Best cleaning without ultrasonic (1 Viewer)

Dang just saw this after I finished! They came out pretty clean but kind of dry and chalky. Might have to oil them now which I was trying to avoid! Any good oils on Amazon that people have used with success? Will it help get the color back? The reds kinda look washed out now...

You just need an unscented mineral oil, typically sold as a laxative or cutting board treatment. You will get your colors back, and it will be dramatic and amazing. Some people are irrationally triggered by the idea of oiling chips, but usually come around after actually trying it.

Just a TINY dab on a rag, press it around a bit on the rag to better distribute, and you can coat like 50 chips before having to re-dip. Less is more. I like to spread onto the face of the chip, avoiding the inlay. Some people like to just hold a stacked barrel and oil only the rolling edges. The oil will seep onto the rest of the chip, but results not as dramatic IMO. Let them dry overnight with the chips laid out on a towel, not touching each other, and give each a quick wipe the next morning. Plenty of other threads with lots of discussion for further research.

Others swear by the technique of swirling oil into a bowl of water and then just dumping a whole batch of chips in, then letting them air dry. Not convinced but will probably give it a go sometime.

I think I am going to try the edge method first since they are the dullest after the magic erasing and cleaning. I'll have to find some local oil tomorrow but I assume grocery stores carry it.

Walgreens or Walmart. And can't emphasize enough, a very tiny amount goes a long way. Over-oiling is the single biggest mistake made by newbies.

I'm going to try the edge method doing 10 to 20 at a time. Do you wipe them off immediately before laying off? I have a feeling the oil will get all over my hands and therefor the tops and bottoms of the chips when laying them out

You are imagining using wayyyy too much oil.

cleaned a rack of Caesars chips last night with my very basic soap and water with scrubby method and they came out dreamy.

Basically what I did. Plus a tooth brush and very small ultra sonic I already had. But the chips are super dry and whiteish now so I wanna oil them a tad.

oh yeah. I love oiling....thats the best part!!!

Hell yeah those are minty too. How did you oil? I did 95 percent just on the edge roll method and 5 percent compression just to see. Now I wait.

I put some oil on a cloth and thoroughly oil the rolling edge. Then I use the exxcess oil and just use my finger to oil the faces.

The next day I wipe em down a bit so players dont get oily.

pretty simple really.

Just followed Moose’s advice on TSP cleaning process for 260 filthy Cincy HS chips. (What were people eating in that casino?) Chips look great! Thanks for the pro tip!

Just did the same last night for the first time, worked perfectly!

A bit late to the party but I did almost all my Horseshoe Clevelands by hand. I made a jig using a piece of plexiglass and a hole saw. I then used rubber bands to attach the jig to an old cutting board. It made it easy to drop six chips in and scrub them all at once. Here's the thread: Cleaning the Horseshoes by Hand

I used a small amount of dish soap only because none of the stores around me had the right kind of TSP. But the real reason for the whole process as I did it is that I did not want these to be completely spotless because of their intended use. That precluded the ultrasonic on most of them. As a general rule though I go straight to the ultrasonic for any new acquisitions.

This thread has been great for a new chipper. Have some dirty Paulson hotstamps incoming. Understand TSP is a no go and that you can’t scrub the hotstamp. What cleaning solution (type and ratio with warm/hot water) would you recommend? And beyond protecting the hotstamp with your thumb while cleaning it, can anything be done to clean up the dirty center of the chip?

Just thought of one more thing. Oxy doesn't really kill germs right? Just gets rid of stains? I'm not even normally a germaphobe but something about dirty used casino chips covered in grime makes me uneasy lol.
Lysol wipes lol

I made this video about hand cleaning and oiling. It has very little in the way of good production value, but might help a new chipper with some basics.

Very nice video. I'll have to try this method. Looks like I'm going to need a bigger kitchen.

Nice video! Good edits and nice camera work too Excellent length.

Out of curiosity why Dawn over TSP?

Does it have to be dawn

Someone more experienced will chime in but for now... I don't think it has to be dawn but its been proven to not be harmful for all different types of chips so it's just the safe bet. TSP is a powerful cleaner that can eat away at a number of different chips unlike dawn. I believe ASMs are one of the makes of chips that it will wear down if kept in TSP too long. Again someone more experienced will be able to give more details.

Dawn has really effective degreasing agents, and it's safe for all types of chips.

Get the Ultra version, not the Platinum. The Platinum versions contain about 10% extra alcohol ingredients, and are considered combustible liquids.
