Breaking down gambling scenes from movies (1 Viewer)

Thought this might be interesting for some:
So I finally watched the clip...or at least the part with bond.

When Le Chiffre raises with his full house and he and Bond has a stare down, the narrator claims Bond is trying to determine if Le Chiffre is bluffing. Bond is sitting with the nuts, I don't think that's the case. Sure, if he thinks the villain is bluffing there might be a reason to min raise and hope for an all-in bluff shove, but given the stacksizes that's not a likely scenario. A more reasonable explanation is that Bond is tanking to induce a light call in case Le Chiffre isn't that strong (a fish move if you ask me. I've never seen it work, and the fish at my game do it EVERY SINGLE TIME when they're strong).

Also, he explains that Bond tipped the dealer. That would mean that they are playing with cash chips, which would kinda make sense in a winner take all STT that keeps the total constant (i.e. doesn't round up on color-ups), but he didn't mention how unorthodox that would be.

I think someone in Maverick tips the dealer before the final table. Pretty douchy if you don't win!
Maverick: "Hey, I got shorted 5 grand!"
Dude: "Yeah, my bad, I tipped the dealer from the tournament chips..."

Anybody who expects Casino Royale to depict gambling realistically is totally missing the point of a Bond movie.

Or women, or cars, or driving, or spies, or shooting, eh..... real life in general, haha.

Well, it does portray cats fairly realistic. "Pet me, but otherwise I don't give a shit".

They spent like 10-15 minutes on these scenes. That's a big hunk of the movie. They could have made a better effort.

The screenplay wasn't written to appease the poker experts. It was written to advance the plot, and had to explain just enough about the process of the game so a complete imbecile (like me, at the time) could follow the action. Of course it's not real, or even probable, and flouts the rules. So what? That's movie-making.

As wiser persons than me have said, "never let the truth get in the way of a good story." I don't argue with one of the most successful franchise re-boots in the history of cinema, both from acceptance from the fan base and worldwide box office receipts.

The plot could have been about anything. They were just trying to capitalize on the "poker boom" in the post-Moneymaker/Raymer era and made poker games central to the plot. I'm not expecting "Rounders" level detail here, but given it's obvious they decided this plot decision was to fit a trend, they could have tried a little harder than they did.

I know this is an old post but I wanted to say that when I saw this the first time I was like a) you can't tip tourney chips and b) this would never happen IRL. Well the 2nd part came true. Basically I had TJ suited and I'm playing 8 handed in a tournament. Its been forever ago so I cant say the details for sure but the board was 4d6d7? a few bets, turn 7d I raise first people start going nuts reraise come around I say f-it I fold and the river is 8d. 4 players left all go all in, my buddy had naked Ad, player to my left has 77 quads another player had 44 and the last player 5d9d. I mean to me a straightflush is a straightflush to me no different than a royale at least in Holdem in other games maybe it might matter but that was once in a lifetime for me.

The Casino Royale version from 1953 actually has one of the best Baccarat/Chemin de Fer scenes in cinema history, in my opinion.
