So I just ordered a sample set of Dunes from Apache Poker because as much as I would like to try a Paulson set, I can't justify the cost.
I'm gonna love these and end up buying a 600 chip set, aren't I? lol

Maybe...if you didn't order samples of anything else to compare to, even more likely...

The Dunes are a great design

I would have, but my options for non-Paulson are Bank, Dunes, Majestic, Pharaoh's, or Royal.

Bank - don't like the inlay
Majestic - the 1000's are always sold out
Pharaoh - not crazy about the colors but it's a possibility
Royal - almost everything always sold out

That's why I went with just the Dunes for now. I like the colors, I like the inlay, and they're not all sold out.

Order more samples of all different kinds before you pull the trigger on a set! Try some ceramics, also, if you are looking in the China clay Dunes price range. You can pick up sample sets from BR Pro Poker. See if you can get your hands on some Paulsons for comparison. Apache has Paulsons (Majestic Star and Jack Cincinnati) and even some TRK sample sets. It's a great way to see what you like before you make an investment in a bigger set.

Or, save your wallet and ignore my advice. :D

The Dunes set from Apache is great, and will serve you well!

Definitely  .

Don't let us Paulson snobs deter your decision; my guys love the Dunes to the extent I have stopped taking votes on what sets go into play.

I would just say make sure you give them a nice little wash with some soap and warm water, followed by a light oiling after letting them dry for ~24hrs. This helps a good deal with the smell and making the colors pop more. Let us know what you go with after seeing them in person.

Ultimately what I would like to get is a nice clay set of 500 for my home cash game $20 buy-ins.
5c/25c/1/5/20 denoms
But most of the nice sets don't seem to have a 5c chip. So the search hasn't been easy.

So the sample set came and I immediately liked these more than my 14g Monte Carlo set.
Plus I picked up a matching dealer button and an actual casino used Ceasar's palace chip.

However, I can't decide if I want to use these for my cash games ($20 buy-in 25c/1/5/20)
OR if I want to go with the Majestic set instead (5c/25c/1/5/10)

So to find out I just ordered a Majestic sample set and dealer button to compare.

I got a sample set of Majestics, Dunes, Milanos and Casino Royals and they all are great. I had a very hard time deciding on what I wanted to go with. Eventually with feel and different colors available I went with Majestics. Good luck with your search! I loved the Dunes, too!

I have a set of Majestic's coming right now.
But the 5c/25c chips will be sold out until June. Because of that I may end up just getting what I need in Dunes.

I sampled everything like you are doing, and I eventually went with Royals for our tournament set, which have been really, really nice. For cash, I have a set of CC Pharaoh's which I love also, but not quite as much as the Royals. Since Majestics are so similar to Royals, I'm guessing that would be an excellent set. And you can order blanks and then do custom labels for your group!

FYI, per Apache’s website:
Yeah I saw that. That's changed since I looked a couple days ago. Guess it doesn't matter what i do I'm waiting either way now.
The set I am getting will be giving me more 25c chips than I need. I would be willing to part with a rack of them. DM if interested.
I'll keep that in mind thanks

Gear labels for 5c chips and blanks. That is what I did for the rack of 5c I have for whenever we play a microstakes/social games. Same quality as the originals should be able to do that for any of these sets

Got my Majestic set finally about a week and a half after I ordered them and paid more for shipping than last time.
But I do think I may go with these for my cash game chips. Whether I get these exact chips or blanks that I put my own inlay on, regardless I do like these a bit more than the Dunes set.
I'm considering the 25c/50c/1/5 chips for my $20 buy-in cash games

You prob have me on ignore, but anyway, consider dropping the 50c (unless it’s going to be used as a nickel) in favor of more 1s or 5s, or even 20s for future use. The 50c doesn’t add much value to the bank and too many denoms in play makes it messy.

I actually had considered that. But something about only having 4 chip types in a game seems weird to me, especially since in a $20 game, the $5 chips are going to be very rare. Meaning that if I eliminate the 50c, that only leaves the 25c and $1 to be used for practically everything.

I mean yeah I can see it and yes it does make sense, but it just feels very limiting to me you know?

Of course you should do what feels right for you and your game, but it is more efficient to make each denom 4-5x the next. Only real reason to do a 50c (in which case it would make sense to skip the 25c) would be for a $0.5/1 game. But then there is merit in skipping the frac all together and just play $1/1.

Most likely what's gonna happen since I have to wait until June to order anyway is I'll end up getting the 5c chip instead of the 50c chip. The 5c just isn't in the sampler set.

This is what I would recommend too. With a $20 game having a 5c chip will be more useful, but also allow you to play bigger games as well without having a lot of .25/.50 chips (or chips of similar value). I ran into a similar issue with my majestic set, I play a game with coworkers that don't really play a lot and play around from 0.05/0.10 with them (really more of a "social" game if you will), but my group of "players" typically plays .25/.50 (at least thats where it started) up to 1/2+ more recently. I have 0.05/.25/1/5/20 and a single barrel of $100s "just incase". It is sort of a funky set overall I've put together because one group plays a lot of mixed games and it supports various stakes, but it works.

Precisely why I'm doing this. Years ago my friends and I got together every Friday night, everyone would put in $5 and get a stack of chips and we would play until one person had it all. Runner up got their $5 back, 1st place would get the rest.
Now my co-workers like to get together and play multiple card games (Follow the lady, Screw your neighbor, 7 card baseball, 31) and they play nickel, dime, quarter with actual pocket change.
My plan is to make my garage the regular Texas Hold-em spot for cash games with the lure of a real casino feel with the table and real chips.

Might seem overkill but one could get yellow or green blanks and get 5c labels to put on. If stakes are raised in the future you remove the 5c labels and replace them with $20 or $25

Well, I think I decided. Thanks, everyone for the thoughts and input. I think I've decided on these being what I'm going to use for my $20 buy-in cash games. With the exception of course that the $1000 chip has the 5 cent inlay instead of course. I may even buy a rack of the Majestic Star Paulson $1 and $5 in the meantime.
