are there multiple versions that don't say "Paulson"? These seem to be the 98

Yes, but the 98 $5 versions had two different reds. Not very noticeable until you have them both. It’s just a shade different. Mine are the pinker version.

Gosh, I really feel like there are actually so many different shades of red, even within my own set. I’ve got 400 of these $5s and there are many variations. The $1s are no different/better. I’ve got 3-4 shades of blue. The $25 also has different shades on the spots.

None of it bothers me, personally. I knew all this before I purchased a set and it’s pretty easy on thr eyes since they are so cool!

You are right. I’ve seen 3 diff shades of red. And god knows how many shades of blue.

I’ve been lucky to nail them down and all my reds and blues match perfectly. But it’s taken a lot of racks hahaha

Are all these shades intentional- or was there something with the CDI chips that caused them to fade or a quality control thing- I am just curious since my understanding is they were intended for the consumer market and they did several runs. I love this set so much any knowledge is great because it has been like the gift that keeps on giving

It’s weird because BCC CDI $1s, $5s, and even $25s also have this same color inconsistency. What’s up with that?

They happen due to the vagaries of manufacturing. Thousands and thousands (millions?) of these chips were made over years and years and different batches, not everything was computer controlled.
Plus they were sold to the public and who knows what they did with them, stored them in sunlight, in a warm garage, by the pool deck, or God forbid even played with them regularly, spilled drinks on them, etc
