Can anyone tell me what are the barrel Horseshoe $1 Paulson chips they are selling at Apache Poker Chips? Primary, secondary something else? I have tried to match the picture to some being sold or shown on here but am not seeing those.

Thank you

I see by the link you added that a casino can have several different secondary sets?

I believe they have a few different Horseshoe $1 barrels listed. However, if you're referring to the Cleveland/OH ones, they are Primary (used).

Yes, secondary chips exist in case there is an issue with the integrity of the primary chips. They are there for emergencies, and therefore, are usually in mint condition when they make it to the secondary market for sale, like here.

Seeing some of the selling prices for the different Horseshoe chips on this forum I am just trying to understand why these barrels seem so much cheaper

They're not... They are $80 / rack from Apache (used). They were $60 new from the sale here.

But if you're asking why there's so much cheaper in general than other $1 chips here from other casinos, then the answer is simple: supply/demand, and uniqueness

As a less than 1-week member of PCF, a veritable Newbie to chip collecting and high-end chip knowledge, can someone help me understand what Secondary Chips are (even if that means pointing me to the place with the answers. I did do a search in the Forum on Secondary but came up with classified posts)?

What is the difference in meaning between primary and secondary? If you have secondary chips are those OK to use in play (cash or tournament)? Do you look to buy secondary's before primary's? Etc., etc.
I'm not understanding the terms meaning or limits.

Thanks,
-Doug

As a security measure, casinos make a second (unique) set of chips to replace the primary chips on the floor if they discover the primary chips have been compromised (counterfeited). Thus, they are still in new condition when the casino closes/sells. Most of the primary chips will be in casino used condition.

edit: quick pic of some handy.. same venue/denom, different chip.

And for some reason, the secondary chips are always better! Maybe it's because the casino has to be boring with their main chips, but they know that these secondary chips will most likely never see play, and they can go totally batshit crazy with them.

Thanks @ 4RunnerRunner & @ BearMetal

So do I understand from this:
1) That the use of the term "secondary" would only apply to actual casino once-owner chips? Store bought chips bought brand new wouldn't ever use the term secondary?
2) Do secondary's always change up something vs. their primary sisters...i.e.: color/tint, strip design, etc. as 4RunnerRunner's pictures above show? Or could sometimes they be identical, except for the use, overuse, unused condition aspect?
3) Is there someplace that identifies which chip is the casinos primary vs. secondary, or do you just have to be familiar enough with that casinos chips-in-play to know the difference. In other words, if I never knew what chip Horseshoe or Jack Casinos used on their floor, and I only saw the picture 4RunnerRunner posted above, how would I know the design of the left was Primary and those on the right were Secondary?

Casino secondary chips are almost never put into play (which is why they are likely to be in mint uncirculated condition), only if the primary set is ever "compromised" (theft, counterfeiting, etc.). They are made to look uniquely different from primaries, and may even have different security features.

Sometimes custom home game chips are designed with secondaries, and the host will substitute whatever they want to play with at the time.

That's correct, store-bought chips would never refer to their chips as secondary. However, a few members here have actually created a secondary custom set to complement their primary set just for fun. So they'll substitute them out once in a while just to change things up. It's a pretty funny idea, but still one that's not very common.

Typically, I don't think there's a way to tell which chips are primary and which are secondary purely from pictures.
