Good evening Poker Chip Forum. I’m looking for feedback on a cash game chip set I’m planning on building.

For backstory, our game has evolved into a .10/.20 cash game that provides a great deal of action. We’re basically off tournaments at the moment and only a higher stakes, deep stack, 3 table tourney has any chance of being spread in our card room. Our players are loose and live and we have many $15+ pots with a fair number of them in the $20-30 range.

Our current set consists of .10’s. 50’s, 100’s, 5.00’s, 20.00’s with the 3 lower chips being the workhorses. We had nearly 20 $5.00’s in play last night as we usually utilize them for rebuys. We have yet to use the $20.00’s as we have plenty of $5.00’s.

For up to 10 players I was wondering about something along these lines.

.25’s x 200.
.50’s. X 300
1.00’s x 400
5.00’s x 100
10.00’s x 1 barrel
25.00 x 1 barrel

Personally, I think this would work well but interested in feedback.

Why are you getting $10's?

You can’t really play 0.1/0.2 with quarters. These denoms make more sense to use for those stakes:
5c, 25c, $1, $5, $25

Personally, I would make the game 25c/25c instead and go something like:

25c x 100-200
$1 x 200-300
$5 x 100-200
$25 x 100 or less

Use whatever denoms that work for your game but don’t use denoms that are too close to each other. If you have a 25c chip, you don’t need a 50c. If you have a $5 chip, you don’t need a $10 etc

Any weird combination of denomination can work to a certain degree but not without MAJOR complain from experience player / host

So ya, this would not work well at all

+1 to this if you moving up to 25c/25c Stake

Or if you want to do 10c/20c stake

I used 10c 50c $1 $5 $25 ($20 will work fine too)

I’m sorry. The new set is for a .25/.50 cash game.

I screwed this thread out of the gate.

The new set is for a .25/.50 game

Genius. I sort of forgot the general consensus on .25’s and .50’s is that if need the .25’s you don’t need the .50’s

Now the set is coming together in my head. Almost on to phase 2 - quantities to well cover up to a 10 handed (rare and not my preference) table and then onto the discussion of what to purchase and how including any concept of mixing (types, makes, models) etc.

That make a lot more sense

$15 to $30 is somewhat small in term of BB that only 30 to 60bb, especially if the pot is multi-way, more than 2 persons.

It might be because the group is still in the mid of moving up the stake, but you are going to find that $5 is going to be your most used workhorse chip if your group grow properly

25c x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 200
$20/25 x 100 or $20/25 x 80 + $100 x 20

Will be the breakdown I used for 25/50 stake game.

If you will like more chips, you can add in more $5 as these will be the main workhorse chips especially when the game get deeper stake late into the session

You can also consider doing something special for your high value chip like using Plaques for example

Ken, I play .25/.50 4-8 handed and ended up tilting my set toward more 1's. 100 quarters, 200 $1's and 100 $5's. I have 100 $25's for backup but don't usually end up getting them out.

Sounds like your game can be slightly bigger, so you may need two racks of 5's

Another factor to consider is how long a typical session will last.

A 7 hour session is going to use way more large denomination chips than said a 3-4 hour session

Our sessions tend to run between 5 and 7 hours, in the 7:30-12:30 and the occasional 7:30-2:30 range.

Your game plays fairly big even for a 0.25/0.50 game, but the standard 600 chip breakdown has already been stated. Max 100 quarters. Calculate your total bank needs on the biggest night, if it's smaller than $3000-4000 then you're probably ok.

Also should mention max initial buy in. I play in a game with $.25/$.50 and everyone buys in for $25, we might get two barrels of $5s in play with that game.

We also play in a $.25/$.50 game that plays 8 handed and we often have 14 - 16 rebuys in the first orbit and most for $200 until they can have 300. We have had $100 chips in play in one orbit. Obviously this should be a $1/$2 game or higher but they like fracs.

Sounds like this group should be playing $.25/$.25 as a $25 buying will get you atleast 100BBs, whereas plaing $.25/$.50 will only give you 50BBs on a $25 buy in. The sound limpy so maybe not a huge deal BUT 50BB max buy in IS shirt stack poker. You can not set up a proper betting structure that allows for progression, maybe for a single hand but if that hand goes down hill you are short stacked and looming for a shove to double up. It's not light and fun.

I'm going to suggest $.25/$.25 for now with $25 buy ins... building the set for up to 10 players I would say.

12 × $.25 = $3 x 10 = 120
17 x $1 = $17 x 10 = 170
1 x $5 = $5 X 10 = 10

Rebuys 1 - 5
5 x $1 = $5 x 5 = 25
4 x $5 = $20 x 5 = 20

Rebuys 6 - 20
5 x $5 = $25 x 15 = 75

Rebuys 21 - 40
1 x $25 = $25 × 20 = 20

Total set:
$.25 = 120
$1 = 200
$5 = 160
$25 = 20

That's a 500 chip set with a bank of over $1,500 and should work well for this game.

If buy ins are $50 I would change to
(220) $5 (60) $25. Bringing the bank closer to $3k. And our chip set has moved up to 600 chips.

If buy ins are $100, we don't need as many quarters, they are just for blinds at this level.

(100) $.25
(200) $1
(300) $5
(80) $25
(20) $100

Now with a bank of $5,700 even if you get that crazy deep night this will cover! But now up to a 700 chip set.

I hate odd #s of racks in a set so to cover everything future proofing included as the group continues to mature and up the stakes I would go for an 800 chip set of

(160) $.25 (extra quarters while the game still plays small)
(200) $1
(300) $5
(100) $25
(40) $100

This 800 chip breakdown will cover anything you could ever need, unless someday it starts playing really big.

My session also tend to run between 6-7 hour but occasionally we will have a long session that run up to 10-11 hour when all the degenerates just dowan the game to end.

So you might not use all the high value chips all the time but you gonna need them occasionally

That’s an awesome reply and very helpful. Being a one and done type of guy I’m probably going to start figuring on building the last, future-proof chip set.

My plan is yet to be fully determined but since I’ll build this over time it will likely be somewhat mixed and figure I wouldn’t start everyone’s hair on fire if I said I thought I might be trying to make the whole set, while mixed yet all the same within a denomination, Paulson THC’s

I’d like to build my set thru the PCF Classifieds.

Thanks for the help.
