This might be an odd forum to say this but after having received a sample set of Jacks chips, I'm a bit disappointed. I'm not sure what I was expecting but the chips almost feel...cheap and plasticky.

I was expecting the colors to be bright and eye catching and the texture to almost be chalky. Instead the chip colors just seem dull and faded. Is it just because they're used chips or did I just have unrealistic expectations of Paulsons?

Did you get a full sample set including primary and secondary chips? If so, then I do think you may have unrealistic expectations. There are a lot of nice colours covered by that set.

What other chips have you checked out? Ehat are you comparing these to?

And in response to the thread title, no.

It's hard to live up to such hype... Like going into a movie with high expectations.

I only just got the sample set of primaries. Haven't seen the secondary set. I was comparing them to the Key West sample set from classic poker chips and the Valentinos from BR Pro Poker. Maybe it really is because its used...who knows? The Key west chips felt a bit more...solid/premium. The Paulsons feel like it might crack if I drop it too hard on the table.

No they are not overrated at all. I have played in some big games where good chips can make a real difference. Paulson chips (to me) seem to outperform all of the other chips by a lot - they have a way of tipping and leaning and still holding while a lot of chips are just slippery and too light or too heavy and clunky. I purchased some unicorn mold cheap chips that look really nice and are cheap…but to me they suck. Slide all over the place and super easy to knock over your stack. I have played with the china clays many times too - those are decent to play with - quality is not as good but they do have some of the same qualities as a paulson. There is a reason casinos use paulsons - they are the best chip. That said there are lots of chips that will play decent and especially in a smaller stakes game. People on here can definitely steer you in a good direction on chips but no one could convince me paulsons arent the best. I like the asm chip too or whoever does the horsehead and a-mold and rounders replica chips - those are right up there with or at least near paulson but i still think paulson holds number one spot pretty easily. Im talking as a very regular poker player more so than for the love of and admiration of the chips. Functionally the paulsons do everything i want them to do and they hold their value pretty well too.

I think you have used RHC. Even used paulsons are pricey. Excellent condition THC or other Paulsons are nice, but overpriced in this era. Not too much of fan of hat and cane design, but good condition Paulsons other than RHC are top tier for me. Sometimes you need to compare side to side. I like my other chips that are not Paulson, but when I compared them side by side I can see the difference. Cincinnati Jacks? It might be easier if you post a picture.

NO!
Paulson chips are great! They’re the chips used at most casinos…

But that’s why you buy samples… Since they’re used you can try LIGHTLY oiling them to bring the color out IMO.

Maybe try CPC next, they might have the chalky, less plasticy feel you’re looking for.

not all Paulsons are the same even all rhc and of the sets I’ve gotten I was most disappointed in those jacks as well. Sorry bud!

Yeah I think most Jacks are heavily used because they were from a casino with years of usage.

I'd have to say NO. Paulson are quite amazing, IMHO.

Would love to see a picture of the sample you received. Those Jack $1K are pretty darn bright, if you ask me, but in this hobby, one man's throw away trash can be another's man holy grail. Very subjective hobby...

You also should get more samples. I'll admit, while I'm a total Jack fan, the labels are pretty boring and leave much to be desired! Check out some Horseshoe chips or perhaps Isle Girardeau, or Isle of Capri.

You got to be careful with some Isle of Capri. I got some from The Chiproom that were textured and material like cardboard. It felt like it was some type of recycled material. And they definitely didn't hold their price.

These Capri?
ALL of those have gone nothing but up
The 50c/$1/2.50/5 are way up
The $1/2.50/50c sky high

The answer to your question is subjective. I would rather have a nice poker table than chips and quality playing cards would be a close third.

The more card games I play, the less I care about the chips. I am sure that is true for others who spend a lot of time playing cards. Chips become secondary.

@Anthony Martino, @Rhodeman77?

Depends what you mean by nice table. I’m upgrading from a table topper before I buy a set of Paulson anything but getting the nice chips is a much higher priority than getting a high end custom table with shuffle master built in.

specifically the $25, I can't speak on the rest. Looks nice in picture, but looks and feels awful in person. Looking back at it, it was the only one that had a glimmer and can't say for sure paulson made that one. It definitely wasn't the clay material of paulson standards. Not sure what material it was even. The color wasn't vibrant because of whatever material it was. Also the inlay look straight up like glossy paper and can be damaged easily or removed. It kind of felt like a boot leg because I've never seen quality like this at any casino.

That's about my order too

Nice playing surface, then chips, then cards

Yah the $25/100 house mold are some of my least favorite chips ever
They ruined that rack on the $25 and up such a shame. Anyone here could design a better chip in their sleep and the house mold is trash

Maybe the house mold was a chip security thing but puke. Total fail

Not even that the price dropped on them too not too long after.

I’ve felt a good amount of CPC
I wouldn’t pay $50 a rack for that shuffling glass sound stuff
Well I'd pay $50 a rack if it was that low. At least in my opinion CPC had better material and construction than those Isle of Crapi.

Yah the house mold looks and from the consensus here feels awful.

The issue with CPC And people spending $300 a rack then waiting nine months like ok cool story bro. I’ll never order CPC chips. I’d do China clay or cards mold ceramics first.

My limit on CPC would be like $1 over the cost of China clay or ceramics

Sorry not sorry
