Recently sold off some chips, including singles. Apparently the postman at the post office has been watching the douchebags out in California rummaging through packages off trains and thought that was a good idea..."because he's hungry" I suppose. Had one package with a Thunderbird chip show up with the package ripped open and the chip gone. Package I REALLY care about was 3 x Nevada Hotel $100's. Never showed up to the buyer. So I assume postman just stole them and trashed the envelope. I have only ever seen just over a barrel of these together, so not really a chip in quantity. So keep your eyes open on eBay. I live in Houston, so likely that's where the seller would be from. I have made the buyers whole, but the NL's are fucking HARD to come by, so 3 going to some assclown just bothers me. Hoping if you see one listed you'll reply here so I can at least try to get them back for the buyer.

Have you called the USPS?
I received an empty envelope that had been cut open and retaped. They initially told me there was nothing they could do, since it was uninsured. I kept calling, somehow got it escalated, and got a call the next day that the chips were “found” at the local PO.

I have. The empty envelope was the Thunderbird. When buyer of the Nevada Hotels said they never arrived, I assumed they, too, were tampered with. Guess I can try again. But no proof I even sent anything.

That is pretty serious for the mailman to steal. It certainly can happen, but it's rare. I would contact the post office and question them about it, probably nothing that can be done, but at the very least, open up the bosses eye on the possible mailman that could be stealing. But it might not be the mailman, because anything can happen.

Contact the Post Master and file a report.
Do you have a tracking number? ^ Either way, I'd second this. I once had to do this for a package that was marked as "delivered" but wasn't there. (it was delivered to my office mailroom which is in a secure building, so theft was unlikely). I had to drive to two different post offices, because the one closest wasn't the same one where the post master's office was located, but after I did, and after I filed a report -- a few days later, the missing package was delivered.

In the story I linked, that was 100% what happened. But what bothered me most was the initial response - since it was uninsured, there was nothing they could do.
The postal employees can tell from the rate paid whether something is insured or not. And if they know uninsured packages that are missing or damaged won’t be investigated, they kind of have a license to steal.

Actually -- just thinking about it further. I was the recipient of this package and I was the one who filed a report. I guess it might be good for both you (the sender) and the recipient to file a report with the Post Master in your respective cities, just in case the package is still within the USPS system somewhere -- it could be on either end.

sorry to hear these didnt make their intended destination? Did these not have any tracking? Were they sent in a regular standard envelope? Is there no evidence of you paying for any postage?
This is what I was thinking. I only ship first class or flat rate. Always with tracking. Only exception would be cut cards or 1-2 singles of no particular value. Certainly nothing that is irreplaceable.

I truly am sorry for your loss, but you are jumping to a conclusion that the mailman stole it. As I said, it's possible, but that is not the only scenario. Packages get damaged, ripped open, contents fall out. I've had it happen to me, and sure, the thought that someone stole it was in my head, but that is not always the case, and I would not proceed on the assumption that it was stolen. I work inside the post office and have seen packages ripped open on accident. I have found contents that had fallen out of a package, but no way to find the damaged package to place them back into. Shit happens. And even insured packages, that are investigated , can be stolen. It's not that much of a deterrent to someone that wants to steal. I've also had an eBay experience , where I believe the shipper never sent the chip to me, just an envelope with a hole cut in the side, because I got it so cheap, so they could keep the chip and sell higher later, (but that was a gut feeling) There are any number of scenarios that can happen under the sun.

I’d report it stolen ASAP. Get any pictures of it you can and then send it to the police/post office. FWIW I would say it is unlikely that it was stolen by the postman. I’ve had a couple packages mysteriously disappear or just arrive opened with the contents missing. I’ve always figured they get snagged at the hubs because of the volume of packages moving through. Either way really sorry to hear you got chips stolen and I hope you are able to find them.

As I said, they were recovered.
I received an empty padded manilla envelope that had been clearly and cleanly sliced across the top, then neatly re-taped.
When my claim got escalated, they found the chips at the local PO and told me that they must have fallen out as they went through one of the sorting machines.
Do you think that’s a credible explanation?

Sounds fishy, but there could be equipment that can make a clean slice, then someone finds it and neatly tapes it, but it does sound fishy. I will say there are a lot more postal employees that handle packages throughout the system, not just the letter carrier that delivers the package to your door. Glad you got them back, hope @Brandon does also.

I shipped a single chip in a small padded envelope and was surprised at the price. I talked to the postal worker (small local PO) about just using a regular stamped envelope. He strongly suggested not to saying they have buckets of crap that get torn out of envelopes. The high speed processing/sorting machines they use can easily rip an envelope that is irregular or over a certain thickness.

He advised to always ship as a “parcel” because they are handled differently with different machines to accommodate irregular packages, etc.

At least that what he told me.

Seen this (torn open envelope where the chip shot out of) a few times. There's a non-machinable stamp for an extra .20-.25 that supposedly tosses it into another process that won't go through the rollers of death. Sometimes when the PO feels an envelope its to make sure you pay the first class package rate (technically only documents, photos, and the like are for first class mail rates) and sometimes its to help you out so your envelope doesn't get split open and your item gets lost/broken.

Sometimes packages do open throughout the delivery process, and if it seems like the content is missing or any of the content is missing, it is known as a “fall out package” I will ask the UPS clerk where I work what they do with their fall out packages. I know the USPS has different polices they follow, but still similar I would assume. And there is always potential theft too. We had some bad Apple theft last year inside the building… sucks but it’s everywhere. I hope you can recover the chips I had a whole entire MFR package vanish in thin air for @mathewsarcher83 a few years back and it never turned up. I believe it made it to the destination building but never had an out for delivery scan if I can remember correctly.
