So we've done the Greatest of All Time Custom Chip Set and we've nominated plenty of members' specific casino sets to calendars, but what is PCF's favorite casino chip set of all time?

Not an individual member's set. @gopherblue's Riversides are stunning and @bergs' Dunes tourney set is truly epic (an overused word that is here absolutely appropriate), but we're not honoring about the ridiculous amount of time, effort, and money it takes to put these sets together, as unbelievable as some of them are. And we're not honoring single chips within sets. We're honoring the full, casino set itself. So we're talking about the casinos that have or had the best chips when viewed as a whole set including all denominations within a specific edition of their chips: Mapes; Dunes; Ritz; Tropicana; Aztar tourney chips; and all the beautiful currently live racks.

The process will be a standard sweet 16 bracket. Everyone will list their top ten in no particular order in this thread and I'll take everyone's nominations and seed the sweet 16 according to the support each set gets here.

The deadline for submission of top tens will be Monday, February 22, 2016 at 10am, EST. Guidelines for top tens are below. You must follow the below guidelines or your nominations will not be counted. See in particular number 5. PHOTOS ARE REQUIRED. I know this is a pain in the ass, but I promise it is more of a pain in the ass to have to determine which chips someone means when they just post "Terrible's". That could mean half a dozen different sets. For the sake of clarity, you have to include photos.

(1) All your nominations must be in the same post. Your first post to include any nominations will be your only post counted, so continue to edit it if you have to add/remove later. No nominations posted in second or third posts will be counted unless they are also edited into your first nomination list in this thread. Feel free to post plenty otherwise advocating for sets - just limit your nominations to one post.
(2) You are limited to 10 nominations. If you list more than 10, only the first 10 listed will be counted.
(3) Any list posted or edited after the above stated deadline is void and will not be counted.
(4) Nominations must be for certain casinos and certain editions of chips. So if someone nominates the Dunes, they must specify the edition (no need to know the nomenclature to refer to the specific issue - that's the purpose of the photo requirement below) that they intend to nominate and only chips within that edition will be considered nominated.
(5) Your list MUST include photos of at least one of the chips from each of your nominated sets. This is necessary to avoid confusion as to, for instance, which edition of the Tropicana rack you intend to nominate. ChipGuide is your friend. Feel free to sit back and just steal photos from others' lists, but your post must include photos. Any nomination without photos is void and will not be counted.

So lots of buzz-killing rules, but this should be fun. I have my money on a few specific sets making the Final Four, but we shall see.

And limiting it to 16 means not quite so many poll threads clogging up the forum. After this nomination thread there will be 8 in the first week, 4 in the second week, 2 in the third week, and the final single poll in the fourth week.

Already got a question via PM. And a good one!

Yes, the various WSOP sets and specific tourney series sets - so long as they were produced for play in casinos! - can count here as casino sets.

Good thread!

[Edit: I hate to say it, but having seen some of the lists below, many of you are playing small ball, only selecting casino racks that are currently held by chippers. Gotta think bigger.]

This is going to be fun...

1. Tropicana, 1st Edition. Frankly, both these and the Trop 2nd Paulsons are magnificent, but these are TRKs. So there's that.

Trop 1st TRKs.jpg

2. President Casino New Yorker, 1st Edition. Probably one of the greatest, all-around thematic designs. Colors and spots are fantastic, photo inlays are color-matched to chip and picture iconic NYC landmarks.

pny.jpg

3. Bellagio, 2nd Edition. It was a toss-up between the Bellagio and Aria. Both are simply done inlays on gorgeous chips. Plus, they go all the way up to $100,000 (and perhaps beyond?).

bellagio.jpg

4. Sands, Las Vegas, 1956 Edition TRKs. Because these kick old-school ass.

sands.jpg

5. Palais des Congres, Montreal, 1st Edition. Great colors and simple shaped inlays.

palais.jpg

palais2.jpg

6. Rainbow Club, Gardena, Calif. 1950s. My absolute grail set. Just try to find a boring chip in this rack.

Rainbow.jpg

7. Palace Club, Reno, 1960s-70s. Classic, old-skool look.

palace.png

8. The Mint, Las Vegas, 1964. Ditto, plus shaped inlays (including saw-tooth!).

mint.png

9. Vineyard Casino, California, 1995. Cliche, but cliche for a reason. These are gorgeous.

10. Riverside, Reno, 1964. Somebody had to do it.

...And one more for good luck?

Foxwoods current rack.

I don't know about you guys but I'm thinking the Point Defiance sets should probably just be handed the trophy, it'll save us all time... ;)

Fun thread, can't wait to follow it and get some of my own nominations up later when I get some time to look for pics.

Certainly I expect to be doing some editing, but these are my first 8 thoughts. Some will say some are insane (Sands, Borgata), but what can I say? They are some of my favorites.

2. Lakeshore Inn - I need sunglasses when looking at that $1. Hotstamps, shaped inlays, great colors, beautiful classic inlay. What more do you want? Even better that this is a set owned by a PCF member

Honorable mention #2 - Casablanca's. I have no idea what issue is what, what's primary, what's secondary, etc. That's part of the awesome - so many great chips, so many options.

