Any advice on traveling to Atlantic City? I assume flying into Philly airport, then grabbing an Uber?

Thanks.

No advice. But Borgada was my fave, it was the first time I noticed chips. Probably why I love plastics :)

Last few times I've done AC. I've flown into Philly and rented a car. I just booked a flight out there for June with the family as I'm dropping the kids off with my wife's brother so we can get away for the weekend.

I think the last car cost me like $50 for 3 full days. I booked it early and then just kept an eye on prices and got it super cheap the week before (autoslash is a great tool). Just make sure you bring change/small bills for the tolls or you will get socked for the plate pass usage. I think that cost me $60 once because they hit me with 4 $13/administrative charges, one for each toll because I didn't have change and the per day charge for the usage was still like $20... Stupid.

Highly recommended the Borgata especially if you are planning on playing poker. If you want to be somewhere close to the boardwalk the Hard Rock is also a very nice option.

Hi Tommy I live in New Jersey. Philly would be the closest major airport for you. Newark and JFK are much much further. The local airports would probably not be convenient to fly in to from where you are coming from. The Atlantic City Airport is "International", but probably not a lot of international flights go into there on a regular basis. If you're going to go somewhere else in NJ, Philly, or New York I would rent a car. I don't know much about Uber locally.

The Borgata as everyone said is the best place to play Poker. The poker room is the largest in AC and has a lot of tables. There is always a lot of action at the Borgata from Low Stakes to High Stakes. It also has a lot of other nice table game areas and has nice restaurants and bars. They also have a nice pool area and get a lot of Major acts to perform there. The Ocean Casino and the Hard Rock are the Newest Casinos in AC. The Hard Rock is a really nice Casino, but it has no Poker yet. It did get Voted as the #1 Casino in Atlantic City and overtook the Borgata as #1. Pretty impressive for a little over a year in operation. The Ocean casino while I have not been there yet does have Poker and I heard it is a pretty nice casino. The Tropicana is a decent casino too. It has a lot of top notch restaurants. I love he Palms Steakhouse. The Trop has poker too, but I haven't been there since they moved to a new Poker room. So I can't comment on it. Bally's or Caeasar's Palace I wouldn't recommend those as much. Those two seem to not have improved that much over the years especially the poker room. Oh the Golden Nugget and Harrah's are off the Boardwalk too, but if your going to be off the boardwalk you're better off at the Borgata.

AC is about an hour from the Philly airport so that may be too long for an Uber...though a lot of Uber drivers in AC come in from Philly on slow nights. But Philly is where you want to fly into.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Vegas but the Borgata has always been my favorite casino in either AC or Vegas. It’s also the first casino when you enter AC. It’s by far the best poker room....massive. The casino is the classiest IMO. Also great restaurants. Oceans has great restaurants too but the poker situation is weak. One table the time I was there (in a summer weekend).

On the topic of restaurant, if that is something you like check out some old AC institutions like Dock’s and Kinfe and Fork (where the real Nucky Johnson used to go ;))

The town isn’t kinda beat. If you get board with the Casino scene check out Philly on the way out. There are some big card rooms there as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not going there for poker specifically, but will probably check out some of the poker rooms while I'm down there. I will be staying in the Boardwalk area.

Sounds like I'll be checking out the Borgata and Hard Rock for sure.

Transportation

Unfortunately, for those planning to fly, ATLANTIC CITY is not terribly easy to reach. There is an airport just nine miles from Atlantic City, but regularly scheduled flights there are usually BRUTALLY EXPENSIVE. Once at the Atlantic City airport, cabs are readily available. The PHILADELPHIA airport is 50 miles from Atlantic City, with regular train service for only $8. Pick up the SEPTA R1 train directly in front of the Philadelphia airport terminals, and take the train to 30th Street Station in Philadelphia (three stops after leaving the airport). Change trains at 30th Street for NJ Transit for Atlantic City. NJ Transit will drop you off at the Atlantic City train station 9 blocks off the boardwalk. Your NJ Transit ticket includes no-wait bus service to all casinos when you exit the train. Schedules for these trains are located at:

  • Airport to 30th Street — SEPTA.
  • 30th Street to A.C. — NJ Transit.
You are well advised to check the train schedules in advance, lest you be destined to repeat ADB Jester's overnight stay in 30th Street station at ATLARGE III, missing the Smoker.

