At the risk of outing myself, I'm going to try to narrow down how my first real set will look. I'm an oceanographer who's worked in some cool places and I want my eventual table and chips to reflect the adventures now that I'm stuck at a computer analyzing the data. This thread will be following my ideas about how best to do this.

I took two deployments down to Palmer Station, Antarctica, an incredible place with some great people, to study how the ocean's water column around the continent is changing. Stuck on the ice, we played a lot of cards! I ran small poker games with the little table and chips we had, but I've been thinking about honoring those games with a proper set; if I ever win the lottery I'd happily send an extra set down South to my people. Below are some of my inspirations.

This was our little card table! Station managers realized that morale is very important when sticking 20 people in a few buildings for 6 months.

Me and Cheech had different strategies for keeping our poker faces... That little bottle in front of him wasn't water, we affectionately called it Krunk Juice, no idea what it was but you could light the fumes.

Trip down memory lane feels good! Hopefully someday in the future I can represent Palmer's amazing community with a custom set.
Unsure of the name yet; Palmer Station Poker Club, Palmer Cardroom, Antarctic Cardroom, Southern Ocean, Iceberg Lounge. Gonna roll a few around on my tongue. Please comment below if you can think of a better play on words or if one of them jumps out at you as a good name. NO PENGUINS ALLOWED. I hate those smelly entitled creatures, no joke, they're miserable animals lol.

My wife loves the (40) shades of blue so it will have atleast one beautifully light blue chip and a white one, but the rest can be more standard, I can't make them all blue sadly. Definitely has to include micro stakes. I saw some beautiful samples from BRproPoker and was blown away by the writing on the edges and the feel, I really don't think I'll have the scratch for a CPC set anytime soon so ceramics are most likely what I'll be aiming for.

What an incredible concep!

I think ceramics are an excellent way to go for this kind of theme, as you can maximize the face of the chips with artwork. I'll be interested to see how this idea develops!

Thanks, homie! You're right, I didn't think about maximizing the face, I have to think more about what the art should be.

We are headed down there on Dec 21-Jan 4 if you want me to take them a set.
Hell, if you can get us into Palmer station while we are there I’ll gift them a tournament or cash set.
Woah, what cruise? I used to lecture to a few of those when they'd visit. Does your cruise offer 'excursions' or anything? Sometimes when they would use the small zodiacs in the area they were able to come ashore for a bit, get their passports stamped.

Yeah, “The Ice” is how I’ve heard people rever to it, also. Seems like a win.

Excited to see how these develop. Take your time, make it yours.
Yeah its our little slice of heaven; I even mentioned it in OP. Now that you both mention The Ice, thats fire.

Thank you for the advice, Ive been taught buy once cry once so Ive been hesitant to buy any big set until Im ready. Got a 1000 piece crown & dice which are low end but my friends absolutely love them because they arent the usual garage chips we've used.

Above: new set
Below: dice chip set Ive used for 15 years lol

I'll post pics of my ride down tomorrow, crossing the Drake passage was always memorable speaking of boats!

Copying Boulder Station or one of the other Station casinos on one side and having a “The Ice” theme on the other would be pretty badass.

Oceanside Expeditions. We stay the night on land one night, some kayaking, some snowshoeing. Christmas and New Years this year.

HA! I learned how to multi quote on the computer! Suck it, Gates.
Few shots of our ride down. Thing rides like hell; it's a bigger ship but has a pretty intense swings. People have been thrown out of bed on bad crossings. We've had many people say they want to experience bad seas at least once, and a lot of us just get the thousand yard stare.
This also shows the scope of these icebergs, easily size of a 3 or 4 story building.

Holy shit! What? Like a human swimmer? That happens!?!?!?
100%. They don't go out of their way to attack humans but are curious, playful, and deadly. The person was snorkeling and, just like they do to penguins, they dragged her (believe it was a woman) under. Watching them toy with penguins was brutal, even if I do hate the penguins. The leps drag them down then release them to see if they'll get to the surface.

Heartbreaking. Rothera is out British sister station, we've had research cruises stop over there.

Some kind of Easter egg for “The Thing” movies
These are damn good ideas, we watch that movie at the start of every winter. Hmmm! This is why I ask you geniuses.

Copy. If you're along the Western Antarctic Peninsula you might be close to us but no luck on departing without lots of paperwork. I have never in my LIFE felt cooler than I did sidling up to this cruise ship in my little research vessel. They might as well have been chanting, "MAXIMUS! MAXIMUS!"

Okay. Now I've gotta figure out how to start this process. Is there a set size I should be making my artwork? Just a circle for now? Thank you all for your words, this is very helpful.

For my own thoughts:
Mostly micro stakes with friends and family, but want a healthy # of 1s 5s and 20s to run occasional larger games.
OR
Should I make this a tournament set? Very good excuse to make MOAR denominations that will all get seen! Hmmmmmm. That would also enable me to have this forever and buy tons...

Considered colors, def can be changed and already have too many. Big thing that might offend people: no green. Very little green was seen down there other than small amounts of moss or algae along the shore. Stark contrast to grass and trees, but that should resonate.
1 -stark white (untouched glacier)
2 - navy blue (deep water)
3 - Light blue with bright orange (dense ice + research vessel)
4 - Orangeish with yellow (ship)
5 - Grey with red spots (Leopard Seal)
6 - Black with white (Thawing islands, rock and ice)

Again? Are you ever not on some awesome cruise?

As a former Frigate sailor who's been through a hurricane or two, it's an epic experience. Watching the swells swallow the bow of the ship and slam into the bridge windows was incredible. We had seas so violent we had filing cabinets break their floor welds and go flying across the shop. Thankfully our racks had seat belts so we didn't get launched from bed!

Your photos are incredible, please post more and I look forward to seeing your set develop.

Yes! We'd stuff towels into the outer edge of our bunks, try to keep us snug; seat belts would have been smarter. There is no wonder people worshipped the ocean and still do, the might of it.

I appreciate your kind words, they make me feel good. I will post some more. I'm not a designer but looking forward to working with those that are. The pictures were too easy, very tough to miss when shooting down there. I'll be deleting these after some time. I'm not worried about people on this forum enjoying them but friends have had their photos scooped onto google and sold for profit from people scanning for Antarctic photos.

Pushed the sea ice out and took a quick dip. You might think this is exaggerated but this is the closest I've been to dying. Seconds after this photo was taken, probably within 20-30 seconds, a leopard seal pokes it's head out of the hole we'd made. They don't like bumping their noses on the sea ice so it was taking advantage of the area we'd cleared. Could've been pulled under. I get chills looking at this photo, and it's not because of the 27F water.

The station ordered and received too many sample test tanks and too much piping. It's a shame but we made sure that it didn't go to waste and created a hottub, lemons and lemonade and all that.

It was about this light most times during peak of summer, this could've been midnight.
