I was led to believe that most beautiful classic sets come from India.
Don't remember company name.

yah, saw a youtube video about that. Hand made and a lot of details and 'standards', like the height of each piece. If I recall correctly, the knight is apparently the most difficult piece to make.

That's the one

Chess porn set is a good thing. This was the Soviet Grandmaster "Bronstein" set circa 1965 that I'd set up in our meetup sessions last month for them to blitz.

I started with Staunton design (as most ppl do) but over time, I'm swayed by the beauty of the Soviet chess designs.

More pron? :cool

For a very long time I've been in love with the idea of using wargaming miniatures to create a custom chess set, with a nice custom table to boot. There's so many factions that you could pull from using Warmachine, Warhammer, and plenty of others to make each side unique- and with the right models, still clear as to which piece each model represents despite having asymmetric looks between yours & your opponents pieces (or hell, use the same for both sides painted differently would work, too).

Threw this example together using a faction from Warmachine:

If I'd have kept up with the painting hobby it'd be extra fun to be able to do them all up yourself, but commissioning a good artist to make them look studio quality like their photos would probably be worth it. Some day, maybe!

Warhammer Chess? Check out this fella's project!

Nice! Not surprising that the idea has been done. I love the ability to really personalize and make the models your own. Just so many options. I don’t even play much chess, but it’d be such a rad display piece if nothing else!

If anyone is interested in The Civil War chess & checker set from the 80's lmk. I think Danbury Mint made it. It's in a storage box but I can get it out for pics if necessary. Pieces are mint but if I remember correctly the board has a tiny ding in one of the corners.

My personal favorite set, but I don't even know who made it. I love that the queenside pieces are different from the king side pieces. The knights in this set are outstanding and have a lot of detail as well. I've only used it for a handful of games sadly. This was bought used on eBay about 25 years ago by my parents as a birthday gift. It showed up to the house caked it tobacco smoke and was hand cleaned. A few of the fragile parts (knight spear tip) came broken, but is sitting in the drawer. I've always meant to get it fixed up and display it, but the silver that oxidizes means I need to clean it often and I don't want to do that. Plus I don't have any idea who I could take this to to fix some of the small things.

Chess pron's back with another vintage Soviet set for this week! Similar in design to the one I posted earlier - 1960 GM2 Bronstein - but this should be a decade earlier circa 1950s. There's a certain elegance to Soviet chess design patterns.

Thanks for all the inspiration pics! I ended up with a Latvian replica set from Etsy and am loving it. I’m starting to think that one should have as many chess setups as chip sets. :)
