We recently inherited a nice collection of late 60's and 70's records. We also got 3 record players (none of which work). Bought a cheapo player, and we're off!! We have like 8 Beatles records, bunch of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, America, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Creedence....etc. Just curious if anyone here is into listening to a nice vintage record from time to time.

I have purchased a few LP's over the years but not really sure why. I have a record player that I think works but it has a nice layer of dust I would hate to disturb on top of it.

My dad has a huge record collection including a shit ton of 45's from when my grandpa had an amusement business and needed them for jukeboxes. I am sure there are some rare and valuable 45's but condition is probably not all that great.

Get used to hearing pops and static. A decent USB player is the Audio-Technica AT-LP120-SB, or so I have been told.

Back in the days of vinyl records, Bang & Olaffson was considered top of the line. I used (and still have) a Dual 1229Q turntable tracking at .5 grams. I still listen to records from time to time. There was a reason that songs on albums were arranged in a specific order then.

I use to have heaps of records, loved them, nothing compares imo. Unfortunately started selling off my collection bit by bit in my younger days and now have none.

This is what I have... :coffee::coffee::coffee:

Sold all my albums and 2 turntables. I had a Mitsubishi linear tracking turntable I used for 25 years, I bought in 1983 for $400.

Our oldest son (17) is into lp's and bought a decent new turntable, and probably has around 12 albums in his growing collection. He is a fan of 90's grunge.

I collect vinyl records. I absolutely love them. The artwork, the feeling of holding them or putting them onto a turntable. I DJ'ed for about a decade, so that's where my love started. I probably have around 5000 records. Half of them are Drum & Bass, about 25% are reggae and the other 25% are classic rock, 90s alternative, celtic rock and punk.

I also own 9 or 10 turntables, I just can't bring myself to get rid of them.

We just discovered that we own a bunch of albums as we were going through some old boxes. I've already shelved the turntable years ago, and have no plan to bring it back out. Trying to figure out if they should be trashed/donated/sold.

I'm still a moderate chipper with 3 big sets..but I lost my shit it with vinyl.
About 6000 records but who is counting :)

I also have 12 SL 12x0's, 6 premium mixers, 8 amps (crown & crest), tube stuff, vintage hifi, ...
This stuff is my real money pit :)

Tubes! But a definite shortage in the unit on the left.

Any old Marantz gear in there?

One the left, a Marantz 8 and Marantz 15... On the right, a Marantz 8b and a Marantz 7C... On the shelfs, a pair of the Marantz One's!

Love these vintage analogue tube sound... :D

I have a small record collection. I especially like listening to 60's and 70's stuff on vinyl. I have used the clearaudio performance turntable the last years and I am quite happy with it.

@Victor, I wasn't sure that was legit at first. That's a nice setup!

Far out. What's the turntable in the middle?

I'd love me a good tube hifi setup like that. Yikes.

As for OP - I have a whole bunch of records. Mostly 70s/80s rock and blues. I've kept them all but sold the turntable. It was a Rega P3 with a Grace tonearm. Nice unit but every now and then I go through phases of "selling things" - I always regret it. I'll buy another one eventually :)

@doakwolf : the turntable in the picture is a customized LP player made by an OEM audio equipment manufacturer for me some ten years ago... LINN's LP12 is an excellent product, of course.
I have other LP players and tonearms in other rooms along with too many LP records, and yes, mostly 70s/80s ;):);)
Well, as the same time, too many tubes and too many chips! ;):);)

I have a friend really into vinyl and I want to buy him 1 or 2 cool records for Christmas. He is mainly into modern psychedelic music from the 60-70s like Hendrix/Beatles/Doors etc. or current psychedelic stuff like TOOL, skinshape and khruangbin.

He isn't a serious collector and really just picks up records here or there for fun.

Anyone want to sell me a couple records?! Hit me up or feel free to recommend me something.

Check out MusicDirect.com they have new high quality pressings that would generally be far better then what you would randomly find used (unless you are into it and know where to look)

They have many 180g remasters that are quite good. I’ve rebought my entire Doors vinyl collection. A lot of the Zeppelin, Who, Jethro Tull remasters are very, very good.

They pretty much have the full catalog.

Great place and excellent customer service as well, I purchased many albums from them.

I'll be the guy to make the plug for looking into local record stores, if you have any. They are typically a great resource, and you'll be able to find anything that you're looking for either new or used. If your friend isn't local, you can look into his local record store and they would probably be glad to hook you up.

The music industry is a fickle one, and supporting the little guy on the distribution chain makes a big difference.

I love local record stores, but they are few and far between now days. I will always stop whenever a pass a local shop - lol.

Unfortunately, they are a dying breed….

My hometown, Richmond, VA - had a great shop back in the day “Plan 9”. I moved to much bigger cities and surprisingly, the availability of niche stores like HiEnd Audio, music stores, hobby shops etc is waaay worse or non existent.

It is definitely a matter of "fighting the good fight", depending on your perspective.

We are lucky enough to have one major record store and several smaller shops, but that's in both the largest metro area in the state AND a college town - so, obviously mileage may vary.

That said, if you DO have a local and haven't checked it out, chances are it's pretty neat. I assume most users on here appreciate the weird curiosities of niche hobbies, and this is one of them. :)

(Vinyl's resurgence has helped a bit - a lot of folks who want physical media seem to dig vinyl; then again, that number is small!)

Back in the day, I was addicted to the out-of-print section of the local shop. I collected all the colored vinyl, 1st pressings, white label promos, etc.
Sold off most of it years ago and the last of it during the last couple of years….to fund….chips! :ROFLMAO:

Vinyl sounds better - pure and simple, hands down. It’s a bit more work, but it’s hands down the purest reproduction.

I’ve been a vinyl junkie for a long time - lol.

Aside from chip collecting, I have about 40 vinyl records. Like chip collecting, sometimes you look for a long time to find what you are looking for.
