Oh boy, I know this is going to be an interesting topic. I know how heated some folks get over the issue of murdered chips, but even more furious over selling them.

I assume finding prices to racks of chips is just like any other market; look up the last sold rack of the item and go from there to dictate market price.
How do people evaluate chips that have been murdered though? Do people charge more or less for the labor? Are they sold as damaged? The same as a normal rack?

I have been considering letting go of a chunk of my project chips that I haven't gotten to labeling yet and just want to offer them at fair prices without stepping on anyone's toes and be as fair as possible.

For those of you that do such things, what is the general consensus?
The point of this post I guess is that I want to respect the marketplace and buy/sell/trade culture we have here as much as I can.
Are there any social norms I should know about with this subject in particular?

I'm sure it'll get asked eventually but,
TLDR; I got hit with a huge medical bill that gut-checked the heck out of me and I'm selling off a chunk of my hobby stuff to make up for some of it.

Are they starbursts. If so, let me know :)

Sorry to hear about the bills…

Usually murdered chips seem to go for less by the rack, but a full set murdered just looking for labels I have seen go for very strong prices.

i would say far less than half. work will need to be done if a murder has been committed. labels removed. labels made. application, ordering new labels, shipping costs. yada yada just bury them in a shallow grave and try to forget about the crime

It all depends on the specific chips obviously. In general murdered chips would have a smaller market but essentially the same value to those people. Potentially slightly more because the work is already done.
^^ This.

I may be 'captain obvious' here, but if someone is looking for specific chips to label, or if your chips meet a need for someone to label, then the already prepped chips (with inlays removed) may be worth more to them.

If the chips you're trying to sell go fit in well as denoms that aren't readily available (i.e. cash denoms of $0.25 or $20.00, maybe tourney denoms of T1000, T5000, T25,000, etc.) then the chips might be worth more to the buyer with inlays already removed.

On the flip side, if someone is looking for the original chips you're trying to sell in original condition, then the chips may be worth less. For example, if you've got a common rack of red RHC chips that used to be $5 chips, that might not fit very well in some sets to relabel -- people might be looking for a chip color that would work as a $0.25 chip -- so it might be a harder sell.

I'm sure this won't be surprising to anyone who has seen any of my sets, but I would value murdered chips I am interested in far more than non-murdered chips. It is tedious and time consuming to murder chips, and most of my sets get relabeled, so if someone else has already done that work for me, that adds value.

They’re worth whatever somebody is willing to pay. I know it sounds like a copout but that’s the truth. I wouldn’t pay a nickel for murdered chips unless the dining room table needed leveling. But there’s somebody out there who would appreciate not having to murder them themselves, and would pay more for it.

I think you can draw a good parallel to cleaned chips vs dirty chips. Although there’s always somebody who wants to charge a fee to clean the chips before they ship them, there are very few people who take them up on the offer.
To those of us who know what chips are worth, they’re worth what they’re worth.

Overall, I would say the value is largely unchanged (for most chips). Some people will be less interested because the chips were murdered, while people looking to relabel will add some value due to the work already being done.

If it has Blaze, Arc, or some flair.... Up 20% and drop as you go. If it's just general stuff, down 20% and drop as you go.

I mean, sometimes it's a treat when looking for a filler for a set. I wanted happy knight 10s for my set, found a rack premurdered for way less then new. And the work was done for me.

It depends on the Chip and it depends on how long you want to wait to sell.

Vintage chips from famous casinos obviously lose most of their value when murdered.

For some chips it’s a plus because the label is worthless and people just buy them to relabel. But if you want to get a premium (much less a $1/chip premium or whatever the going rate is) you have to be prepared to wait for the right buyer.

Yup. I've seen AS Milled HS chips go for premiums, and milled solids going for half they would have with some stupid initials like RJW on them. It can vary hard on a case by case basis.

Interesting about the milled (hotstamped) chips being sold for less; I'd think the opposite would be true. There have been so many times I was interested in chips that happened to be monogrammed and I'd pay a little bit of a premium on their price if they were already milled because to use them I'd need to pay 50 cents per chip or whatever to get them milled and usable to me.

Well, some pay because if you get the wrong sized stamp, foil will be a bitch. Some want leaded, or a certain condition. Some actually are looking for the damn RJW. This hobby is impossible to fully figure out....

I value the work that has been put into the murdering. Sure doing a barrel of easily removed NAGB IHC labels is all fun and games, but doing several complete racks of chips really sucks
