Case for Transporting Chips (2 Viewers)

I agree it is an awesome find! Also, if you find yourself pawning stuff, then maybe poker chips should be the first thing you sell.

hi

i'm very interested by a pelican for my travel set but i don't know the case model that can take 1 deck of cards dealer and 100chips and be the smallest possible

Congratulations, I have never seen chips in a pawnshop that weren't dice chips in a fabulously crappy aluminum briefcase.

Thanks guys. I like to go into pawnshops just to see what they have. You are right, all I have ever seen in chips are crappy dice chips. When I walked in the first thing I saw from across the room were 312 spots. I said, "no way". Then I got close enough to see the mold. I had to get them. I'm a troller, I also once found a small set of Paulson solid hot stamped tourney chips from bally's Reno. Haven't found any of these chips since to make a nice set (261 chips). Those are my two great poker finds. Sorry about pic orientation, i can't fix it.

I have a small pelican case that I use for a device but I can't find it right now. I think that would probably be good for 100 chips & one deck. As soon as I find it I will send you the model number of the box.

love those bally's hotstamps! sure, it would be nice to find more, but you have enough for a great single table sit and go there. great find!

PokerPig, I love the Pelican 1520 case! That's a great design for it and another example of how versatile those types of cases are.

Meanwhile, I play in a game that requires me to take stuff. It's been a single table game until this month, when we had two tables. I had been carrying 400 chips, but with another table, I needed 600, and maybe even 800 if the game keeps growing. If it gets to 3 tables, I'm taking the Pelican, but for 600 I wanted a less bulky solution. Plus, I was concerned my gym bag wasn't sturdy enough for the additional chips.

So for Christmas, I got a 13x7x7 shooting range bag from Cheaper Than Dirt. It is very sturdy (much more so than the gym bag) will hold 800 chips in the 4x25 boxes, cards, timers, and dealer buttons. It's smaller than the gym bag, but still has plenty of room in it. It still has three side pockets I haven't put anything in for poker. For me, even better it can be emptied of poker equipment and filled with ammo and range supplies for when I go shooting.

With shipping, I paid around $32. I could have driven the 32 mile round trip to the nearest Cheaper Than Dirt and saved about half of that, but time this time of year is precious.

For years, I've thought a decent small range bag would be a good chip carrier. Now I know it will. Range bags are designed to hold ammo and firearms, which like poker chips are relatively heavy for their size. I'll post pics after Christmas when I see it again.

Has anyone tried using a rolling makeup case to carry/transport 1000+ chips? My worry with one of those is the bottom falling out or something due to too much weight. Some of them look pretty sturdy though.

I've been looking at wooden toolboxes. As toolboxes, they're built to handle the weight, and have good handles. But the drawers tend to be the wrong size for racks.

I'd love something with an appearance like this, but the internal sizes are goofy for chip racks:

I have a 2,000 chips rolling case for when I host big tournaments out of my house. I can't seat more than 30 people and that is tight. I worked hard to build a set of cheap vintage chips that wouldn't break my heart {much} if someone pocketed a few.

The rolling case is the only way to go for anything more than 1,000 chips. Even 1,000 chips in a birdcage or other case is really heavy and prone to mishaps.

Finally! I promised several weeks ago to post pics of my Bulldog range bag that I can carry chips in. This bag can hold up to 800 chips in 4x25 boxes, plus cards, dealer buttons, and timers. It is easy to carry and fairly compact for what it does carry. It's very sturdy and the handles are comfortable to carry. It has two front pockets that I can put dealer buttons, timers, and a small flashlight in. It has larger pockets on either end that I haven't yet figured out a poker use for. For shooting they can hold earmuffs.

This is a great bag for the purpose I got it for.

I just use three birdcages when transporting my chips. I haul my tables and chips around in a trailer so it's usually easy to get around but a nice rolling cart would be very handy. I might consider building one for myself when/if I have some down time.

T, that's a lot of chips to have to haul. Sounds like you need a trailer. There are commercial grade carts available if you didn't want to build your own, but maybe building your own is something you could do. I don't have those skills. :)

I'm curious what you do. It seems that either you provide the stuff for a really big game, or you do that in several big venues. Regardless, I suspect you might provide us tips on best carry and transporting methods. I've never had to take more than 1200 chips anywhere.

