Ceramic vs. China Clays (1 Viewer)

Outside of a group buy, sun-fly hybrids are not practical for a new chipper with a limited budget, because art fees and shipping from China are HUGE.

Check out @ABC Gifts and Awards for ceramic menus, not just stock designs.
Even smaller hybrid sets from Sun-Fly aren't that expensive. No art fees afaik, and shipping adds about 15c/chip to the cost on smaller orders. Final shipped cost per chip for custom 43mm Sun-Fly hybrids is similar to that of custom 43mm ceramics ordered from US vendors.

Granted, group buy orders from Sun-Fly do result in slightly lower costs per chip, and bulk shipping rates lower that cost per chip as well, but individual custom orders are not prohibitively expensive when compared to other custom ceramic options.

For smaller orders you end up around or just under 1$ per chip. I have ordered twice, 600 and 900 chips, both times the cost per chip was 0.6$ and shipping 170$ and 260$ (i ordered with racks second time).

Edit/ it's going to be under 1$. For my first order it was about 0.9$ shipped to me in Sweden. I'm guessing shipping is similar to you in us/can. Second order is more difficult to say exactly, since there are dealer button and racks, but i'm going to guess just about the same per chip, maybe less.

I recently purchased ceramics and they are terrific. Never bought samples of them but I did buy samples of CC before I purchased any ceramics. I like CC enough, but as some said, durability for them is an issue for me, especially playing over a hard kitchen floor. The ceramics I have do not break when they fell multiple times on the floor.

They even have a texture to them that really helps them not be slippery or have any spinners. Stacks stay pretty stable. One issue some might have with ceramics (especially some with san paper-like texture) are that they make pretty loud shuffling noise when raking in chips, but it's a nonissue for me.

Also you shouldn't have to worry about cleaning/oiling them compared to CC or Paulsons.

I'm not certain of my standing among all the fine chippers here, but I will venture to guess that my ~20k ceramic chips puts me towards the top. Therefore, I feel like that could qualify me to have an opinion.

Skip the China Clays and go to casino ceramics (Chipcos) or custom 43mm Sunfly Hybrids (ceramics with center recess for label).

Casino used Chipcos run from $0.05 - $0.75 depending on rarity or condition, generally in the $0.10 - $0.25 range.

43mm Sunfly Hybrids are about $0.60, but roughly $0.75 each when factoring in design and shipping costs. You may not be ready for the custom route just yet, but you'll get there. When you do, speak to @p5woody because he is a design genius

Happy to answer any questions you have, so feel free to PM me.

I played set of ceramic Old Havana Club for 5 years 2 days a week, 10 hour a day. After that time you have to closely inspect used chips and compare it to new one to notice any sign of wear. I could see some pale pigment but it was hardly noticible. 2 chips were broken after being slammed down by frustrated players. No rounding on the edge were noticed.
Well if you not running a 24/7 operation ceramics are good economic option. Cheap, good looking, reliable.

I went to the sun fly web site, but don’t see “hybrids” listed. Just PolyChrom, PolyInno, PolyClay and PolySpectra. Are they all hybrids?

The polyinno line is their hybrid chip (because it combines a ceramic chip with a recess and label).

Thx, what are the others, then? In terms of comparing them to other chips?

Polychrome is their standard ceramic blank, polyclay chips have mold markings/impressions (cards, diamonds, or custom images), and polyspectra is their low-cost single-color product for no-value chips like roulette chips or bland tourney sets.

So PolyChrom would be like Tiki Kings or Muertos? And the ABC Chipco blank is different from any of these?

This is the only China Klay I really like

Wow, this is EXACTLY what I was going to say.

Tried most of the china clays...they’re ok but nothing special. I absolutely Love the ABC ceramics. And don't forget that you can customize some of the offerings like the Dia de los Muertos. And (and this is a HUGE plus) you can order larger 43mm chips if so desired. My fivers are oversized because they make my low stakes games feel more "special".

Some of you guys are really bashing my products. Not sure if you know how much time we work with the makers of these chips to improve quality over the years.
The Majestic, Dunes, Pharaoh’s, and Royals are incredible chips for people that can’t afford casino quality items.

Agreed - honestly you get 1000x better value when you compare genuine quality vs purpose with Apache.

All depends on a player/hosts price range. Yes Paulson > "china clays" in quality, but china clays have better value by a long shot.

I haven't gotten my hands on Royals yet but I've heard fantastic things - and wayyy better than the minimum $4/chip (often $10-$20+) you'll pay for Paulson 43mm

I can attest that the Royals are amazing. I've got a couple of weeks to wait for my custom labels to arrive, but the sample labels I received are perfect, and I have received glowing reviews from my poker buddies to this point.

I think a lot of people over estimate how much other people care about the minute differences in quality once you go beyond a certain point.

I borrow a friend's Royals frequently. I love them. Can I tell the quality difference between them and Paulson's? Of course. Is it such a big difference I'm willing to pay the upcharge? Not really.

Plus I just don't like traditional ceramics. Too clinky. And I'm not a fan of full printing on the chip face. The only ceramics I've ever liked are Sunfly polyinnos. And that's because they don't really feel or sound like a traditional ceramic.

Keep on keeping on @Apache. I look forward to your next CC.

Your products - in particular the Royals are the best on the market at their price point. But it's just like anything else - if you're used to a Cadillac, you're probably not going to enjoy test driving a Chevy Cruze.

Absolutely true. When I first started looking at chips, I got a bunch of various samples. I'll admit that I couldn't immediately tell the difference between china clays and paulson THC's. And then I went to a casino and thought their worn, giant inlay RHC's were plastic.
