Buying chips in Australia - advice needed (1 Viewer)

Yea seems brutal. I'm growing really fond of the Tiki Kings (yet to check out some samples though) but scared to see what the total shipping cost would be especially if I grab some plaques as well.

Definitely see the appeal for group buys now.

The tiki kings are amazing!

I was going to suggest to check out:

1) brpropoker - based in the US so shipping hurts, but the quality is really second to none!

2) sunfly/apollonchips - based in china and offers free shipping if you are concerned about shipping costs.

3) the classifieds section on PCF - best bang for your buck, so what you save you can spend on shipping (I guess… haha).

Only issue atm is usps still isn’t shipping to Australia so you might have to use a reshipping service.

Best way to grab a samples of Tiki's through BR Pro I assume?

Thanks, will check out Sunfly/Apollon as well.

From what I can tell comparing the different variations on Apollon's website with Jack's website we have:

Polychrom chips: https://www.apollonchips.com/polychrom

I see the Lucky Dragon's which I assume are the same as these: https://www.jackspoker.com.au/lucky-dragon-full-range

Polyinno chips: https://www.apollonchips.com/polyinno

Here we see The Ascona's also seen on Jack's: https://www.jackspoker.com.au/the-ascona-exclusive-full-range

So this would be the Mercury Macau range as well.

Polyclay chips: https://www.apollonchips.com/polyclay

I couldn't work out if Jack's had any of this range but it doesn't appear so.

Looks like pokershop stocks the Polyclay range though as I see the Sunfly's Ravenor Classic range:

I'll double check with Pokershop, just assumed they would be given the Sunfly logo in the background lol

Yes it looks like the cards mold (ravenor) chip from pokershop.com.au is much like the group buy from the US.

You can put any design on them. I don’t know the quality I haven’t had one in my hand. i have enquired about making my own design. Roughly $1 per ceramic chip with your own custom design (600 chip order) but that is a straight ceramic (not embossed/cards mold) he toled me the cards mold are a little more expensive

Here is the blank card mold photo he sent me

Ahh I see now, the Sunfly Polyclay's and Cards Mold from Tina are comparable but certainly different. Found a great write up from @TX_Golf_N_Poker comparing each chip: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/sunfly-polyclay-poker-chips.77029/#post-1566675

Still learning every day but feel like I've narrowed my scope down to the Sunfly Polyclays, Cards Molds and BR Pros. Now to get some samples :)
Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but there is serious talk about an Aus cards mold GB in this thread. I also think there are some sample chips making the rounds.

One thing I immediately noticed was JacksPoker have different grades of ceramics:
  • "Ceramic" - Port Royals/JPT - basically these have sharp edges are more "glossy". They also have slightly inconsistent/off-centre printing (maybe 1 in 10 chips)
  • "Luxury Ceramic" - Artemis Club/Mercury Macau - these feel really really nice and have soft/rounded edges (there's like a 0.01mm "break" between the face of the chip and the edges) with a matte finish.
  • "Casino Grade Ceramic" - Valentino/Lucky Dragon - or for the Americans here, these are the BrPro chips (I have a sample set of Tiki Kings) very similar to the luxury ceramic. The only difference I noticed was the edges are slightly more rounded with no "break". These are also the chips that Pokershop.com.au uses.
  • "Casino Hybrid Ceramic" - I didn't get a sample set of these.
I managed to order samples of all the Ceramics that Jacks has available for custom stes. Not sure if things changed but I believe the 'Luxury Ceramic' is the same as the 'Casino Hybrid Ceramic' in your description above. They call it the 'Luxury Hybrid Ceramic' - their description: "Luxury casino grade ceramic with laminated inlay" They feel smooth and almost slick, the inlays have a glossy feel that borders on glass or something more plasticky like acryclic. Still feels nice.

So they have
  • Value Ceramic - Port Royals/JPT
  • Premium Ceramic - Artemis Club
  • Luxury Hybrid Ceramic - The Ascona/Mercury Macau
The latter two have rounded and polished edges and are referred to as 'casino grade'. I find the Premium Ceramic, whilst it has rounded and polished edges, has a much rougher feeling texture on the face of the chips, whilst the Value Ceramic has no rounded and polished edges - yet somehow feel smoother on the face. Other than better edge alignment, I actually think the two higher end options don't feel or sound as nice as the Value Ceramic. Luckily for me - as that is what I'll likely buy a custom set of.

