Does anyone have any tips for cleaning 1200 Chipco? I know I can use dish soap and water to clean without any negative effects, but I'm hoping there's a pre-treatment that I can use to make the process faster.

Will OxyClean work, or does it risk fading the colors? Any secrets to be shared?

I tried oxy on chipcos once and I very much did NOT like the result on the red 5's. Cheapest and not that long for me was damp magic eraser a few sec on each side. It is coarse enough to clean it quickly but does not damage the chip.

The red ink on most Chipco ceramics isn't very stable, and has a tendency to run and transfer to other chips - even transfers to table felt or to your hands. Doesn't surprise me that Oxi-Clean would cause fading on red chips, and it wouldn't surprise me that plain old dish soap (like Dawn) would do it too, to some degree.

I have a thousand chipco's that I bought from @Psypher1000 . I was also trying to think of a good way to clean them. I only have the whites and greens. Not interested in using an ultra sonic cleaner on them.

Maybe I'll try a sample size in soap and dishwater. If I'm not satisfied with that I'll look into the magic marker.

Any other suggestions?

@MacGrad have you tried anything yet?

For the record I never tested Oxi on other color ceramics it just so happens red was what I did first and then stopped because of noticeable fade.

When my chips come in I'll post up some results after trying a couple cleaning methods.
Going to try the light magic eraser & water first, mild soap, then oxyClean if all else fails.

Current process is as follows:

* Dirty Chipcos presoak in a warm / hot water bath with some Oxi Clean powder
* Hand cleaning with soft dish sponge / fingertips to remove any stubborn gunk
* Rinse in cold water bath to remove any remaining Oxi mixture

Doesn't seem to have had a negative impact on the chips yet, BUT (!!!) I have only done this on the used $0.25 Condado Plaza chips that already have some fading to the faces. Have not tried it on the new $1s (whites with non-faded graphics) or the new $10s.

I will be testing on one of each to ensure no damage / color bleed occurs on the new chips.

I can't help but ask, why clean new chips?

At some point, they're going to get dirty from use and need to be cleaned -- and it won't be an easy job to separate the "new" $1s from the "used". Therefore, I figure it's best to find out now if there's an issue with the cleaning methods before they get mixed together, and to find out whether the $10s would need to be handled differently from the rest of the chips.

(These will eventually be raffled off / used as a prize within my friendly poker group, so any info I'll be able to provide the non-"chip literate" winner will be helpful.)

Bumping this old thread...

Is there a suggested mild soap? Not sure if I should use some dish soap or a magic eraser. Sounds like Oxi clean isn't a good idea.

I have around 900 HSI WSOP Chipco's that I need to clean.

I have started cleaning some the HSI tourney Chipcos, i have been just using hot water and a little bit of dawn dish soap and just using a soft terry cloth. Letting them soak in the water for about 5 mins then pulling them out and wiping off with the terry cloth. Seems to be doing the trick for me

That's pretty much what I was planning. Maybe a sponge to get some of the thicker HJ spots.

For those more gunky places, i have just been using a dish sponge, one with the harder side and then the normal sponge on the other. Takes a little bit longer and some elbow grease, but seems to do the job just fine in my opinion compared to getting a USC out and having to deal with that

Yeah, exactly. Use the rough part for the thicker scum.

So ultrasonic cleaning chip is is not recommended? Does it damage them?

I ended up using warm water and a dish sponge. If they weren't visibly dirty, I would use the soft side of the sponge. Visible dirt and HJ spots, I would use the coarse side. I was able to clean them pretty quickly that way.

I see a few sellers mentioning their used chips are ultrasonic cleaned, and beside this thread I've also read in a few other threads about NOT using ultrasonic to clean. I was reading the other thead "Ultrasonic cleaning" and in there, someone mentioned a recent "accident".

Is heat damage the main issue why folks in this thread is not recommending ultrasonic cleaners?

If you look around, you will see that the type of chip is what matters.
There are recommended methods of cleaning for each.

Typically "normal" Paulson chips are fine in an ultrasonic cleaner. Ultrasonic can damage hot stamped Paulsons.

What chips do you want to clean?

Yes you can damage your chips in an ultrasonic, I have only cleaned Paulsons so far, I have found that 42celcius and lower is safe to avoid warping and I use a mix of tap water, a blue dish soap and course salt for a run time of max 60seconds per chip. 20-30 seconds then brush with a tooth brush to loosen dirt then shake another 20-30 seconds and rinse. All but the most filthy chips can be cleaned this way. Shaking the chips for a prolonged periods/chem use can result in material/colour loss on your chips.
