Best cases for premium chips (1 Viewer)

The wooden box has a decorative value, but is totally prohibitive for transport, including to next door.

The Versa Deluxe ones are excellent (the only sturdy aluminum ones), but only come in 500ct and 1000ct (without wheels!) sizes, not something in between (although you can additionally store 4 soft plastic tubes x26-27 chips each) in the 500, taking out the dividers from the intended card deck space.

The level of protection and price of the Pelicans is overkill, but you have many cheaper alternatives in North America. Search for Apache, Member's (NOT Maker's! :)) Mark etc. Of course, you have to buy plastic racks for the chips if you go that way.

Ive have 3 Versa 1000 count cases and in just 4 months, there are 2 broken feet and the back of the interior lining where the case opens and bends has cracked on 2 of them. Case is sturdy, but quality build is not right word I would use.

The best safety for transport is going to be a Pelican-type case. I have a Pelican and use 4x25 boxes instead of 5x20 racks. With lids, the chips are very secure. Mine has wheels, which I'd suggest if you need to carry 1,000 or more, especially for any distance.

There are several things I like about my case. It has a lid organizer where I can carry cards, timers, buttons, and several ways to carry a bankroll if you want to.

Another good carry option is a range bag. I have 4 I use for transporting less than 1,000 chips, but 2 of them will actually hold 1,600 chips, and the two smaller ones will hold about 1,300-1,400. The bags are very sturdy, and I don't know the cost of something liek Versa's, but I have $17-25 in the range bags. Since they are designed to carry guns and ammo, poker chips are lighter and easier to carry. The carry handles are virtually unbreakable, and you can even get shoulder straps. There is room to carry other items as well -- cards, etc.

Agreed that the best cases are Pelicans but also agree they’re overkill for any poker chip adventure unless you’re checking a bag on an a trip with multiple connecting flights. Off brand Pelicans I believe are the best value overall with still more than enough protection than you’ll ever really need. I’ve never used one of my range bags as @TexRex mentioned but I’m sure it’s work fine. @gkitt80 also used a website to design dope custom case paddings. His is setup like a Versa in that all the chips are in one layer (unlike Pelicans where you generally stack racks) and doesn’t need racks to hold the chips. I think my favorite would be a Pelican case with a custom insert like he got.

Yeah, the Costco case is good too, but it is really big. Depends on number of chips you need to move

I recently decided to cut a new foam insert for my Seahorse 710 case. The insert that I had designed on the vendors app was a bit disappointing, was not a snug fit... An hour later on my CNC machine and everything now fits perfect. Plan on changing out the foam in the lid and adding a logo... more pics to come.

+1 for Versa cases and +1 for Pelican's. I probably will not buy another case though that isn't custom cut foam ala something like the below. Got this from mycasebuilder.com

Do you have the layout measurements for the foam and the case make and model you used for this? I would love to do something similar. Thanks.

Sure do, but can’t take credit for the measurements. @Matthew627 posted this thread a couple of months ago that gave some pretty good instructions / dimensions to use, which is what I leveraged when I made the case pictured above. The specific case I used in this picture was the J-250 from mycasebuilder.com. I sold my case to @TheBigTater, but loved it when I owned it (only sold the case as I sold the chips pictured and didn't have a use for it).

Happy to answer any additional questions, just let me know.

Anyone have a link for a case available from Costco? Sams seems to not be restocking theirs at the moment. Thx.

I have a Versa 500 and 1000. 500 seems much better build and more solid. I carry the 500 by the handle with no worries. 1000 not so much, I do not trust the handle and wind up carrying it by the sides with 2 hands against my core like a peanut vendor or something. Latch issues and felt tearing at the 1000 seam too. Seems like a 750 or 800 case would be a good idea for them to make. I recently bought 2 RTIC pluck foam 18” cases and love them. Cheaper too and you can custom lay it out.

Which set is that if you don’t mind me asking? They look pretty sweet!
mixed set, pink $.50 & white $1 are both terribles st. joes, red $5 & green $25 is cancun casino, black $100 is Horseshoe. all RHC and can be found mint or near mint generally.

Those wood boxes are purely for showing off, not for transport.
If you want transport safety, get a Pelican case with pick and pluck foam.
^^^^

I have wooden boxes but they are purely for display. If you want to take them on the go invest in a pelican case.

I saw that and I ordered three!
How are you liking those three new Versa cases you picked up? I got one, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. I don't love that there is nothing inside the case to hold racks together or preventing them from swaying. Is the thick foam supposed to be on top? With foam on top, its really hard ro get the bottom two racks out. And with foam on bottom (which can't be right), the racks sway like a palm tree in a hurricane. Am I missing something? If you could resolve these issues, the case looks awesome, is built solid, and is a lot easier to carry around than a birdcage.

Personally I love them. I put the foam on top with the "chisels" of the foam facing downwards. I believe the foam is there to keep the chips from swaying.

Again I really don't think it's hard to get the bottom two racks out. Remove two barrels, clamp the rack edge with your fingers and lift out one rack. Then just scoop the other rack out.
