Hey chippers,

Simple question for you. I know we all have a variety of sets , and sometimes we want to use them even if it’s not optimal just to get them in play. I have a cash set (Tina Molds) and a tournament set BCC CDI. Now, personally I love composite clays more than ceramic, but they both have their place.

I did a tournament last week with the BCCs and they were glorious. I typically use the cash set for… cash lol. But how do you guys feel about using tournament denoms for cash chips? Ie, like they’re just missing the decimal place. 25 = 25c, 100 = 1.00, 500 = 5.00

I know I’ve done this before, and the progression is natural for the way humans think. But does it annoy the average player? I can’t imagine it does as they’re generally OK with paper cards and dice chips with no denoms.

Thoughts ? Do you hate it, do you love it ? Is it worth doing this just to get BCCs in play ? Does having 4 different chips annoy you , or cause people to hoard?

Starting stacks are $100 and these would be the break downs

Cash set - 20 x 25c , 20 x $1, 15 x $5
Tourney - 20 x 25, 20 x 100, 7 x 500, 4 x 1000

See photos below and obligatory small splashed pot to get a feel do how they look!

I don’t care for the divided structure, I like the correct denoms. But if it works for you, then why not? I would be careful if you’re using the set for tournies too though

Too many quarters for the cash game given the starting buy in. I know its easier doing full barrels, but then would consider giving quarters to only the first few buy ins and let everyone else buy quarters off those people to start with.

Thanks for the input It would be my first time doing it this way with this chip set. Ideally, we would do it with 3 denoms only, but I dont have enough 500 chips to run the game, so the 1000s came out. I guess my desire to use the chips overrides the fact that theres no decimal points, theres 4 chips in play instead of 3, and a $10 is a non standard denom  :ROFLMAO:

Regarding having too many 25c in play, I also agree, but our group has decided collectively we like to have more chips on the table. Ive settled on a barrel of 25c and $1 each and that seems to be the right balance for us. It doesn't seem to cause issues or slow down the game. For a tournament of course, I am strict and do a standard 12-12-5-6 breakdown for a T10000, as too many small blind/big blind chips just slows the game down

Regarding using the set for tourneys, do you mean because someone could steal them and reintroduce into a tournament down the road? I suppose I would know when I rack up the chips at the end of the night there are some missing

Do as you like, as long it easy division like 2 or 10 or 100. Most poker degens don't really care

I designed my Casino Nacional set this way, tell my players to pretend the dollar sign is a cent sign, and it has never been a problem.

This sets breakdown isn't optimal either, but I like lots of chips on the table and sacrificed the 4th denom. It slows the game down a little but it's ok with me.

I don't like using the tourney chips (which are actually cash chips) as cash chips at 1/100. I just figure if we're going to use chips with numbers on them, they might as well be the right numbers.
As far as handing out 20 quarters per player, I think it's more than you need but it's fine.

I never host tournaments. I have a large inplay tournament set. I use them exactly as you describe, 25 is a quarter, 100 is a dollar etc. Never had any issues with people understanding. I'll do the same thing when we play a micro game with the wives, $5 as 5c etc.

I don't recommend using the same set for cash and tournaments, but it's doable with some diligence. Never do it on the same night though.

I have 120 quarters in my cash sets. I give a full barrel to the first 6 people to buy in (usually $100 for 25c/50c blinds), everybody else gets an extra $5 and makes change when needed. Works great. Depending on how many 500 and 1k chips you have, I would probably hold the 1ks for rebuys and get as many 500 ($5) in play as possible.

I'd agree with 20 quarters being too many, but it also depends on how your group bets. My group doesn't bet in quarters often after the blinds come out. They will typically be betting with the $1 chips and throwing in $5s when they want some sizeable bets. I also only have 100 quarters, but I give the first 6-7 people 12x quarters and 17x dollars. The rest of the players get 8x quarters and 18 dollars and rebuys are done with 5s to change with the table. We haven't had issues with not enough quarters. You say your group prefers more chips on the table, so you can probably ignore my opinion...whatever is OK for your group is probably the best way to do it.

Agree with most comments above. Keep them separate, tourney chips for tourneys, cash for cash.

Bigger problem is if some go missing during a tournament where their cash value is minimal (intentionally or accidentally) and are later introduced into the cash game where they represent real money -- resulting in your cash bank beong short and unable to cover all of the chips in play at cashout (and thus somebody gets stiffed). And as host, that 'somebody' should be you. Just not worth it long-term.

Thats a fair point. I host tournaments at a ratio of 5:1. Every 4-5 cash games we do a tournament. So I suppose it's more likely the reverse would be true, tourney chips from the cash game make their way to the infrequent tournaments. This does seem less likely however
