Mohegan Sun named number one casino by USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
UNCASVILLE, CT (WFSB) -

A recent report named a Connecticut casino the best in the nation.

Mohegan Sun was announced as the number one in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Last year, Mohegan Sun was voted number two in the same report.

“This was a strong list of destinations that were nominated for best casino in the U.S. and even stronger list that were voted into the top 10. We’re honored to have topped that list; it’s a testament to our whole team and how driven we are to provide the best possible entertainment and gaming attraction we can,” President and General Manager of Mohegan Sun Ray Pineault said in a statement on Tuesday.

However, Mohegan Sun was not alone on the list. Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket was ranked seventh.

----------------------------------------------

The top 10 winners in the category Best U.S. Casino are as follows:

  1. Mohegan Sun - Uncasville, Conn.
  2. Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel & Casino - Las Vegas
  3. Pechanga Resort & Casino - Temecula, Calif.
  4. L'Auberge Casino Resort - Lake Charles, La.
  5. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa - Atlantic City
  6. Peppermill Resort Spa Casino - Reno
  7. Foxwoods Resort Casino - Mashantucket, Conn.
  8. The Cromwell Hotel - Las Vegas
  9. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino - Sioux City, Iowa
  10. Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa - Las Vegas"

Foxwoods is going downhill in a hurry. Offering less and less comped rooms, less points for poker/table games. Their customer service is horrendous, the dealers are horrible in both pit games and poker room. The rooms are always clean but the common areas like restaurants, walkways/hallways, slot machines are very dirty.

That explains the night I tried to go to the Mohegan Sun, only to find every available parking spot already taken. I'm talking every spot in every single parking lot, ramp, gravel pit, all full. I'm still a bit shocked. Gonna have to try again soon..

Word on the street is that Foxwoods and Mohegan are trying to band together and build a casino up I-84 as close to the Mass border as they can find land. They are trying to compete with MGM springfield and Wynn Boston Harbor.

With that in mind, supposedly Twin Rivers is expanding and adding a second casino in Rhode Island.

Hilarious, going to be a funny 10 years with the oversaturation in the market.

I can't believe that Parx, lovingly dubbed Taj 2.0, did not make this list. I've been there many times over the years and have yet to contract any serious illness from the chips and tables (at least nothing that penicillin can't treat). That has to count for something, right? :p

Love Foxwoods, been going there since it opened 25 years ago. But to be honest, the place is a dump, it's dated, it's WAYYYY too large (8 million square feet of gaming space?!?) and it's suffering from competition virtually everywhere.

If I'm taking the wife down to a casino for a show and dinner, Mohegan is 100% where I'm going. It has a resort feel, good restaurants, good bars, and attracts headliners. The poker room honestly is meh - it's nicely appointed but the action is so-so (1/2 and 2/5, NLHE only). That said, unless you regularly play table games (at $50 per bet and up) you aren't getting room discounts and comps on weekends is (virtually) unheard of.

Borgata is like Mohegan but much nicer - I don't know how Borgata isn't the top choice on that list.

Venetian, Aria, Bellagio, and virtually any other Vegas property > Foxwoods. Honestly, it's like what I imagine the Ameristar in East Chicago is, just far larger (too large). Zero energy at Foxwoods on a Friday night, even if a big show is in town, because the property and gaming space are so goddamn huge.

Parx lacks a hotel which I think hurts them as a casino/resort property.

Christ, I would love to see what type of crack den lodging that the owners could design.

Parx is a gambler's casino. You don't go for the shows, food, or ambiance (unless you have a preference for NY and Philly accents). You go there to put your rent/mortgage payment on the table or in a machine. The operators have stuck to their core competency, so I give them credit for that.

There is a hotel across the parking lot that used to be a Marriott property. It's kinda not good. Owned independently now. Stayed there several times. Always a fun walk across that parking lot half-drunk at 4am (it's a very, very large parking lot).

Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel & Casino - Las Vegas
I can see Caesars being rated highly. Not my kind of place, but a good (and clearly popular) joint nonetheless.

The Cromwell Hotel - Las Vegas
Dafuq??? How is this place on the list as best casino???? Not only is the floor small, but the casino itself suuuuucks. Been in there thrice...dead each time, and shitty chips to boot (although I'm sure that's the least of the voters' concerns/interests).

Love seeing my Borgata up there. Good to know NJ and Atlantic City is good for something.

That being said...people aren't happy with MGM noe that they've taken over. Evidently things are different in terms of comps and what not. I only go there for poker and the B bar, and occasionally a show. I get me free parking 2x a month, reduced rate on rooms and 2:1 at the bar. That's all I need. So nothing changed on my end and no complaints.

However...Hard Rock is going to destroy that place. Borgata better hope they can keep their clientele, because Hard Rock could potentially become the best casino on the East Coast if they do it right. And since I basically predicted the sale of the Taj to HR, I plan on making it my go to spot, provided there is a poker room
