The other night after dealing a 1/2 cash game that plays like a 5/10 for 12 hrs. There was an outrageous amount of money on the table (over 10k). When the game broke, a few guys hung around itching to keep gambling. One of the remaining players suggested we play a game called Acey Deucy. Dude explained the game and exclaimed it was pure luck, no skill whatsoever. This old boy has got money and is lighter than a June frost. Couple this with the fact that I was flush with tips and wired from redbull I decided to check it out. (Never played before)

His version i have been told is a variant that is very popular with GI's in the Army.

Rules.

Everyone antes $25 and the first player to go gets dealt two face up cards and then passes or bets on whether or not the next card will fall in between the two dealt cards. Initially, the maximum bet is the amount of the ante.
Lets say you bet $25 and you win. You would be considered "out" and there will be no limit on your betting there after. If you win $10 before being out you can only bet the rest that you anted, so $15. Any contributions you make to the pot by getting a losing card does not count against the amount you have to get out. All pay outs are 1:1.

The play goes around clockwise until there are no more cards, at which point the deck is reshuffled and play resumes until the pot is scooped by someone.

If the first card is an Ace, the player has the option to play it high or low, any Ace after for that player will be played high.

If the players third card is one of the two cards initially dealt, then that player pays double. Called posting. (like hitting the goal posts).

I lost a bit and after 30 mins or so, I figured out the math on which spreads were +EV and started keeping track of Aces, Kings, and Deuces. I actually got killed by one of the remaining 2 aces on an A to A spread (best possible) There were still around 40 cards in the deck. Lucky I didnt pot it, I would have lost over $500, I only bet $40 and lost $80 (double for posting)

I came back and ended up a little more than even. Sucks but happy I didnt lose my first time playing.

I went home around 7:30am, I was told the three guys I was playing with played until 11am, one dude got broke for over 2k.

Sick, Sick game and great to be playing it with guys consistently betting less than break even situations.

Want to play again buy wondering what sort of bankroll i would need. The pots can get out of control very fast. I do not think these guys understand how big the $25 antes actually make the game.

Any thoughts?

Love the game though I dont play near the stakes you do. We play it a lot on our dealers choice night. Without a doubt it always creates the biggest pots of the night for us. Its a sick game. I got nailed potting it on a K 3 and hitting of course a K. Ours is played fairly similar to yours.

This game isn't luck, it is both a skill game and one that greatly favors the player with the biggest stomach for variance. I'd say the weaker players are at a massive disadvantage if they are also unwilling to bet big bets on a thin edge.

Also known as "Between the sheets". I've played several times during dealer's choice nights. Fun game! If you can count cards, you're at a huge advantage! On Thursdays, many the guys stick around after they bust from our league tournament, and play cash. This game isn't played any more, cause two seasons ago, five members started a game where they all anted $2 to start ($10 pot). That night the pot grew to over 2K, with the eventual biggest loser owing over $1,300. Like I said, you can't get anyone to play it on Thursdays anymore.

If you aren't willing to pot here you should never play this game.

We only play it on circus game nights (wilds abound) where drinks are flowing and fun is the only goal... So we play it as a spread game. Normally $.25 to $5 or $10 max bets.

I have played it many, many times (although for lower stakes and sometimes with a double deck). I agree with all of the above comments. I like to think I play the game tight but aggressive, lol.

We used to play a simpler version in Vietnam. None of this aces low garbage -- the name of the game is "Acey-Deucey", after all.

We played without betting -- just play or pass. If you hit between your two cards, you scooped the pot; otherwise, you matched the pot.

Ante was a quarter. We once had an incredible run and ended up with a $1000+ pot, at which point we chopped and went back to poker. Insane...

This is the version I played in high school and college a few times. We never built anything close to a $1000 pot, but it can escalate quickly.

Yes A always high. If you had two matching cards (AA, 88, 22 etc.) you could pick if the next card was going to be higher or lower, hit the post pay double.

Played it many, many times - with only a nominal ante though ($.25 to $1 depending on how gambly players are feeling) but if the pot is scooped on the first run-through of the deck, everyone re-antes, and an additional re-ante every time the deck is reshuffled, and none of that "out" stuff - bet what you want, when you want.

Knowing the math is important but incredibly simple. The biggest advantage you can have is a much larger bankroll than the other players. We once had a $700 pot built in a $.25 ante game - nobody at the table could come close to covering that. It just had to be knocked down $50 at a time, took like 3 hours all told.

$25 ante is sick - I wouldn't even post in that game without at least $10k in my pocket. And if I had to have $10k in my pocket, I wouldn't be there...

Crazy game for sure. We just play with .25 cent antes and as many others have said, the pot still gets large even at those stakes. We try not to get it too big to where people have to write IOU's. The main goal is to have fun and we try to make sure nobody goes home too sour.

I agree, but the stakes were too high for what we had in front of us for me to do this. Besides after being in the box for 12 hours, I wasn't going to lose it all in one hand of some game I just learned. If I was there playing poker that night and was up I would certainly have potted it.

Yeah these guys are nuts. They are deranged gamblers. The guy that introduced the game is an oilfield manager type. Lost 30k last month on poker alone....
The 1/2 I deal will play like a 5/10 when he is there. Always a few pots over 2k, and countless over a grand.

It did not take me long to figure out the stakes they wanted to play in Acey Deucy were way too high. They really do not understand or care how much the pots can get out of control.

But I obliged them for awhile to keep face. I made around $700 in tips that night off them by dealing and wanted to repeat nights like that.

I just played insanely tight while the pot was huge. I would bet $5 on 8 card spreads, $10 on 9-card spreads, $15 on 10-card spreads, etc.

I would pot it only when i could keep track of the cards well enough with a good spread or the pot was small enough not to hurt my stack too much.

(Our chip stacks were huge and it was 7am. Not mine (around $600) I initially kept track of AK2 with chips, by the time I left I was setting up 5 stacks of 4 chips behind my chip stack. Each were representing a card. AKQ32 and I would pull one off and play with them to keep them from seeing.)

Pretty sure this was cheating but I could give a shit. We were all a mess after 12hrs of poker. Our chip stacks were messy anyways. Also, I think they knew what I was doing but thought I was such a sucker they didnt care. I would call out King for the last card and be wrong on purpose. lol

I have been practicing at home to do this mentally, keeping the number 444 in my head for AK2 and adjusting it as the cards go by. But I am not sure I will play with them again. I dont see having 10-20k that i am willing to put on the line for this crazy game anytime soon