Honorable Mention #1 - SPM Cash Set. Amazing shufflers, great inlay, simple but effective spots & colors.

stardust_poker_mansion_sample_set.jpg

And now for the top ten, starting at the bottom...

#10 - Aztar hotstamped tourney set. This is probably the brightest, most complex-spotted hotstamp tourney set I've seen from a casino. Looks great! Just hate the mold.

cd279f2d5a32ed91e72f9dd36522795d.jpg

#9 - Aviation Club de France THC tourney set. Those colors....dayum. So sick! This set would be rated higher if not for the inlays (which are essentially static), and the fact that it is a tournament set is somewhat limiting...no fracs, no Paulson roulettes in the same vein as the tourney chips. But yeah...phenomenal set.

507085IMG20150718144441.jpg

#8 - Empress Primaries. Love the simple, shaped inlays. Really love the $1's and $100-$1k. Wish they had house fracs!

full

#7 - Dunes. Shaped inlays, great colors. Don't care for that house mold, though.

dunescash-png.30561

#6 - Trop 2nd Editions. Great mold, great inlays, great history, great Paulsons.

a80efd7db90a78c7d402b32dba7d9cf1.jpg

#5 - Trop 1st Editions. Great mold, great inlays, great history, great TRK's, and one of the greatest fracs ever.

7560-jpg.7575

#4 - Mapes. Great colors, great inlay. And that $1...man, that $1...

4548-1255716402-a65e0417dea34d162c1005d3436b3885-jpg.45370

#3 - Pick Hobson's Riversides. Love the colors on these! Easily my favorite TRK set.

20160209_001836.jpg

#2 - Lakeshore Inn. Wouldn't have thought that a casino set could be so amazing. Colors are incredible, and three varieties of fracs/NCV's!

IMG_2035.jpg

And finishing in the top slot is....PCA Secondaries!.

So, it doesn't have to be a set of chips that can be accumulated? For instance, the TRK sands qualifies above? (You barely ever see one of those chips)

Correct. Has nothing to do with collectibility, only with the quality of the design of the chips and the entire set as a whole.

I'll get pics later.

Starting my list:

1- Bellagio
2- Mesquite Star
3- Mapes
4- Terribles St. Jo's
5- Point Defiance
6- PCNY's
7- Bally's
8- Par-A-Dice

Do you have more pictures of this set. I mean lots of them. WOW...............I'd love to check them out.

Sadly all the best pics exist only on google search. The tourney chips are Northern Fergs and he used imageshack and all the links are broken. :( I only have 3 sample chips. :(

I wish you made this thread just before the CCGTCC convention, so I could just sit and peruse through 100s of binders of chips.

On the other hand, I'm glad you didn't. The last time I went to the CCGTCC convention, it cost me a lot of money "perusing" those books.

Personally at a glance I'm not happy with the direction this thread has taken. Lots of highly sought after/highly collected sets in here but I HAVE to assume there are casino sets out there that are still live and/or were cancelled and shredded that are/were mind blowing.

To think the best looking sets of all time have all ended up being available to the masses... the math just doesn't work in my head. Then again I don't have anything to add, so maybe.

Posts like that take a while to ruminate. [emoji6]

You're probably not entirely off-base, but let's chew on this a bit. The reason most PCF'ers would know about a casino's complete issue of chips is because either A) they've seen pron of it before (Trop 1st's), B) were able to buy it , or C) it's still live (Bellagio, Ceasars, and Aria are all pictured above). The ones that are still live have probably shown up in the lists because they're places known for poker. Places like Riviera (shithole & 'sploded anyway), Excalibur (aging, "family"-centric), and The Linq (cheap) aren't likely to show up in our lists since they don't cater to our crowd.

Furthermore, many places are going much cheaper with their chips these days. The Cromwell - a somewhat higher end boutique hotel/casino - uses fairly basic plastic chips. The SLS - supposedly a high-end place, has one of the crapiest inlays I've ever seen. Flamingo is slowly transitioning to some kind of plastic or hybrid chip. And the South Point...gawd, the South Point...their chips are Paulsons on a house mold, but they're just about as basic and ugly as can be. Basically, the artistry that was once pervasive throughout Vegas chipping is fading away.

As for historical sets, if they weren't/aren't realistically available to us to use or collect, then we're not likely to know about them. I'd guess that the Stardust & others had some nice stuff, but you just rarely set it. And those sets that did exist were probably somewhat basic to begin with until C&J/Paulson started adding more and more spot patterns and colors into the mix.

So I get what you're saying, and I agree to a certain extent - there probably are a fair number of awesome chip issues out there that are under-represented in this list. There's just probably not a lot of us in a position to readily know what those are.

And I just realized I forgot one that's awesome...gotta go edit my list.

Awesome thread. Let me start my list. Pics (stolen cause I don't own any of these sets) to be added later.

It's both a casino and a fantasy line. Unfortunately the chips in the picture up above are the fantasy chips. The casino chips have a house mold, are mostly 414-spotted, and look like...

36590.jpg

I personally don't know which are the casino and which are the fantasy, but to answer the question, the fantasy chips would not count in this contest, only the original chips produced for use in the casino.