I do poker table rentals for events, so I've got a stash of 15 poker tables, 80 chairs, 2800 tournament chips plus the cards, buttons, seating cards etc. I've got the transportation down to 3 birdcages, 2 medium sized plastic totes and a duffle bag, plus all the tables and chairs.

Those are pretty cool, and not a bad price for a good hard case. I know folks who'd like them for video equipment & lenses and such...

Gold, you might want to talk to those who have those cases before buying. I've not seen one, but some have complained they aren't that great. Maybe some really like them and I've only seen the negative reviews.

I actually thought I remember those cases getting great reviews. I don't have one (yet) but i could be wrong. I also thought I read that you can alter the card area for another rack so it would hold 600?

There are two types of 500-chip Claysmith cases. One holds five racks (front-to-back), along with space for two decks of cards and two dealer buttons (on the right side of the case). It is large enough to be modified to hold six racks and still fit two stacked decks of cards. The newer style has a smaller footprint and holds five racks (left-to-right), with space for a deck of cards and one dealer button.

I have two of the larger original cases, and a friend has two of the smaller footprint versions (purchased shortly after they were made available). We are both very pleased with all four cases (which arrived intact with no damage), and have experienced no breakage or quality issues. I ordered mine from Claysmith on eBay ($46 shipped), and his were part of a Milano chip set order, direct from Claysmith's web site. There were several other positive reviews/comments also posted about the cases received around that same time.

However, some posters making more recent purchases have complained about receiving damaged cases, with broken or bent hinges, bent/missing rivets, defective handles, and a slew of other problems. It's not been made clear online (at least to me) which case version was involved, or if it made no difference which case was received. But clearly something has changed with either production or shipping practices, or both.

I'm thinking of straying from birdcages for my chips which I transport frequently. I have a few different birdcage types, most of them are the cheaper quality so they've chipped and cracked on me from being moved so much. Just this weekend I had one completely break where the black vertical piece broke in half. Fortunately the carrier was on the floor so chips didn't spill out.

I would prefer to get a case with two handles on the sides rather than one central handle. I'd rather not get a claysmith or pelican case as they're too expensive since I need like... 5 of them.

I was thinking some plastic tote bins may be a temporary solution to carry around the chips. Unfortunately most of them have sides which are angled so chips can move around too much inside. I'm going to pad the sides with foam for now until I find something better.

I've been thinking of making some trays out of wood. A 1000 capacity tray with some grooves milled in it and two handles on the sides. Nothing fancy, just cut from regular lumber. Here's my initial design. I would want to make them stackable, but I don't think I would stack more than 2 when carrying them so that I don't give myself a hernia.

To sorta steal an idea from Tex Rex, you might consider getting several large 500-chip acrylic trays with covers, and just put two or three (or four) in a gym-type canvas tote bag (with handles and/or carry strap).

That would work, but may be awkward to carry in a gym bag. BG, where do you get trays like that?

I've seen some locking trays made of metal with clear tops ranging from about $79-230 and hold up to 720 chips. I've always liked the idea, but by the time you buy enough for my chips, a Pelican (or similar) case is cheaper. They do appear to be really nice though.

Case in the top pic can usually be found on eBay or from several online poker-related web sites (it may even be a Trademark product; don't remember). The lower pic case (much nicer with hinged locking top, available in 500 or 600 chip capacity) is harder to find retail -- usually sold only by casino suppliers.

I really like that 2nd case with the lid. I'll have to check around to see where they're sold if I can.

In the meantime, I decided to throw some cheap lumber on the CNC to mill some grooves for some quick chip trays. These are super basic and prototypes, but I think they'll serve me well while running tournaments. These were pretty simple to make so I think I may just make a bunch more of the bigger trays and put some latches on them so that I can stack them and prevent chips from spilling out.

I think you've got the makings of a salable product, there...

I can tell, because stackable, with some latches, I'm on the verge of wanting to buy...

When you have mad woodworking skillz - and the super-cool tools, I cannot think of anything beter than T_Chan chip trays.

I imagine a fully loaded 1000 chip tray made of wood gets crazy heavy though.

Get a friend so you can carry them in together... like pallbearers, and have the players bow before the chips.

I'm looking at some of these for my woodworking tools and such and think one of the sizes would make a great travel case.

They're not popular here in the US but some of you Europeans might be familiar with them.

They make them for Festool as well.
