55 brown 25¢
5 gray $1
45 red $5
15 green $25
20 black $100

For sure you don't need the same breakdown - we just like playing with decent sized stacks of chips, even if they are 25¢ and $1s... :D

I've been doing a live game on and off for about 17 years and my guys/gals like a taller starting stack;
$40 buy in
20- 25¢ chips
20- $1 chips
3- $5 chips

This was originally a $20 buy/rebuy at the felt, game until around 2015 or so when $20 didn't feel like a challenge and people were playing reckless and angry they had to felt to buy back in. The old $20 buy in was a barrel each of the 25¢ and $1s and $5s only came out for rebuy.

I have a 1000 chip set that works for 20 players (never had to use them all for Live Poker)
400- 25¢
400- $1
160- $5
40- $25
