Finger on the trigger for CPC. I have my patterns, though not the colors, picked out. My only real concern is, tastes change. I know mine do. I've seen guys buy a custom set, love, use it, then decide on another custom set. I get the addiction and it's cool, but i'm at the end of a long list of hobbies, moving toward clearing out, so the last thing I need is thousands of chips.

My thought was, what if I get the chips from Dave, but just label them? I really like my Majestics and could just label those, but i don't get the edge spot variety, etc., that I can with CPC.

You can do that, with two caveats:
  • The original chips have to be inlaid
  • You'll need to pop out the original inlays before labeling them
If th chips aren't originally inlaid, or if you label over the original inlay without removing it, you'll have spinners.

This. CPCs don't have a recess to speak of so you can't just order blanks and stick labels in them.

I thought it all depended on the mold, as each mold has a different recess.
You're not technically wrong here - each mold can have a different recess, and some molds do have a slightly deeper recess than others. That being said, I haven't found a CPC mold yet that offers a recess deep enough to allow for straight re-labeling or labels over blanks w/o creating spinners. Most of them are pretty flush w/the rim of the mold, and those that are deeper such as the FDL don't have a recess deep enough to allow for labeling w/o risking spinners.

I thought maybe Hourglass was the best candidate, but don't remember. It will depend on the thickness of the label that you want to use as well. I thought many people used Hogwild labels on ASM chips in the past, but I don't know if spinners were an issue. @Gear probably has tested all of the CPC molds.

Get real inlayed clays, enjoy them for years, then if you want you can eventually remove the inlays & sticker them, although you will by then, of course, realize you need to buy another set, & may "possibly" decide to sell the 1st .....

You can also order CPC blanks and have a recess milled deep enough to take laminated labels..... including custom shaped ones from @Gear. (y)

for sure. Milling a blank is probably cheaper than CPC inlay
That can't be right .... A CPC full inlayed chip is only about 30-32 cents more than a blank, & he would have both a real inlay, & essentially a "ready recess" if ever removed ...
I would have though labels alone would run .30/chip for both, before any milling ......

I meant just the milling cost. Cost of labels is the same whether he applies them to milled chips or removes inlays.

I had understood the OP to mean he would not be buying CPC's & immediately removing inlays & re-labling, but "eventually" might want a new design & was debating blanks + labels,.. if that is the case, the flat 31c/ inlayed chip seems a much better deal than 30c+milling cost per chip ea .. He would design the inlay "instead" of a label ...
In the future, no milling costs, just remove the inlays ...

^That^
and removing the original inlay can be very difficult. It might require milling anyway

And you can't use a shaped label to replace a round inlay..... and shaped inlays will cost a lot more than 31c over the price of blanks, not to mention that you are locked into the few shapes offered by CPC.

Removing CPC/ASM inlays is very easy. I just did 400 of them in a few hours in my down time at work. Waiting for @Gear to get his printer working again so I can get more labels made.
