I’ve been researching everything I can to find a set that’ll satisfy what I’m looking for
  • Denoms: .25, 1, 5 ($ or no $ ok)
  • Enjoyable colors, especially the .25 as that’ll be the bulk ($20 games most common)
    • $.25 pink, orange, green
    • $1 white
    • $5 red
  • Feel. I like clay, chalkier the better.
  • Budget: $1/chip or less
  • Prefer dual color edge spots adjacent to each other, rectangles as opposed to triangles
I’ve considered the following
  • Milanos - I don’t like the brown $.25 chips. I like the feel even tho they’re china clays
  • Majestics - love the colors in the images, ok dual color edge spots. I don’t like the price hike as they used to be $.16/chip but now $.42/chip
  • Apache Casino Royals - love the colors in the images and price ($.16/chip). Waiting on samples, concerned about feel
    • $.25 orange
    • $1 white
    • $5 red
  • Spirit molds & custom labels - haven’t used them, I hear they’re terrible and fragile. I’d imagine they feel great tho. Super cheap, $.05 /chip + $.20 custom gear labels.
  • Chiplab - love the customization, ordered samples. Some clays have really sharp edges, but others are nice and smooth. I hope the smooth edge samples are consistent for that mold. Feel is ok. Kinda pricey IMO $.85-$1 /chip
  • CPC Customs - I wish but too expensive. I’d pay maybe up to $1.50/chip for CPC quality. Dream set would be Rounders with custom quarters
  • Paulsons - can’t find $.25 denoms or many sets in my price range
  • Apache Bank - don’t like the orange/black $.25. Don’t like the edge spots
  • Poker Knights - don’t like the dark dull colors, metal slugs, and sharp edges
Any advice is welcomed.

If it's Paulson you want..

Give the Horseshoe casino used sets a try. They pop up often enough. Fit your $1/chip budget pretty much. They are great chips! Worth considering, as they weren't on your list.

I second the recommendation for relabeled Milanos, given what you've said. Get a custom design on a great-looking chip and pick any color you want for the quarter. Personally, I think the blue $50, grey 50c, or even black $100 would be interesting and fun as the quarter to go with the white and red $1 and $5. But if you relabel you can rearrange the color scheme any way you want. Consider pink, black, grey, white for 25c, $1, $5, $25 ! Go crazy, baby! Just make sure your new label design makes the denominations really, really obvious or you'll confuse the f* out of your players. :D

At any rate the Milanos have a pink $5,000, an orange $10,000, and green $25 that you could choose from to relabel as your quarters, given that you said those were your preferred colors.

Spirit molds & custom labels - haven’t used them, I hear they’re terrible and fragile. I’d imagine they feel great tho. Super cheap, $.05 /chip + $.20 custom gear labels.

Where are you finding Spirit molds for five cents? I just paid seven to thirteen cents each... I'll probably be buying more and would love to save a few pennies, so please let me know. :)

Nexgen Progen 80 chips were China Clays that came in the same colors as the Spirit molds, which in turn are copies of the colors from Paulson home sets such as Pharaohs' and Classics. I don't think you can find any at retail any more, but if you post a Wanted ad in the classifieds, a PCF member might find some they could sell you. The colors look like this, so I think that would meet your approval (dual-color adjacent rectangular edge spots):

I got this image at Ultimate Poker Supplies. You can purportedly order some there, but I don't know if that web page is current and correct: https://www.ultimatepokersupplies.c...lity-customized-poker-chips-105g-pr-1809.html

The same spot colors are also available in an older China Clay made by PGI using the medium greek key mold - similar to the medium greek key mold used by the Progen 80s above, but the two are slightly different. The PGI MGK China Clays are more clay-like than the Progen 80 MGK China Clays. Probably the PCF classifieds are the only way to get either of them.

Getting chips that feel like chalky clays and look like spotted clays for under a buck will be difficult. The modern China Clays (Milanos, etc) don't really feel that much like Paulsons, IMO. The Spirit molds kinda do, and I've read that the other older China Clays do as well, but they're all hard to get hold of. The Chiplab clays kinda do, but they definitely don't quite feel right, and as you noted are pretty pricy for what they are. Anything else - especially the Claysmith slugged chips like Poker Knights and The Bank The Mint and so forth - just don't feel much like clay chips at all, in my opinion.

Heck, even modern Paulsons don't have the same feel as older leaded Paulsons, and new chips don't have the same feel as the very same chips that have been worn in for a while. Feel is subjective; there's a wide range, and lots of fine shades between similar chips. You have to feel them for yourself and decide if you like 'em or not. I've liked almost every chip I've put my hands on, even though they're all very, very different from each other.

If you're okay with the way ceramics feel, you can get them to look like anything you want, fake edge spots and all. They don't feel like clays, but they feel good. Casino-grade plastics like Bud Jones feel even less like clays, and don't even look anything like them - they have their own design aesthetic. But they're high-quality chips nonetheless, and if you like them at all you'll probably love them.

Good luck on your journey!