Check the SEPTA and NJ Transit pages for train info.
Back in March, one of the lines was out of service for a safety (automated traffic control, I think) upgrade.

[edit]
Looks like it is back in service.

Atlantic City Rail Line (ACRL)
NJ TRANSIT has resumed full service on the Atlantic City Rail Line (ACRL) effective Sunday, May 12, 2019 with an improved schedule. It includes an adjustment to a weekday a.m. peak period roundtrip which fills a gap in arrivals at Philadelphia 30th St. Station during the morning rush hour. There are now be five trains that arrive in Philadelphia prior to noon, up from three, and reduce wait times between trains to a maximum of two hours throughout the service day. Similar adjustments have been made to the weekend schedule. Click here for the new Weekday timetable and click here for the new Weekend timetable.

Not sure what your travel plans are (i.e. if Atlantic City is your only destination...), and I also don't know what service is like between YVR and PHL, since I live in Northern NJ and fly in and out of EWR exclusively. But I do know that there is nonstop daily service between EWR and YVR (on an Air Canada 787-900 series, if you're into planes).

EWR to Atlantic City can be done by car in under 2 hours. Plus flying into Newark makes any NYC expeditions a breeze.

Just a thought as far as keeping your options open. If you're simply interested in getting to and from AC from the airport as quickly as possible, definitely PHL.

Dear god...why?

As you will drive into New Jersey you may see this sign.

Thanks. I'm only there for 3 nights and yes, AC is the destination so I'm just looking to get in and out. From the comments already I've booked my flight from YVR to SEA to PHL. I'll try to Uber from there, or public transit as suggest by @APatHand

Don't stray too far from the casinos, boardwalk or main street areas, the area goes from OK to bad really quick. Side streets are prime mugging areas, especially at night.
Wait won't he need to take side streets to get to the massa..... Wait never mind this a family friendly site.

Tommy before you fly out of Philly airport you have to stop and get a Cheesesteak. The Question is Pats or Ginos?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with either of these. My knowledge of the USA outside of WA and Vegas is very, very limited.

In the city of Philadelphia it is customary to make cheese steaks using ”wiz” (aka cheese you spray out of a can). While sounding disturbing and probably semi-safe for consumption, they actually are not half bad. The two establishments mentioned above are competitors in close proximity, each with unusually loyal fan bases. More discerning consumers will deride both of these establishments and recommend others which will be claimed as far superior. Mind you, all of them are making cheese steaks with wiz. So yeah, if you like cheese steaks give one a try.

AC is a rough area, not sure about UBER but I don’t recommend public transportation, especially at night. It’s also getting cold outside this time off year.

First, only tourists and drunk people (after the bars close) go to Pats and Ginos which are directly across an intersection from each other.
Second, of the 1000s of cheese steak joints in the Philly area only a handful use “wiz”. Most use American or provolone cheese with American probably the most populal.
Third, the cheese steak isn’t the best sandwich in philly And most don’t eat that many.

The best hot sandwiches in the city are Italian pork, sharp provole, and brocco rabe. The masters of those are John’s Roast Pork, DiNics, and Tony Luke’s.

But if you desire the world heavyweight champion of sandwhiches you will need to get a roast beef combo at Nicks on 20th and Jackson. Simply the greatest sandwich ever produced by human hands. Be careful of the fake nicks.

This sandwich is more worth a flight than seeing AC.

Oh man, as @Old State mentioned, Dinics Roast Pork Sandwich with Broccoli Rabe.

AC: Borgata, and Ocean Resort

Getting around AC: taxis are capped at $13? Probably just as convenient as Uber. There's also a $2 jitneys that make the rounds. Never personally taken them, but I hear it's wild ride.
