Hi all,

I am going to be cleaning some chips soon and want to know what the best possible option to use is as far as cleaning chips. Not interested in an ultrasonic cleaner, looking to do it by hand. So if anyone could help me out and let me know what the best solution is like soap, special cleaner, etc.

Thank you
-Cody

Hi Cody,

I've had good luck with Dawn and a soft toothbrush. Some people use Lundmark TSP, and additional methods. I'd search around a bit before diving in as it looks like different types of chips react differently. I'm pretty new at this so I was cautious and just used the dawn and elbow grease, and was really happy with the results.

Here is a good thread to get you started:

Oxiclean and a denture brush. The bristles are a bit stiffer than your average toothbrush

This and a toothbrush. Gets the gunk off for me. Sometimes a toothpick is necessary for really embedded hooker juice.

Spendy but really great for chip cleaning - way better than any detergent method and a little dab-'ill-do-ya. I use this for smaller cleaning jobs but pull out the ultrasonic if doing any volume.

Hey Cody,

I'm no pro, but I'd like to offer input. I've done a lot of cleaning etc.

I kind of triage it. I first like to give the chips a soak in lukewarm water with some Dawn soap. After a good soak, use the dawn dish soap and a toothbrush. It really works well.

If there is grime or dirt that won't lift, I move on to a higher stage, and use a melamine sponge pad. (Magic Eraser is one brand, and the other day, @FordPickup92 showcased a different variety of the same thing)
**Brie, would love to know your thoughts on it if you've had a chance to peruse**

make sure to rinse and dry thoroughly, each and every chip that gets through a wash.

There are no bad questions to ask. There is no rule stating you must use the search function. If nobody helps you, you can always use the search function. However, always nice people to help you here.

EDIT : can't stress enough, NO MELAMINE on HOT STAMPS. I wrecked one like that. Took the stamp right off. Hard lesson learned.

TSP is safe for non hot stamped chips and you can use in warm water without ultrasonic cleaning, we soak ours for 5 mins, super dirty a bit longer (by super dirty I mean actual chunks of hooker snot)
Nav, the other brand eraser is okay, it works, but seems to get used up a bit quicker.
Also soaking in warm soap water prior to scrubbing is helpful, I actually soaked a hot stamp that was very stained over night in dawn water and it came out clean the next day (this was an accident) might try it again with a burn damaged one soon.
Be advised, if you are doing any kind of labeled chip please test soak just one before doing all of them. Some labels are susceptible to absorbing water through the inlay and that will damage the face of the chip. We wash all out hot stamps with magic eraser, and hold our thumbs over the center area of the stamp to protect them. Another tool that can be used is a nail brush with mild bristles, on inlaid chips, for the gunk jammed up in the hats and canes (or whatever mould)

Thank you everyone for your responses and recommendations. I bought some lundmark tsp, sterlings magic and some magic erasers. I am just going to give them all a try and see what i like best and such. I’m looking forward to cleaning some chips up.

I did do some searching before posting this but also just wanted to gain some more input and personal experiences.
Some of the senior members prefer if you use the search function I think. It's less clutter for the board, so I understand probably why some members don't like a new user to post new threads about previously discussed topics.

That said, you asked a great question, and using the search, sometimes doesn't net the answers you are looking for, and there is no other alternative.

Always here to help. I'm a new guy though. So I guess I don't really consider if you've "put in the work" or not. I prefer to just be helpful. This is a forum afterall.

Best of luck with your cleanings, Cody!

@BELGRADE Interested to know...

Are you a tradesman or an operator of some sort?

I see some process diagrams there...or piping diagrams. Just curious. I look at similar "Process and Instrumentation Diagrams" at work all the time.

Jim @ TheChipRoom used to sell it. Probably need to find a distributor.

I used Search. It brought me here. Several posts say "it depends on what chips." But they didn't elaborate. Any special precautions on older China clays? Spirit mold daVincis. Does it matter if chips have flea bites or minor cracks? OK to soak in Dawn and warm water?

I just cleaned a bunch of chips and reported on the experience in another thread. I soaked the chips in warm water and dawn solution. Then scrubbed with a brush. It removed all the gunk but did not remove the ground in dirt stains. For that u need magic eraser. Chip on the left was scrubbed with the brush. Chip on right got magic eraser. Hope this helps.