One interesting thing to note is the Venerati chips I got from ye old Sidepot poker site look and feel exactly like Jacks "Premium Ceramic'

Wish there was an easy way to compare with the Card Mold ceramics and other ceramic vendors mentioned here

I did reach out and apparently the 'Ravenor' Premium Classic range are the exact same product as the other Ceramic 10g chip sold at Pokershop. The only difference is the recessed edge pattern which is the reason for the extra cost. Not sure if they're Sunfly or Cards Mold or what though.

Hey mate, if you are planning on ordering the Ravenor, I would strongly advise you to go direct to Sunfly. They also offer free shipping if you meet the minimum order requirements.

Going through pokershop or a reseller doesn’t make sense as you will pay more also.

Yea I'd absolutely go through Sunfly directly, I just wanted to know if they are in fact the Sunfly variations of the 'Ravenor' that Pokershop sell. All I was told after reaching out though, was what I posted above.

rebelpoker.com.au has a few ceramics and composite clays for sale. They seem much cheaper than their Australian counterparts.

I probably should have looked at these instead of the port royals I purchased from jacks.

Nothing yet. I’m an incessant researcher! But I’m narrowing the field.

1. HSI Primary or secondary set. I think I prefer the secondary. Fracs are an issue.

2. Custom set from CPC. I have played around with the chip creator. Colours and edgespots seem easy for me to create (Couple of ideas stolen from other well known sets). But inlay design is a different story! I am close to “naming“ our poker group, and I have a motif/caricature in mind. But ive never done this before so I’m a little unsure.

@Newenne should be able to hook you up with a hsi secondary set.....

To be honest it’s a total fkn pain in the ass!

I should just buy those horrendous looking Aussie currency chips because my fellow degens probably won’t even notice the difference. But they don’t have a 25c chip! lol

I really like HSI sets also. I ordered both Primary and Secondary. In general the Secondaries are mint/unused and mine might stay that way or I might peel some off the large secondary set and replace some denominations of the primary set. Fracs are an issue indeed so I am going down the route of relabeling something else with Gear labels (one of the vendors on here)

CPC customs is something I'm intending to do too. It's about a 6 month wait on the Scrolls mold andaube another hear for the seemingly most popular Circle Square (CSQ) mold. The vendor David Spragg is a legend he has the fastest email turnaround time of any business I've dealt with, ever. Really patient with my million questions or too.

Can't wait to see what you end up with. Looking forward to having some more trading buddies down under :)

My only regrets so far have been passing up on great sets in the classifieds. And spending money on crappy chips (so many Monte Carlos). Lol.

I don’t mind the wait, I’m patient. I’m a fan of the jock and the horsehead mold. That’s because I love the gallops!
Nice another horsemen! I used to exercise ride/break and train TB's here in Ontario Canada. Was a showjumping rider first then broke bad into racing and loved it. Unfortunately fate decided racing was not to be my lifelong career, I broke my left leg twice at Woodbine in Toronto on the backside. Kicked in the shin while in company with another colt once, and some years later flipped over backwards and dragged down the road with my foot in the stirrup. I can tell you from the honest truth I am the only person I have ever known to have survived such a thing so I feel just a wee bit lucky. So, 2 metal rods later (the first was bent when I was dragged) I gained the ability to semi-predict the weather and had a second professional degree paid by "workers comp" So, win/win. I would gladly go by to the freedom and glory of going out at 530 in the morning with the first set to ride in the dark and sometimes take advantage of the same. The morning mist and fresh air while out on the main track was something I will revel in forever. If only I could be that "fit" again as well, I used to ride until it was dark or there was no more work for the day starting at the racetrack and moving on to various farms 7 days a week ~mid January to early december with no days off and were I to win the lottery i'd be back down doing the same but riding the Pony instead lol.

My chips were of course on the horse head mold. I went with "the sloth club" theme as a primary/secondary set one being CPC and the other "Anita's" cards mold. I looked closely at the Jockey mold and could have gone all out with "the limping jockey" But.... The jockey mold I can understand has its appeal but to me it looks like someone skiing more than a jockey with a whip, couldn't get past that so along with the cheaper price level Horse Heads won the day. The fine detail of the horse head mold is also very impressive. There is fine detail of the bridle etc well etched into every chip, plus they give an old time classy look unobtainable from most other chips.
