Hello,

I am new to the forum. I am looking to purchase a set which can be good for cash and tournaments. Currently, I don't own a set.

Any advice on a good starting set?

When I surf on the internet to look at the style of chips I like , I tend to gravitate on the Paulson style chips. But these are very expensive and extremely hard to find. Are there any other alternatives or should I look at building a set slowly?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome! NIce to see a fellow Canadian added on this site, generally speaking, you shouldnt use the same set for tournament and cash, for security reasons most people don't recommend it.

Yes Paulsons are very expensive, but there are lots of alternatives, you can do high end plastic chips (Bud Jones, Matsui, B&G, Abbiati), clay composites, ceramic, it just depends on what you like and what your preference towards designs and such.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to discuss more, and as everyone will tell you, samples are your best friend!

Welcome. Buy samples first. Have fun learning what you like.

Welcome! Be patient. There are a lot of different types/styles of chip available. Definitely spend some time here on PCF using the search function. Hang out, read, learn. As already mentioned, grab some samples so you can actually feel and see the chips in person. You may just be surprised by what you learn and find.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will go and check out some of those names out. One thing I know is that I definitely like the look of edge spots chips.

Welcome to the forum!
Try to get some, even loaner, samples from fellow Canadians to see how different chips look, feel and sound like first-hand.

Cash and tourney chips don't mix for game security reasons, but this can be disregarded if playing a single table game with very close friends or family. Or, having the Tournament (T) units cost the same to buy in as in cash.

Even so, no simultaneous or successive tourney and cash games should ever take place under the same roof on a given evening (honest mistakes cannot be ruled out).

Welcome!

Some casino-used Paulsons can be had for well under $1 ea. For instance: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/horseshoe-southern-indiana-sale-thread.62028/

There are still used 1’s, 5’s, and 25’s available for purchase.

For tournament sets, sometimes hotstamped solids (Paulson, CPC, or BCC) can be had for under $1 ea as well.

My advice:
  1. Take your time
  2. Get samples
  3. Maximize your budget by choosing efficient breakdowns
  4. Get separate sets for cash and tourney for security and flexibility.

Thank you Beakertwang!
I will check out the link.

Thanks for the link wolfpack.
I just looked at the chips and although it's a good price, it's not the look I am looking for. Much appreciated though :)

Thanks for the tip allforcharity.
Sorry. But I don't know how to do that.
Can you or someone point me I the right direction? Thanks
