Anyone have the Claysmith gaming 500 chip case? (3 Viewers)

Versa seems great but pricey. 2 X $65 = $130 for 1000 chips vs $50 for a birdcage.

I guess if you already own 10 chip racks, then yes, briefcase type is more expensive. Otherwise, include cost of chip racks for the birdcage.

I have found that for well used casino chips, since they dont fit tight in racks, I prefer storing those in the briefcase style case instead of a birdcage.

So I took some rough measurements of my cases tonight, just for the sake of answering the original question:

Older, decent quality case: just shy of 2 inches diameter for each dealer puck slot
Newer, lower quality case: roughly 1.875 inches on the front slot, the rear slot has taken on an oval shape (due to the hinge pushing on the foam I guess) and ranges from 1.75 inches to over 2 inches diameter

I agree with @justsomedude on the quality of the newer case. The old one was fine for carrying around chips at $47 shipped; the new one isn't worth it. When I received the new one, I threw it into a pile of junk in the garage. It had been sitting there for nearly a year until I pulled it out to measure tonight, so I guess I didn't even find it worthwhile for the price of already paid for. I might throw some infrequently used chips into it for storage, but I wouldn't use it to carry anything around the house. A birdcage is much better suited for that, and will likely prove less frustrating.

By the way, I checked my old emails, and it turns out that I bought the cases two years apart from different sellers. The old seller doesn't (and didn't) have them listed any longer (not that it matters who you buy it from, as I suspect most of this kind of stuff is drop shipped anyway).

I have two Claysmith cases, which I assume are the originals - since they are constructed well and have no flaws. A friend purchased two shortly afterwards, and they are a completely different design and have diffferent dimensions - although they are also constructed well. Later cases have been reported to have many problems, as noted elsewhere in this thread.

So if buying a used Claysmith case, I'd say you have a chance (but no guarantee) of getting a good one. Buying new sounds like a bad idea.

FWIW, I routinely transport chips in a 600-chip birdcage with no problems, in the front seat of my truck. With a seat belt attached, of course.

Good info thanks. Seems like a birdcage is the way to go. $47 and comes with 10 racks for 1,000 chips. Best value.

the racks might or might not be the right size... they vary greatly

The racks are Brybelly. I wonder how well they will fit the Milanos.

Just in case you find a good case:
6 racks and 2 decks of cards stacked

That's actually really great for 600 chips. Nice. But given the scary comments, I'm probably going to stay away from these cases.

Here's how you can set it up with those Da Vinci cards, using the existing foam:

Tuck the dealer button vertically between the foam and the outside of the case. Can store two setups on top of each other. I use the 20 chip plastic container for $100 chips when on the go.

Nice set up!

Any news about quality in current ones?
Any chance there might be room for 7 racks?
If none of the above, the Versa 500 Deluxe continues to be the safest bet. It can take 620 chips (520 + 100 in 4 tubes in the card deck space, if you remove the dividers = "chip only" configuration).

I just got a "new" one. Wasn't impressed with the quality and was going to return it as it's not worth $55 I paid (maybe worth $30ish). Luckily the seller shipped me one that was clearly used before so they're sending a second (hopefully new this time) for free.

Per picture and measurements below the case is just a few inches short (either length or width) to fit 7 racks.
