Hey everyone, I was looking for some guidance on which direction I should take. I’ve been starting the process of making my own chip set. I’ve looked into blanks as I don’t think I’m at the stage of getting a fully customized set as I wouldn’t use them to the point in justifying the price. I have had an inlay design created and wanted to have everyone give and tips and ideas of what should I do. Should I drop the project and get a premade set already like the Panda KGB, Mirage, Dunes of Arrakkis? Should I go ahead and get inlays printed and put them on blanks and if so how do you decide what colors you should go with. Any help would be appreciated

It really depends on your budget.

Tinas can be full custom for cheap, though they are ceramic, which is at the bottom of my tolerable list (yes, below China Clay). CC relabels or blanks are also inexpensive with custom Gear labels. Relabeling old casino chips is a more pricy option, and for slightly more you can get simple spot pattern CPCs. Getting even more expensive are minty Paulsons which can be over-labeled or murdered, or the Full-blown CPC route without the simple spot pattern restriction.

I do like your label design, but you will want to know the chip base before really settling on the denom color.

I forgot to mention that I'm looking at a set of 400-500 chips. I don't play a ton of games but what the option to have my own chips if when the time arises. Budget realistically would be in the $600-$750 range.

As with any inlay design, you are usually dealing with a 1" circle. Keep that in mind as your design looks fine enlarged, but on the chips some of the design elements are just too small. Good Luck with your project.

Why 400-500 why not 300 or 600?

No real reason and definitely not opposed to doing 300 or 600. Still kind of learning everything and seeing what a good number/design/price would be.

This is a good place for "how many" as well ...of course the first answer is always "more".

With that budget the group buy and tina hybrids is probably your best option.

Pro tip - center the numbers alone, and make the dollar/cent signs a smaller font and off to the side.

Is this a little better? Any more ideas I can switch up a little? Appreciate the tips.

I like to print out my labels, at actual size. You will be surprised at how big text needs to be to be legible. As a general rule, If I want it to be legible, it needs to be 0.07" or larger and contrasting. I arrived at that size by using actual casino chips and measuring the smallest text that I found readable, so your vision may vary.

In your image, "Boody" on the water tower won't be clear, as green and yellow are very close. As a town feature, everybody probably knows what it says, but if you move away your players will only see a blur.

If you are going custom ceramic, you can get away with more detail as you are not restricted to a 1" (or less) canvas as you can utilize the entire chip face.

I can definitely see what you are saying just by looking at the thumbnails. As much as I love the logo I think a complete rework is in order. Need to find a good designer that could work with me and go from there cause at this time I don't even know what color edge spots would look good. Back to the drawing board.

If going with Tina, then an option is going full chip with edge spot sublimation either on no mold chips, house mold, etc

Interested to see if you have made any progress on your design? Loved the idea of incorporating the water tower.

Good luck!

I'm kind of at a standstill. Just confused on where to go from here. I think it might be time to look for a designer to clean it up. It does seem too busy of an inlay but then I've seen some other customs and I question myself again.

From where I’m sitting, it sounds like you’re right and it might be the perfect time to bring in a designer. Because the concept and label are great and now all you need is someone to finish it up and get it ready to print.

I was also wondering, are you sticking with the same Chip colors and edge spots or did that change over time?

I think you're right otherwise it'll be a constant battle of should I or shouldn't I.

I originally picked the chip colors because I wasn't sure how the process worked. They were available blanks in the group buys and I figured I'd have to choose them that way and have labels printed. Learning the process a little more I am now undecided on what colors and edge spots to get because I didn't understand that there are so many more options.

Right, it is wild that you have access to basically any style or design that you can think of.

I’m definitely interested to see what changes a designer would make, because some people just have a great eye. Also I wonder how much of an impact your selection of chip will inevitably have on the final label design.

Happen to know of any good designers on here that I should ask to see if they have any availability currently?

I've gotten ahold of a designer but he is going to be tied up for a bit with something way more important! He has given pretty good advise and I'm working through it all trying to figure out the best direction to go or to find another designer and start over.

I am completely illiterate when it comes to photoshop/illustrator. It's my teen sons department. I'll have to wait until he has a free minute or two to make some changes. Right now I'm debating turning down/muting the colors a little. Getting rid of the squiggles above Henny's, making the Boody, IL bigger, and making the water tower color darker green with no yellow behind it to be able to possibly be legible. I'll see where those changes will get me and go from there.

Finally had some time to make a few updates and would appreciate any feedback. Nothing major just small tweaks that I think overall might help the look and legibility of the artwork.

The water tower is still unreadable, and I'm a little concerned that the roosters' combs disappear into the barn.

You do you, but I would:
  • Left rooster more to the left, so his comb is aligned with the black line separating the aces
  • Right rooster to the right, so his comb is aligned with the black line separating the aces
  • Change the Ace of spades to diamonds and vice versa (so the rooster isn't lost in the spade)
  • Alternately, make the right rooster white
  • Consider changing the heart to a club. It might not be necessary after moving the left rooster, but as it currently stands, Mrs Zombie thought the heart was the rooster's comb (you see it now too, don't you).

I like the darker contrast, especially if you are going with a brighter set of chips.

I think @Poker Zombie gave some great feedback, and it has got be thinking that it might be good to print them out to actual size and test the legibility.
