Azatar's all the way.

Anyone can get PNY's

I don't think accessibility (or general condition) is supposed to be a factor in these contests - assume all chips are mint and equally available? @jbutler

That said, this is probably the closest matchup of the top 16 for me. Both sets are exceptionally well-done. When it comes down to it though, there's one that I would give my left nut for, and one that I have passed on at relatively reasonable prices on hundreds of occasions... ;)

That's how the competition was conceived, but obv everyone can do what they want, I guess.

I understand the exclusivity of the Aztars, and they have some nice spots, but hot stamps are a meh for me and the Aztars have especially blah hot stamps.

It's so interesting isn't it? Different strokes.

I've recently been bitten by an affinity for hot stamp chips (big new set incoming from Spinetti's, YAY!). And yet, I agree with you @Jeff, I've never liked this Aztar set. Maybe it's because the base colors (except maybe the green), look like options for painting a baby's room -- what is up with all of the pastels? Just hits my chip palette exactly wrong.

Finally, one set that never needs to come to my house!

EDIT: No offense intended to the Aztar lovers. Agree that this is one of the most exclusive sets out there. I've just always preferred very bold colors.

I am a fan of the HOT Stamp, not too crazy about the either molds but to choose one I go with the Aztar.

I'm a big fan of hot-stamped tournament sets, and I've never been a huge fan of the PNY chips (giant inlay bias I suppose). However, I have to agree that the Aztar spotted tournament chips never really did it for me the way it does for others. Maybe it's the colors. Maybe I'm biased because I have the other Aztar hot-stamped set and just prefer the more traditional solids/colors.

Yeah, definitely different strokes and I don't mean to bad-mouth this set, its one of the really exclusive ones. We all have our natural preferences.

I thought all of the really premium sets stopped by your place for a while, say it ain't so!

Speaking of these striped Aztar's, who picked up the Hungry Frog tribute set from Fabian? Pretty sure he sold it, right?

I want to throw a flag on this play. As far as I know, the PNY never opened. It was planned, but was never more than a fantasy casino. Granted, the fantasy of a large, and then eventually bankrupt company, but a fantasy nonetheless.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but until then, I must select the Aztars by default.

Overruled

Apologies, but the PNYs look like a chip a tourist would buy in bulk from guy in a sketchy long trench coat. Using similar colored buildings on giant inlays for the $5, $20, and $100 just doesn't work, at all. I understand the complaint that the Aztars are a bit pastel in the color wheel, but that makes them stand out from the crowd. As does the hot stamp for the set. Advantage, Aztars.

You think Rockefeller Center and the Statue of Liberty are similar? o_O Tourists... :D

Aside from the snapper inlay, I think the PNY inlays are incredibly well done, given that yes, they are several pictures of landmark buildings. Mixing up close-up & distant shots, daytime vs night vs dusk/sunset, makes what could have been a boring set of inlays interesting. And given the theme, I think it's the perfect example of well executed giant inlays (which I typically don't like).

Put me in the boat of not understanding the swooning over the Aztars tourneys, and this is coming from one who loves hot stamps. The 1k chips rock but the rest, between the muted pastel colors, similar colored 100s & 500s, and a relatively boring stamp, these are kinda "meh" for me.

PZ - the chips were made for a casino, which is all that matters. The fact they never got play because it never opened isn't one of the factors I think people are looking at. It's much different than a custom set which didn't have to pass through gaming commission boards and aren't exclusively registered with Paulson for edgespots and base colors, etc

There was a post somewhere about a casino/boat in the Maritimes somewhere that had the same overall design as the PNYs. Was it owned by the same company, or did Paulson have an inlay designer at the time that really liked templates?

spotted Aztar is the best tourney set........................................................
