I'm looking to build a tournament set for up to 18 people.

I usually run 5000 or 10000 starting stacks.

I'd prefer 25, 100, 500, 1000, 5000 and maybe 25000.

Any idea on what type of breakdown I'd need and how many chips would be ideal?

TYIA!

Lots of threads on this, so you might want to search around.

are you planning on Rebuys? Add-ons?
Do you want minimum number of chips, or lots of chips.

I believe many people prefer 1 of 2 main breakdowns: (25/100/500/1000).
8/8/6/6, or the 12/12/5/6

For the basics, and 18 People, you could do 150/150/100/200. 200 x 1K chips covers the starting stacks. If you want 5k's, go for it, but they aren't needed.

edit:
Fixed a bad OCD breakdown.
also if, you do the 12/12 breakdown, you can go 250/250/100/200 for 800 chips. You could also substitute 20 1k chips for 5k chips, and get the same breakdown.

Until you run either bigger stacks or many more players, you won't need a 25k chip.

Lots of great info if you dig a bit, but basically...

Most efficient for 10k:
Starting stack 8/8/4/7
Totals:144/144/80/140/20 for 522 total. Fill out barrels/racks as you please.

Better option:
Starting stack 12/12/5/6
Totals: 216/216/100/120/20 for 632 total. Again, fill out barrels/racks as you see fit.

Both will get the job done, both include plenty for color ups and rebuys. If you want to make the sets good for 20 players, go 160/160/100/160/20 for 600 total, or 240/240/120/140/20 for 760 total.

25K chips really aren’t necessary for 2-table 10K tourneys, but I wouldn’t blame you for wanting a few. :)

If you’re OCD about full barrels and racks, you could go with 200/200/100/160/40. Give half the players 8/8/4/7 stacks, and half 12/12/5/6. But that might set off a different type of OCD.

I'd keep the 25's to a minimum as they are the first chips off the table and you would not use them in a rebuy. T25000's are not needed at all. Maybe get a barrel of 5000's to use as rebuy chips.

8/13/7 T5000 or 8/13/7/5 for T10000 so with some spares, 160/240/140/140/20 for 700 chips
or can lower the starting stacks of 100's and use more 1ks and get the total down to 600 chips

Our monthly game is a STT with 10k starting stacks and a max of 2 rebuys per person. I have tried many starting stack breakdowns but the one that works best for me is 12/17/4/6 (T25/T100/T500/T1000). Subsequent rebuys will be 0/10/0/9 until I run out of hundreds then 0/0/0/10 and finally just two T5k chips. Part of this is because I love the yellow T1k so like to have two racks of those on the table :)

You need to decide how many rebuys you will offer and that will help determine the chips required. Over two tables, perhaps 8/8/4/7 starting will work OK. A nice easy 1000 chip set is 200/200/100/200/200/100 which gives you full racks of each denom making life easy for access and storage. Both my 1000 chip tourney sets have that breakdown.

I like (T25/100/500/1K/5K) 220/220/120/200/20 = 800 chips.

This gives you 18 stacks of 12/12/5/6 or 27 stacks of 8/8/4/7 with extra 1k chips for color ups, and 5k chips for 10 extra rebuys. (Add more if needed.)

I don't think T25K s are necessary unless we are talking 4-5 tables tbh.

How would you scale down if it was only 12 people?

Pretty much the same way.

Count 8/8/4/7 + 1 1k (for color up on T25/T100) for the bare minimum
* 12 yields
96/96/48/96
Round to 100/100/50/100 plus 50 T5k for rebuys/deep stacks, 400 chip set

Or count 12/12/5/6 + 1.5 1k (for color up) for a deeper stack
* 12 yields
144/144/60/90
Round to 150/150/75/100 plus 25 T5k for a 500 chip set.

Ok, so I have 1300 blank super diamond chips with the following (horrendous, I know) breakdown:

500 green
400 black
250 purple
100 yellow
50 orange

I'm looking to bring 500 chips on my trip next week. Starting stacks will vary from 3,000 to 10,000. All tournaments will be freezeouts with a max of 10 people. Is this possible pulling from the breakdown above and if so, how would you break it down? Thanks in advance!

12/12/5/6 * 10 covers everything.

120 green, 120 black, 50 purple, 100 yellow (extra for color ups), 50 orange = 440 chips. 60 to spare

Think about 15 * 8/8/6/6 to determine how to use up the extras

125 green, 125 black, 100 purple, 100 yellow (extra for color ups), 50 orange. = 500 chips

Builds in a few extras for each chip but covers 10 stacks comfortably.

I think the second option is the the way to go.

That's the way I went for my 2-table T20K tourney set :

Half of the players with 8/8/4/7/2 and the other half with 12/12/5/11/1.

I've a total of 720 chips (incl. extras T1K and T5K for color-up).
