As the title says, just wondering if anyone has tried.

I’ll be in Johannesburg in April for my honeymoon and I had a look at montecasino and noticed the small chips are as low as 1,5 and 25 rand, which is about $0.10, $0.50 and $2.50 aud per chip. I could get a very cheap cash set of chips with such low values.

Not the nicest chips ever, but seems like a cool idea, but I’m concerned it might be tough to get enough out of the casino and then the airport.

Anyone tried this in SA before?

I wouldn’t try it. Those chips are worth more than ten cents apiece and probably more than 50 cents apiece, so whether or not they have any specifics c rules about it, clearly they wouldn’t want you doing it. So you’d essentially be stealing. Which is a minor risk in sonewhere like America where constitutional rights are generally respected, but as a stranger in a strange land? No thanks. There could be real consequences.

That was my concern, but I’ve just found out a friend of mine that moved here from South Africa, will be heading back in March. I had no idea, but he goes to the same casino regularly when he goes back for family visits.
He is happy to test the waters and try to get some out for me. I’ll see how that goes and maybe get them over time. Will see what i can do regarding samples.

I'd give it a go. Take your time. Don't just go buy a few racks at the cage and dump them in a duffle bag. Play some table games and pocket the chips after a few hands.
It's South Africa. Not Namibia in some warlords palace. You aren't going to have your hands removed for stealing.

You may want to post in the you-know-you-are-a-chip-a-holic-when.. thread ;)
Haha, it’s not as bad as it looks. My partner picked the hotel which is based at the casino complex because it’s well known and pretty safe place to stay.

I’m innocent haha

wtf, lol. I had friends like you in high school.

I only harvest from Nigerian casinos, from princes who ask me to donate to them via email. Still waiting for my end of the trade to come through, chips should be coming any day now.

Think my concerns have come across as purely security lol. not bothered about taking a bunch out, since I walk out of my local with chips all the time.

That being said I’m talking about trying to get an entire set of these things out, which might look weird.

The other point to my question, which I wasn’t clear on was how difficult it might be. Given the low value on the chips, it may well be possible that they will hard to locate and gamble with, much like quarters in Vegas.

Hmmm, well I’ve never harvested before, so I’d like to have a plan before i go, since I don’t have long at the hotel. I may be able to get quantities from the cage, or I may have to go play some weird games in order to get the specific chips in after.

Easier if someone checks ahead of time.
