I went ahead and booked the Kitchener Inn & Suites. Still need to book flights. Did a quick look and all arrivals for us are late evening, even after looking at multiple departure cities.

It’s looking to me like Dallas to Detroit is my best option. I haven’t booked anything yet but plan to in the next few days.

I'm booked, arriving Detroit at 1356 on October 12. Departing 1211 on October 15 (which may make for an early start Sunday morning).
I'm waiting on lodging until I talk to my daughter who manages a local Hilton property to see what rates she can get for me.

We will be flying into Buffalo on the 11th, arriving late (after 8pm). So we are planning to drive directly to Cambridge that evening, and get a decent night’s sleep. Made sure our rental car allows going to/from Canada. Looking forward to trying curling! We are also gonna stay an extra day or two to explore Toronto since we have not yet been there. Will look to Moose and Fran for some tips!

Well - I am not sure, but I looked at a few cars on Expedia, and one of them specifically said it was fine to do so. I rented from Budget (through Expedia). Here is what it says:

I also rented from Budget. My research goes right along with the above. Tell them at the rental desk that you are going into Canada.

FWIW I would also rent with a card that provides rental car insurance if you have one.
