Sorry for the newb question. Looking to get the 1000-chip carrier to hold 10 racks. If, in the future, I’d like to have my chips in a cabinet and not use the carrier, is it possible to purchase just the covers or is the only option to buy the racks with the covers already?

Most chip racks don’t have covers, only Matsui I believe

Not if vendors here sell them, but Amazon.

To understand your question, we'll need to clarify the definitions.

By 1000-chip carrier, I'm guessing you mean an acrylic birdcage with 2 parts, the black base/handle, and the transparent "cube" cover.

By rack, we mean an acrylic tray designed to hold 100 chips in 5 barrels of 20. Most racks available from manufacturers are "open face". Some racks are designed to be fully covered, like Bud Jones trays and some Matsui covered racks. Some racks will fit in standard birdcages, and some will not.

If you're going to store your chips in a cabinet and not use the birdcage, then you can just stack the racks on top of each other. It doesn't matter whether the individual racks have covers or not. The open-face racks stack in your cabinet just as well as they stack in the birdcage. Some people prefer to use the covered racks for storage because there's no direct pressure on the chips themselves from above.

If you stack open face racks, try to use racks that snugly fit your chips, and try to fill the barrels before stacking to even distribute the weight around. Casinos regularly store their chips several racks high for months and years without damage, because their racks are filled to capacity. Covered racks will stack fine even with partially filled barrels (they are generally a looser fit, anyway).

Hi guys. Thanks and yes I was a bit vague with my inquiry.

I was looking at the bird cage style; not the acrylic one but the one from Versa games:

Racks - yes, the 100-chip ones that are held inside this case. I had seen some acrylic racks that are sold with covers.

I'm familiar with how the racks stack nicely in the casino. I just wasn't sure what you guys recommend in terms of storage. From what you are saying @allforcharity it seems to be fine to keep the uncovered racks without any long term damage to the chips if kept for a long period of time.

I guess a follow up to what you asked - there are some acrylic racks that do not fit the birdcage? I'd be interested in storing 39mm chips, not the 43mm.

Ah, I understand now.

The racks with covers that you linked to (I think) are not meant for stacking, and I doubt you'd get 10 of those in your Versa case. Your best bet is to get regular, well-fitting open racks that will stack well with full barrels of chips. I think the covered racks by Matsui or stacked Bud Jones covered trays will fit in that Versa case, but you'd better get confirmation from someone here who has the case in question.

Some 43mm racks do not fit in a standard-size birdcage. The covered Matsui racks do fit (and they also hold 43mm chips). Racks for 39mm chips should fit fine.

I have those covers and you can stack them, 3 or 4 high....but they’re not very stable. Since the tops do not really interlock with the bottoms of racks, they can move a bit without much effort. Ok on a shelf, but I wouldn’t trust them like that in a carrier (if they fit, likely not).
Also, the racks must be matching, meaning you need to use the ones that came with the tops for the covers to be snug. Paulson or Chipco racks are a bit smaller and the covers are quite loose.