My suggestions for .25//1/5 at $1 or less are primarily to scour the classifieds section for some used real clay chips...
  • A used CPC set from the classifieds. You will just need to be patient and watch
  • Paulson real casino set from the classifieds like Horseshoe, Aransas Queen, Roadhouse etc.
  • Build a mixed set of used Paulsons from the classifieds over time
But for off the shelf chips I would shoot for
  • Dia De Los Muertos from BR Pro Poker or ABC Gifts and Awards
  • Majestic China clays (not compression clay) from Apache

It's no secret (well, it shouldn't be) that Chiplab clays are injection molded slugged plastic. They still feel kind-of like clays, moreso (imho) than Milanos do.

The metal slug makes them clink slightly.

The OP has samples and can judge for himself.

Or, you could use a set that has $1, $5 and $25 chips....but use the $25 as the quarter. It may sound strange, but it will take you and your buddies only half a second to adjust.

This is a test point. This opens up more options for real Paulsons around the $1/chip range since fracs are usually difficult and pricey unless customized.

Used 39mm Paulson RHCs and 43mm Sun-Fly HB005 hybrids are your best bet for nice 10g chips with decent friction and clay-like feel and sound for less than $1/chip. And neither will be slippery, disintegrate, or have dimensional irregularities (varying diameters and thickness) like china clays.

As well, there really is an off-putting smell that literally made me sell my own set of Milanos. I tried airing. I tried washing, repeatedly, and the smell persisted.

Everyone responds to these things differently, but if you dislike the smell of old unwashed socks soaked in sweat, then DON'T get Milanos.

The Chip Room will be having a sale soon for Paulson chips which will include a 25c chip. The $1 and $5 used chips will most likely be under $1 each. The frac most likely will be more but the average cost will probably be close to $1 each.
Definitely interested. Any info/pics we can get ahead of time?

I can do a Bud Jones (high end plastic) chip set for WAY less than $1 per chip. Feel free to PM me if you are interested. Free samples for evaluation are available, also.
I've seen videos on them but haven't had any samples. I hear they are great and feel like a hard rubber rather than clay. I'll ping ya if I go that route

Lol. Chalky and $1/chip

Edit: none of the chips listed are actual clay
I listed paulsons, cpc, spirit molds. I'm still learning, are these not clay?

I just pulled the cheapest price from https://www.chipsandgames.com/discountpokerchips.aspx. Looks like the $.05 ones were clay composites, my bad. The ones I'd actually consider would be $.10 - $.13

I never knew about these. Doing some research, they might sound like what i'm looking for. Thanks! I'll be looking for samples. I am concerned about them flaking/crumbling as I definitely don't want any flakes on the table. Also concerned about thickness consistency as I'd like even stacks

I'd consider this but I think I'd end up upgrading my set over time with fracs. I'd rather get it right the first time.

Thanks! I think I found my dream set with the JACK ($.25 $1 $5), only if I could find them around my budget. I love that quarter, but i hear they're pricey and that'd be the bulk of my cash set.

I haven't looked into 43mm Sun-Fly HB005 hybrids. I'll need to find some samples

I found Jim's threads on this. Sounds perfect. Thanks for the info!

@JohnnyUtah out of your list, only Paulsons/CPC are actual “clay” chips.

Most of the others are known as China Clays. No points for guessing where they’re manufactured, they are imitation compression clay chips made with a softer plastic to mimic the feel of clays.

Slugged chips are ABS plastic. Not as good felling as China Clay, slippery, and cheap for a reason. Metal slug added for weight. Any cheap, home market chips that weighs over 10g/chip and is “official casino weight” is probably slugged

Clarification, CPC and Paulson are true clay on your list. You can add BCC, TRK, and ASM to that list for what's obtainable out there.

If you are willing to put in the work, and have a drill press or router that you can turn into a chip mill, then vintage ASMs may be a good budget option.

I listed paulsons, cpc, spirit molds. I'm still learning, are these not clay?

Paulsons and CPC are clays. Spirit molds are China clays, which are like clays but are not clays. I wrote in some detail about what consitutes "clay" versus other types of chips here.

If know you really like the Jacks, and they're close to your budget, consider stretching your budget and getting them; I predict you'll be much happier with them than anything else. On the other hand, if they're far outside your budget, consider choosing a new set that's well under your budget as your starter set rather than at the top of your budget. They'll still be nice chips that you'll enjoy using, and it'll save a big chunk of money that you can dedicate towards your purchase of the Jacks sometime down the road when your finances allow.

And get samples! Ask around and see if anyone will sell you a shuffle stack of the Jacks.

Unless you have an ungodly amount of money to spend, you won't get 2-3 racks of original Jack Detroit quarters. There were only 2000 of them, and they are mostly divided up around the world in single racks, barrels, and sample set singles.

Welcome Johnny. You've probably already read this somewhere but buy samples man, a lot of them. There's a bunch of stuff out there that'll interest you and they may or may not be satisfactory once you have them in hand. Samples, samples, samples. Feel free to shoot out questions via PM, even if it's just assistance in obtaining some stuff that you're having trouble finding. Will gladly help.
