Pretty new here, but have always intrinsically loved the look and feel of poker chips. Do most of ya'll collect the chips (where *that* is the hobby) or work to create sets to play with? When creating sets are you mixing and matching from casinos or trying to create unified sets?

Yes! lol

When I first came on here, I assumed everybody collected sets to play with. Because that's what I was interested in, so that's about all that I saw. I remember I came across a guy here who seemed to just collect barrels (quantities of 20) of chips. I thought that was the strangest thing ever. And I think he thought I was pretty strange for thinking his approach to the hobby was strange. I'm pretty sure the older guys who collect singles think that we playable set collectors are out of our minds. It takes all types.

I do always seem to keep a few random barrels I love around.....

I collect playable sets.

Once in a while I buy a finished set but I also like the hunt, seeking out lonely racks, barrels or chips to get the set just how I want it. And don’t forget the amazing people here on the forum, without them I would not have made it this far in this hobby!

Buy, sell and trade. And constantly refreshing the page, PCF, eBay… it’s an addiction.

I’m always on the hunt for the next set, with 3 playable cash sets in ranges of 1/1 to 5/5 and 2 tournament sets, one for 14 people and one covering up to 25 people.

There is always more chips out there and always a set that’s more appealing!

Welcome to the forum!!!

I collect playable set as my original intention before finding PCF is to get a new Set of chips for my Cash Game

It been a Huge Rabbit Hole ever since, and I stick to a few rules when buying them

1) don’t follow the bandwagon, go for what you are interested
2) it is a luxury hobby, go for what you can afford. And always keep within the budget
3) Must be playable set, I don’t like the idea to just buy them and never use them
4) Keep each set limited to 500-600 to cover one stake or 600-800 to cover 2 stake

Also, focus one set at a time. Take your time and enjoy the hunting and finding those add-on

I acquire sets to play them frequently. I am not a collector at all and I will sell any sets that don’t get used.

I am also interested in customization and design more so than owning.

I prefer playable sets. There are some who collect hard to find individual chips, which is also cool if that is your preference.

Like many, I have quite a few sample sets I've bought over the years, and occasionally I'll pull a cool chip out of that pile to use as a card capper, but its not my main focus.

Super interesting answers here...I can definitely see it being addicting for sure and a fascinating hunt!

Definitely playable sets for me. I have a few sample sets though that I have traded for/been gifted, that I hold dear:
