I’m new here and have a quick question. I just bought some old clay (I think) chips from a local auction. The carousel holder is old and appears to have some wood inlay in the design. How can I know what the chips are made from and what the set is worth?

Thanks!

While I don't specifically collect those chips, I do have a variety of 1890 - 1940 era chips. My personal rule of thumb is no more than a quarter / per chip < unless I want them badly, then screw the cost. >

Those look like they are ~100 / 120 years old. Sadly, chips aren't more valuable due to age. Best guess, those chips are worth about a nickel each, at best. The chip carrier might have some value. Perhaps. Wild guess, $20.

I am sorry, this likely is not what you had in mind. Hopefully you have some plan / use in mind. I let my grandkids play with chips very similar to those and don't get upset when breakage happens.

Don't give up! -=- DrStrange

Here are some close ups of the chips. I assume they’re clay and not Bakelite but I’m no expert.

I'm 99% sure it's a Dreuke. I have the same carousel (8 slot), and it has a "Pattberg Novelty" sticker on the bottom. But I think it was probably made by Dreuke for that company.

Drop one on a tile floor. When it shatters into several pieces, you can be reassured that it's "clay". In fact, they're probably a lot more clay than compressed clays (Paulson, TRK, BCC, ASM/CPC, etc).

Reminds me so much of my old “jockey mold” chips we played with in college! My mom got them for me from a thrift shop. (Yes, my mom got me my first set of chips.).

Loved those chips!
