Hello All,

newbie to the Forum so newbie questions i'm afraid , apologies if this is answered elsewhere.

Why do most people seem to have two sets , one for cash games and one for tournament games , is it not possible to have one set that would do both ?

The reason I ask is that i'm taking the plunge with a small cash set but i'm wondering if i accumulate more chips over time i can use it for both purposes.

Hi,

The problem is that tournament chips could easily move from the tournament to the cash table.

So to avoid that, use two different sets.
Or at the very least, if you want the same chips, if your cash set uses denom. 0.25, 1, 5 and 25 then use a T100-based tournament breakdown.

Awesome , thank you for explaining.

Is there a model set up for combined cash and tournament set that I could look at to see how the denominations might work ?

Yip, as above. If you run a tourney and cash game side by side, it becomes tricky to manage. A player could buy into the Tourney for £5 and get 5000 chips, but then sneak some of those chips into the cash table for substantially more value.

When I bought my ceramic set I balanced the denoms so I could do exactly what you say - although I never run 2 games side by side so it wouldn't be an issue for me. But I'm now putting together a dedicated cash set, y'know, because more chips is better  :ROFLMAO:

I made a post about basic tournament setups here:

As far as cash goes, that's really up to you and dependent on the stakes you play. Personally I use:

200 x .25
300 x $1
200 x $5
80 x $20/$25
20 x $100

This covers me from my current stakes of .25/.50 up through a smaller 1/2 game. Plus gives me enough quarters for when I do small dealers choice nights at .50/1 limits.

A somewhat accepted standard for .25/.25 or .25/50 is:

120 x .25
200 x $1
200 x $5
80 x a mix of $20/$25 and $100

What are the stakes of your cash game ?

Not high , maybe 30$ buy-in , with a possible re-buy but not much more than that , so i've ordered some 1s & 5s and 25s . but perhaps if i get some 50c chips for the cash game i can use the 25s with some 50s and 100s for a tournament ?

Thank you . looks like i need to get some 'fracs' if thats the right terminology for my cash game ( i currently have ordered 200 x1s 100 x5s & 100 x 25s) and some higher denoms too.

Stay away from 50c chips IMO. There are VERY few instances where they make sense. In general, don't use a chip that is just 2x the size of the previous chip. The only real exception is the 500 and 1000 chip.

Yup, correct word :)
You ideally want the values to go up in 4x or 5x amounts. You have a good starting point already with what you have - so some $0.25 fracs would be ideal. All depends on the minimum blinds.
My game plays 5p / 10p blinds so the chips start at 5c, 25c, $1, $5 (and maybe $25 when we get rich enough hah) :nailbite:

thank you , thats really helpful.

I know i can get some 100s and 500s but ive never seen any Lady Luck chips at 0.25 for sale , ive only seen 0.5c did they make any 0.25c?

If your cash game buy-ins are $30 with a few rebuys, you probably don’t need $100 chips. If you have ten players, and 10 rebuys, for example, that’s $600. 100 $5’s, and 100 $1’s covers that, plus some. But to future-proof your cash set (assuming you’re playing.25/.25 blinds) you could get:
.25 x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 200

You could add some $20 chips or plaques in case you have a huge night, or $20 bills could play.

Then, your tourney chips could start with T25 or T100, with no overlap.

If you play let's say NL30 (or NL25) on blinds 25c - 25c, I think you would be just fine for 10 players with :
25c x 120
1 x 200
5 x 180

--> 500 chips

And then you can have a typical T25 tournament set with T10,000 starting stack. An example:
120 x T25
120 x T100
50 x T500
80 x T1000 (incl. chips to color-up the T25 and T100)
30 x T5000 (incl. chips for deeper play (T20,000), or for one rebuy per player and to color-up the T500)

--> 400 chips

There are also other possible breakdowns, as mentionned by @Legend5555 .

Don't hesitate to buy few spares in case of loss or break.

I've only seen the pink 50c's, so not sure either way on the 25c.
If you are building a Lady Luck set you may be better off buying up some chips you like the look of and relabelling them. @Gear seems to be the go to guy for labels around here. I struggled to find nice 5c and 25c chips, so bought chips I liked and will be adding my own labels. Cheers.
