So I recently created a new checking account specifically for PayPal, and I tried to link it to my account today. It was ridiculous exercise in frustration and THREE different browsers.

Chrome: Attempt failed after looking up my credit union with a helpful "Something Went Wrong" page. Googled a bit, cleared cookies, no help so I gave up.

Internet Explorer: This time I got to the page to link my account. I had a long, hearty laugh when PayPal/Yodlee asked me for the username and password of my online banking account, then chose the manual (EFT) option. I provided my routing and account numbers, and got yet another specific and helpful message: "Sorry, but we need more information from you."

Finally, I tried with Edge and it worked as expected.

Seriously, why the hell are we still using PayPal? I happily use Google Pay and Venmo, but it seems as if PP is intentionally making it as hard as possible to use their service while charging ridiculous fees and imposing unfriendly terms of service.

I wouldn't even know where to start with cyber currency tbh.

Yeah it takes some time to understand but the functionality and low transaction cost is outstanding. You can send any amount of money to anywhere in the world at almost no cost,

Doesn’t bitcoin’s value change often? That would make it unstable as a form of currency in my eyes.

Yes the price is volatile. It is useful for sending/receiving funds but not great for holding unless you don't mind massive fluctuations. Some exchanges allow you to convert between USD/CAD/BTC so you can keep funds in your local currency and then only buy bitcoin when you want to send money. It sounds complicated but its pretty simple once an account is setup.

I don’t know... either way, Paypal doesn’t have any fees as long as you go from your checking account and use Friends and Family, so I see no real reason to switch, even if it is a bit annoying at times.

Paypal is atrocious when it comes to currency conversion. They offer very poor conversion rates and skim off of every currency conversion. You also pay $5.00 fee for international payments.

I don't even want to add up what I have given them over the last couple years by using their currency conversion.

And to say that they used to use a % based fee...now a flat fee (pay same on 2K vs $20)
Before the flat rate I often pay $20 -$50 in fees.

Their currency conversion is borderline theft

Well, let me tell you about International shipping & customs (import tax + VAT (21% on value +shipping cost, so add about $220 on every 1K)

So a $1000 set I buy here will cost me about $1500 to get home

So essentially, your chip rental/lease costs in Europe are significantly higer than those in the US (with most people in Canada somewhere in-between). Unless the transactions are within the EU... or does that even make a difference?

Sounds like maybe time for a revolution, if the individual governments are treating citizens unfairly in terms of taxes. :)

I just tried to get a buyer pay me on PP and the usd to cad conversion was pathetic. $458 usd converted to $585 cad.... when in reality it’s $610 cad!!!!

I may just refund him and get him to trans via banks.

PP sucks another app should be used now. Their time is gone. I have no other option to propose for now but for sure will have a look. FYI it was possible in the past to pay directly in USD via credit card and the credit card/bank would convert to CAD. Now the option is gone and we are forced to pay with the PP conversion rate (basically they convert the USD to CAD and charge to the credit card, instead of just charging the credit card in USD)

Another issue I had with PP after getting my new checking account squared away:

Several months ago, PP sent me two paper checks for withdrawals (because I couldn't do EFT at the time). The checks got misplaced and had expired by the time I found them, so in early August I requested that both checks be stopped and the balance returned to my account.

The first one was about $50 and went through smoothly. The second was about $200, and the stop check is still outstanding. Once a week for the past four weeks, I've sent an update request, CS tells me it's processing and I should get an email in 72 hours, no email ever arrives.

Anybody know if it's possible to escalate this or am I just doomed to keep repeating this cycle?

One time I was traveling in the States and needed to use my PayPal account. I was using my phone to log in my account but because my IP was in the US it wouldn't process the payment. I phoned them, gave them all my security info and they still wouldn't process it unless I was back home and they could call my home number to verify it was me. I gave up in frustration. Then I remembered I had their app installed on my phone. I went in there and put the payment through no problem. WTF PayPal?

Lol at people that want an institution to move and handle money transactions around the world securely with the click of a couple of buttons without paying fees.

Once someone else provides the same level & ease of service & does it securely on a global scale then people will adopt to it. Until then I'm good with PP & Google Pay for US only stuff.

It is not gone, it is just hidden and you have to change it each and every time (because they really don't want you to). First, you have to change the currency under "You transfer" to USD. Then you need to find the small print at the bottom that gives you the option to change who does currency conversion:

I’ve had the opposite experience. Linking two new bank accounts and seven new CC in the past year has been seamless.
